Athletes make great efforts to increase their endurance capacity in many ways. Using nutrition supplements for stimulating lipolysis is one such strategy to improve endurance performance. These supplements contain certain ingredients that affect fat metabolism; furthermore, in combination with endurance training, they tend to have additive effects. A large body of scientific evidence shows that nutrition supplements increase fat metabolism; however, the usefulness of lipolytic supplements as ergogenic functional foods remains controversial...

In this study, PEG-derivatized octacosanol copolymer was successfully developed to improve the anti-tumor activity and eliminate toxicity of the commercial formulation of paclitaxel (PTX). MPEG2K-C28, the conjugation of monomethoxy Poly(ethylene glycol) 2000 and octacosanol, was readily soluble in aqueous solution and self-assembled to form micelles with small sizes (< 20 nm) that are efficient in encapsulating PTX with a drug loading of 9.38 ± 0.18% and an encapsulation efficiency of 93.90 ± 2.12%. Meanwhile, octacosanol is very safe for humans and amazingly exhibits antitumor activity through inhibition activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and translocation of the transcription factor (nuclear factor-kappa B, NF-κB) to the nucleus, which may be able to promote synergistic effects with PTX...

Atherosclerosis is characterized by endothelial dysfunction, lipid deposition, fibro-proliferative reactions and inflammation. Octacosanol is a high-molecular-weight primary aliphatic alcohol. As the main component of a cholesterol-lowering drug, octacosanol could inhibit lipids accumulation and cholesterol metabolism. To explore the indication of octacosanol on endothelial protection, we evaluated its effects on the proliferation and migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Cell viability assay using methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium and 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine revealed that 3...

The effect of several analogs of 1-triacontanol (TRIA), differing in C-chain length (16-32), the position of the hydroxyl group and the terminal functional group, were tested alone and in combination with TRIA on the growth of rice (Oryza sativa L.), maize (Zea mays L.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) seedlings. Applied alone, none of the compounds caused an increase in growth; thus, chain length (30 C) and presence and position (terminal) of the hydroxyl group appear to be specific for the growth-promoting activity of TRIA...

Triacontanol (TRIA) increases the dry weight and alters the metabolism of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings within 10 min of application to either the shoots or roots. This activity is prevented if octacosanol (OCTA, C28 primary alcohol) is applied with the TRIA on the roots or shoots. Triacontanol activity is also stopped if the OCTA is applied at least 1 min before the TRIA on the opposite part of the seedling.Triacontanol rapidly elicits a second messenger that moves rapidly throughout the plant resulting in stimulation of growth (dry-weight increase) and water uptake...

After foliar application, compounds that are not absorbed into leaves can be removed from the leaf surface by dipping or rinsing in dilutions of organic solvents in water. However, interactions between solvent mixtures and the epicuticular wax layer have received little attention, and information on potential physical and chemical intactness of the plant surface following application of solvents is limited. In this study, wheat leaves were dipped in organic solvents at different dilutions with water, and the major component of the leaf epicuticular wax layer, 1-octacosanol, was analyzed to assess damage to the wax layer...
