BACKGROUND: This systematic review examines the evidence for preprocedural neuraxial ultrasound as an adjunct to lumbar spinal and epidural anesthesia in adults. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases from inception to June 30, 2014, for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies that reported data answering one or more of the following 3 questions: (1) Does ultrasound accurately identify a given lumbar intervertebral space? (2) Does ultrasound accurately predict the needle insertion depth required to reach the epidural or intrathecal space? (3) Does ultrasound improve the efficacy and safety of spinal or lumbar epidural anesthesia? RESULTS: Thirty-one clinical trials and 1 meta-analysis were included in this review...

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe a reliable ultrasound based index scoring system based on ultraound characteristics to identify benign thyroid nodules and avoid unnecessary fine needle aspiration cytology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for thyroid nodules were evaluated prospectively. A total of 284 patients were evaluated from November 2005 to November 2011. There were 284 nodules...

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to define the criteria for use in differentiating benign and malignant nodules with the help of the receiver operating characteristic analysis and to increase the objective diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 363 patients (307 women, 56 men) with 363 nodules (22 malignant and 341 benign nodules) were included in the study. The presence and absence of each US feature of the evaluated nodule - shape taller than wide, irregular margin, hypoechogenicity, microcalcification, and intranodular vascularity - were scored 1 and 0, respectively...

Amebic hepatic abscess (AHA) is the most frequent extraintestinal complication of amebiasis. Over time, its treatment has gone through some changes and at present is based on amebicides and in some cases, percutaneous drainage. The objective of this work is to present our experience with percutaneous drainage by means of guided ultrasound in patients with AHA. In this work, we include 170 patients admitted to the Gastroenterology Unit of the Hospital General de Zona No. 1, (IMSS) in Mexico City during a period of eight years (1990-1997)...
