INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency anemia is the most common worldwide nutritional deficiency contributing to childhood morbidity and mortality. According to the official health policy in Israel, providing iron for all babies from the age of 4 months to the age of one year old is recommended. This policy also recommends providing iron supplementation for an additional 6 months for toddlers (who are one year old) with anemia (hemoglobin<11mg/dl). Despite this policy, there is still a high rate of anemia in the Negev's two year old children, especially in the Bedouin population...

BACKGROUND: Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is used for the identification of potential risks in health care processes. We used a specific FMEA - based form for direct referral for colonoscopy and assessed it for procedurerelated perforations. METHODS: Ten experts in endoscopy evaluated and computed the entire referral process, modes of preparation for the endoscopic procedure, the endoscopic procedure itself and the discharge process. We used FMEA assessing for likelihood of occurrence, detection and severity and calculated the risk profile number (RPN) for each of the above points...

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain is a significant public health issue. Both its direct and indirect cost represents tens of billions of US dollars. Although chronic low back pain can be the result of many factors, the predominant cause is disc degeneration. Recent studies have shown genetic involvement in up to 74% of cases. This study aimed to evaluate genetic risk factors of disc degeneration by performing a systematic analysis of association studies. The objective is to provide a guide for practice by assessing the clinical relevance of current information...

Particulate-bound poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of great concern due to their mutagenicity and carcinogenicity effect on human health. In this context, identification, quantification and inhalation cancer risk (ICR) assessment due to PM10- and PM2.5-bound PAHs has been carried out at six monitoring stations in a critically polluted Jharia coalfield/Dhanbad City. Identification of pollution sources at study area has been performed by using PCA statistical methods. Air quality index (AQI) and air quality health index (AQHI) were calculated based on the concentration levels of PM10...

Crotonaldehyde is an ubiquitous hazardous pollutant in the environment which can be produced naturally, artificially and endogenously. Acute exposure of crotonaldehyde was reported to induce severe lung injury in humans and experimental animals. However, the exact toxicity mechanisms of crotonaldehyde in organisms have not been fully explored. In the present study, we explored the role autophagy played in the cytotoxicity induced by crotonaldehyde in human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B), and the pathways that mediated autophagy, including the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway, the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways, were examined and validated...

Gluten describes a complex mixture of proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and oats that pose a health risk to people affected by conditions such as coeliac disease and non-coeliac gluten sensitivity. Complete digestion of gluten proteins is of critical importance during quantitative analysis. To this end, chymotrypsin was investigated for its ability to efficiently and reproducibly digest specific classes of gluten in barley. Using proteomics a chymotryptic peptide marker panel was elucidated and subjected to relative quantification using LC-MRM-MS...

Oxidative stress (OS) and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) as risk markers for environmental stress are widely used to predict changes in the health and fitness of many animals exposed to pollutants. However, from the perspective of protecting declining amphibians, it remains to be verified which one would be a reliable indicator for amphibians exposed to long-term heavy metal pollution under natural conditions. In this study, the OS and FA of Bufo raddei exposed to natural heavy metal pollution were analyzed to determine which marker is more accurate for indicating heavy metal-induced stress...

BACKGROUND: A combination of assays for the presence of serum anti-Helicobacter pylori IgG antibody (HPA) and serum pepsinogen (PG) concentrations can be used to screen for gastric cancer risk. In Japan, this "ABC method" is considered an effective means of stratifying gastric cancer risk. This study aimed to ascertain its cost-effectiveness for assessing gastric cancer risk. METHODS: A Markov model was constructed to compare the cost-effectiveness of two strategies for gastric cancer-risk screening over a 30-year period: the ABC method, which uses a combination of assessing the presence of HPA and measuring serum PG concentrations and scheduling endoscopies accordingly, and annual endoscopic screening...
