Justin M Johnson, Valerie Fox
BACKGROUND: Wernicke's encephalopathy is a condition whose treatment many consultation-liaison psychiatrists know quite well. Less clear, however, is the treatment of its dementia disorder descendent, the Korsakoff's syndrome (KS). OBJECTIVE: This article seeks to review treatment options and provide recommendations for consultation-liaison psychiatrists treating cognitive impairment in KS. METHODS: In this nonsystematic review, we reviewed PubMed, CINAHL Plus, and Google Scholar for published reports and studies regarding treatment of KS...

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines are the conventional mainstay to manage alcohol withdrawal; however, patients are subsequently at increased risk for poor sleep, cravings, and return to drinking. Research on alternative pharmacologic agents to facilitate safe alcohol withdrawal is scant. Gabapentin is one medication shown in small studies to reduce the need for benzodiazepines in the setting of alcohol withdrawal. The continuation of gabapentin after alcohol withdrawal appears to be safe during early sobriety and may aid in reducing alcohol-related cravings or returning to alcohol consumption...

Psychiatric disorders in the perinatal period can lead to a deterioration in one's judgment and decision-making ability. These disorders may cause sensitive and complex legal and ethical issues relating to psychiatric, obstetric, and neonatal care. Clinicians should ethically respect the autonomy of the individual, but at the same time, they must assess the individual's decision-making process with the use of forensic psychiatric and consultation-liaison psychiatric practice. While the literature related to mental disorders in pregnancy has been increasing, there is limited information regarding the medico-legal and ethical aspects of this topic...

BACKGROUND: Geriatric and psychosomatic medicine follow a biopsychosocial paradigm. Despite this similar "Menschenbild" in general, collaboration between geriatrics and psychosomatics is still rare. OBJECTIVES: This comparative interventional study aims to find possible effects of psychosomatic work in geriatrics on the interaction between patients and nursing staff and contentment of patients with treatment in general. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the period of one year 238 geriatric patients (return rate 22...

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has described the characteristics of Consultation-liaison psychiatry (CLP) services over one or more years. The aim of this paper was to examine the patterns of a large sample of patients receiving CLP service over a 10-year-period (2005–2014) and to determine the possible changes over time of the clinical practice. The sample size of our study, the duration of the observation period and the application of standardized operating procedures for acquiring and coding data, will provide more robust evidence than has been reported by most similar studies published in the last years...

Childhood survivors of central nervous system (CNS) cancers (defined as cancers whose diagnosis or treatment affect the CNS) are at increased risk for educational related difficulties, as are children affected by neurofibromatosis type 1. This study evaluated the effectiveness of and satisfaction with a model of psychoeducation, consultation, and advocacy provided by a School Liaison Program (SLP) for families and schools of children with CNS-involved cancers compared with a control group of parents of children with a diagnosis of neurofibromatosis type 1 who did not receive school-based services...

OBJECTIVE: To analyse routinely collected data from a hospital database of drug health consultation-liaison (CL) assessments. We aimed to investigate changes in psychostimulant-related health service demand in an inner-city hospital to inform the development of locally appropriate models of care. METHODS: We used de-identified drug health CL service data from 2012 to 2015. Psychostimulant-related consultations and admissions were compared with opioid-related consultations and admissions over time, by sex and by ward type (medical units, mental health units or emergency department)...

Since the 1970s, the concept of "consultation/liaison (CL) psychiatry" has pertained to specialized mobile teams which meet inpatients hospitalized in non-psychiatric settings to offer them on-the-spot psychiatric assessment, treatment, and, if needed, adequate referral. Since the birth of CL psychiatry, a long set of theoretical books and articles has aimed at integrating CL psychiatry into the wider scope of psychosomatic medicine. In the year 2000, a circular issued by the Health Ministry defined the organization of "CL addiction services" in France...

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that suicide attempts by self-inflicted gunshot wound (GSW) are underreported and may in turn affect disposition following hospitalization. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and use of services among individuals who do not disclose suicidal intent following a self-inflicted GSW. METHODS: Electronic medical record data from 128 survivors of self-inflicted GSWs at a level 1 trauma center were analyzed to identify factors associated with nondisclosure of a suicide attempt to medical staff...

Introduction Paediatric Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Services (PCLPS) are specialised services treating mental health difficulties co-morbid with medical problems. Methods Standardised clinical data was retrieved from all case notes (N=108) during the study timeframe (Jan-June 2016). Results The majority of children were female 59 (55%) with a mean age of 13. Presentation was typically via the Emergency Department (ED) (85, 79%), and of those, the majority (53, 62%) were 'out of hours' and for Deliberate Self-harm (44, 52%) Almost half of all cases seen (50, 46%) were previously known, and discharged back (84, 78%), to CAMHS...

This chapter explores the role of advanced practice clinicians (APCs) and patient care coordinators in the head and neck cancer setting. APCs, which include physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs), are licensed professional healthcare providers who diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical therapies. Although the training, education, and licensure differ between PAs and NPs, their roles are quite similar in head and neck surgery...
