INTRODUCTION: Following the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in March 2020, pulmonary function testing (PFT) laboratories underwent a transformation, with a reduction in the number of tests or closure in some cases. The aim of this work was to know the activity of PFT in Spain and the modification of this activity due to the pandemic. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A protocolised survey was carried out to members of the PFT laboratories through the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR)...

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening condition that afflicts neonates. Breastfeeding has demonstrated to play a protective role against it. By administering lipopolysaccharides (LPS) orally in newborn rats (NBR), we have developed an experimental model to induce NEC-like gut damage. Our aim was to assess the macroscopic and microscopic appearance of the gut, to evaluate the presence of NEC and study the role of breast milk (BM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: NBR were divided into 3 groups: Group A (control, n= 10) remained with the mother, group B (LPS, n= 25) was isolated after birth, gavage-fed with special rat formula and oral LPS, then submitted to stress (hypoxia after gavage) and group c (BM, n= 12) was breastfed once after birth, then isolated, and submitted to stress like group B...

INTRODUCTION: In a pathological anatomy service, the workload in medical time is analyzed based on the complexity of the samples received and its distribution among pathologists is assessed, presenting a new computer algorithm that favors an equitable distribution. METHODS: Following the second edition of the Spanish guidelines for the estimation of workload in cytopathology and histopathology (medical time) according to the Spanish Pathology Society-International Academy of Pathology (SEAP-IAP) catalog of samples and procedures, we determined the workload units (UCL) per pathologist and the overall UCL of the service, the average workload of the service (MU factor), the time dedicated by each pathologist to healthcare activity and the optimal number of pathologists according to the workload of the service...

UNLABELLED: Intracellular pH (pHi) dynamics are linked to cell processes including proliferation, migration, and differentiation. The adherens junction (AJ) and signaling protein β-catenin has decreased abundance at high pHi due to increased proteasomal-mediated degradation. However, the effects of low pHi on β-catenin abundance and functions have not been characterized. Here, we show that low pHi stabilizes β-catenin in epithelial cells using population-level and single-cell assays...

Antarctica terrestrial ecosystems are facing the most threats from global climate change, which is altering plant composition greatly. These transformations may cause major reshuffling of soil community composition, including functional traits and diversity, and therefore affect ecosystem processes in Antarctica. We used high-throughput sequencing analysis to investigate soil nematodes under 3 dominant plant functional groups (lichens, mosses, and vascular plants) and bare ground in the Antarctic region. We calculated functional diversity of nematodes based on their diet, life histories, and body mass with kernel density n-dimensional hypervolumes...

For most residents of Europe, war is a new experience in which they find themselves both as witnesses and participants. In this paper the war in Ukraine serves as an illustration and case example. Like any unfamiliar experience, war elicits profound emotional responses which can be so overwhelming that an individual may be unable to fully process them and to create mental representations of the reality of war. When the psyche becomes entrapped in an unprocessed state, without the capacity to derive meaning from it, this results in the "fossilization" of the psyche akin to what McGinley and Segal describes as a totalitarian state of mind...

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Gastric adenocarcinoma is among the high-ranking tumors, with respect to frequency and mortality, worldwide. The inflammatory process and immune system activity are associated with oncologic control. Our aim was to identify whether the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and other variables are prognostic factors for survival in patients with metastatic gastric cancer in a Mexican population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma, hospitalized within the time frame of December 2011 to 2021, were analyzed...

Given the unprecedented events unfolding around the globe over the past four years, psychoanalytic communities near and far have sought to ask and ventured to answer the question: What does psychoanalysis have to offer individuals, and the collective, as a way of seeing and being with the reality of what is? Taking up these questions in such a time as this, feels, perhaps inevitably, unsafe. Sometimes it can feel as if there is a silent and unspoken mandate to ensure safety at all costs when we seek to find a spirit of the depth's response to the spirit of the times...

Tropical species richness is threatened by habitat degradation associated with land-use conversion, yet the consequences for functional diversity remain little understood. Progress has been hindered by difficulties in obtaining comprehensive species-level trait information to characterize entire assemblages and insufficient appreciation that increasing land-cover heterogeneity potentially compensates for species loss. We examined the impacts of tropical deforestation associated with land-use heterogeneity on bird species richness, functional redundancy, functional diversity, and associated components (i...

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, there has been an increase of studies dedicated to cognitive rehabilitation in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS); however, few of these analyze the impact on such variables as cognitive reserve. The study aims to explore the effects of a cognitive rehabilitation program comprising a combination of cognitive and physical exercises, as well as group sessions to improve cognitive performance, emotional state, and cognitive reserve index. METHOD: Fifty patients with MS were subdivided into 2 groups: the control group, which performed aerobic exercise (n=25), and the experimental group (n=25), which participated in the integrated cognitive rehabilitation program (ICRP)...

It is a priority to functionally assess the geriatric population through objective, precise, and simple instruments. The Alusti Test in its two versions, complete (TA) and abbreviated (TAA), is a scale that meets these criteria. OBJECTIVE: To determine the usefulness of the Alusti Test as a predictor of adverse health events: falls, hospitalizations, cognitive deterioration, and mortality in the elderly institutionalized population, with a two-year follow-up...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion/systolic pulmonary artery pressure (TAPSE/SPAP) ratio is a noninvasive surrogate of right ventricular to pulmonary circulation that has prognostic implications in patients with heart failure (HF) or pulmonary hypertension. Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a promising rapid, reagent-free, and low-cost technique considered for clinical translation. It allows to characterize biofluids proteome, lipidome, and metabolome at once.
