PURPOSE: Adjuvant sunitinib prolonged disease-free survival (DFS) (hazard ratio [HR] 0.76) in patients with locoregional high-risk renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in the S-TRAC trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00375674). The 16-gene Recurrence Score (RS) assay was previously developed and validated to estimate risk for disease recurrence in patients with RCC post-nephrectomy. This analysis further validated the prognostic value of RS assay in patients from S-TRAC and explored association of RS results with prediction of sunitinib benefit...

BACKGROUND: Rural Appalachian populations have poorer health and fewer positive health-related behaviors compared to other United States populations. Appalachians are the most sedentary U.S. population and teens are particularly sedentary. Obesity prevention through improving physical activity is a top priority in Rural Healthy People 2020. Obesity prevalence among Appalachian teens exceeds the national rates of 13.9% and has consistently been greater than 26%. Organized sports has not been effective at improving daily physical activity or health outcomes for Appalachian teens...

We report on the inelastic response of the homologous compounds (PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m for m = 1, 2 and 3 followed in a broad temperature range (50-500 K) using high-resolution powder inelastic neutron scattering experiments. These results are complemented by low-temperature measurements of the specific heat (2-300 K). The evolution of the anisotropic crystal structure of these compounds with varying m, built from alternate Pb-Se and mBi-Se layers, only weakly influences the generalized phonon density of states...

BACKGROUND: Technical advances in radiotherapy delivery have simultaneously enabled dose escalation and enhanced bladder and rectal sparing. However, the optimal radiation fractionation regimen for localized prostate cancer is unclear. Laboratory and clinical evidence suggest that hypofractionation may improve the therapeutic ratio of radiotherapy. We report our institutional outcomes using moderately hypofractionated, intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), and an endorectal balloon, with emphasis on long-term biochemical control and treatment-related adverse events in patients with localized prostate cancer...

Thyroid receptors play an important role in postnatal brain development. Zearalenone (ZEN), a major mycotoxin of Fusarium fungi, is well known to cause serious health problems in animals and humans through various mechanisms, including the physiological pathways of thyroid hormone (TH). In the present study, we aimed to investigate the expression of thyroid receptors α (TRα) and β (TRβ) in primary cerebellar neurons in the presence or absence of glia and following ZEN treatment, using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot...

BACKGROUND: Based on current AJCC-7 guidelines for staging cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), patients with T2 tumor staging represent a prognostically heterogeneous group. The new AJCC-8 guidelines seek to provide improved stratification by inclusion of independent risk factors in the T3 category. These features may be identified in tissue stages during Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS). Thus, low-risk cSCC may be upstaged after MMS, impacting prognosis, additional evaluation, and adjuvant nonsurgical treatment...

BACKGROUND: Liver Transplantation (LT) is a high-risk surgery associated with significant hemodynamic changes requiring advanced hemodynamic monitoring. Pulmonary Artery Catheter (PAC) is still considered as a gold-standard for cardiac index (CI) measurement during LT despite association with an increased risk of complications. Noninvasive impedance cardiography (ICG) could be an interesting alternative tool for CI monitoring. The aim of this study was to compare the precision and trending ability of ICG versus PAC methods during LT...

BACKGROUND: Preoperative nutritional status as evidenced by serum albumin measurement is associated with cancer prognosis but the clinical significance of this for patients with gastric cancer (GC) is unclear. Therefore, we evaluated an association between preoperative serum albumin and GC patient survival in the Fujian area which has a higher incidence for GC in China. METHODS: GC patients (n = 309) who underwent surgical treatment at Fuzhou General Hospital between 2010 and 2013 were retrospectively assessed using a Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test, as well as univariate and multivariate Cox model analyses, to confirm a correlation between patient survival and preoperative serum albumin...

This study explores the development of mismatch responses (MMRs) to Mandarin lexical tone changes in infants at 12, 18, and 24 months of age using the multi-deviant oddball paradigm with the low dipping Tone 3 (T3) as the standard, the high level Tone 1 (T1) as the large, and the high rising Tone 2 (T2) as the small deviant. The results show that the large acoustic change between T1/T3 elicited mismatch negativity (MMN) in all three age groups. The small acoustic change between T2/T3 elicited a positive mismatch response (P-MMR) at 12 and 18 months of age, but no MMR was found to the T2/T3 change at 24 months...

The data on oncologic outcomes in young women with breast cancer (BC) are dated as it relates to recurrences and mortality. Our goal was to assess these outcomes in a modern series of young women with BC. A retrospective chart review identified women ≤40 years old with stage I-III BC diagnosed from 2006 to 2013 at our institution. Demographics, tumor biology, type of operation, recurrence, and survival were analyzed. Overall, 322 women were identified. Most had ER+(70%) infiltrating ductal tumors (88%) with low stage (42% T1; 41% T2; 56% N0)...
