Female pelvic organ prolapse is a widely prevalent condition and is associated with variable morbidity. It encompasses a number of clinical conditions, including subvesical obstruction, overactive bladder symptoms, sexual dysfunction and urinary und fecal incontinence. The prevalence of pelvic insufficiency is estimated to be between 30 and 50 %. As life expectancy is increasing and the elderly population is growing, there will be an increased incidence of the condition and growing demand for pelvic floor treatment in the future...

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Although colpocleisis is effective in selected women, the low-morbidity obliterative procedure for treating pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and its impact on postoperative quality of life (QOL) have rarely been studied. Our aim was to assess QOL in women after colpocleisis and compare it with that of women after reconstructive vaginal surgery. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included women (aged 35-85 years) with POP who underwent obliterative or reconstructive surgical correction during 2009-2015...

Scientific information on violence can be difficult to compile and understand. It is scattered across websites, databases, technical reports and academic journals, and rarely addresses all types of violence. In response, in October 2017 WHO released the Violence Prevention Information System or Violence Info, an online interactive collection of scientific information about the prevalence, consequences, risk factors and preventability of all forms of interpersonal violence. It covers homicide, child maltreatment, youth violence, intimate partner violence, elder abuse and sexual violence...

INTRODUCTION: Prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse will increase with the aging of the population. Concerning the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, transvaginal route is often preferred for elderly women. However few data are available concerning transvaginal mesh surgery in this population. The aim of this study was to compare efficiency and complications of transvaginal mesh surgery between women aged over 75 and younger women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A monocentric, retrospective study included all women who underwent anterior sacrospinous suspension with mesh for treatment of pelvic organ prolapse...

Despite half a century of research on both sexual violence and elder abuse, the intersection between the two remains largely unexplored. Using theoretical lenses of feminist criminology and critical feminist gerontology, this article explores the intersection between age and sexual violence drawing on interviews with 23 practitioners supporting older survivors (aged 60 and over). They reported physical and emotional effects of sexual violence leading to limited lifestyles, disengagement from social networks, and reliance on pathogenic coping strategies...

The synucleinopathies-Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, multiple system atrophy, and pure autonomic failure-result from distinct patterns of abnormal α-synuclein aggregation throughout the nervous system. Autonomic dysfunction in these disorders results from variable involvement of the central and peripheral autonomic networks. The major pathologic hallmark of Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies is Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites; of multiple system atrophy, oligodendroglial cytoplasmic inclusions; and of pure autonomic failure, peripheral neuronal cytoplasmic inclusions...

Elder abuse, including emotional, physical, sexual, financial, and neglectful mistreatment is widespread in the United States, with as much as 11% of community-residing older adults experiencing some form of abuse in the past year. Little data exist regarding the prevalence of polyvictimization, or experience of multiple forms of abuse, which may exacerbate negative outcomes over that of any one form of victimization in isolation. This study evaluates the prevalence of elder polyvictimization among a nationally representative sample of community-residing U...

Assessing decision-making capacity in older individuals with dementia, now known as major neurocognitive disorder (MND), is a complex and challenging endeavor. There is a dearth of literature that touches on the sensitive and controversial topic of sexuality in institutionalized settings, despite the rapid increase in the global population of older individuals. In this article, we assert that evaluations of sexual expression in institutionalized older individuals with MND is essential, as there are concerns specific to risks and benefits of sexual expression in elderly persons with MND that should be considered...

OBJECTIVE: Complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is a newly proposed diagnosis in the International Classification of Diseases-version 11, which is currently intensively investigated. Childhood trauma is regarded as main source of CPTSD symptoms, even in later life. Induction of DNA methylation changes by childhood trauma may contribute to its long-lasting adverse health consequences. The current study analyzed the correlation of genome-wide DNA methylation profiles with complex posttraumatic sequelae in buccal epithelial cells from 31 elderly former indentured child laborers (Verdingkinder) using the Infinium Illumina 450k Human DNA methylation chip...

In reptiles, the mode of reproduction is typically sexual. However, facultative parthenogenesis occurs in some Squamata, such as Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) and Burmese python (Python bivittatus). Here, we report facultative parthenogenesis in the green anaconda (Eunectes murinus). We found two fully developed female neonates and 17 undeveloped eggs in the oviduct of a female anaconda isolated from other individuals for eight years and two months at Ueno Zoo, Japan. To clarify the zygosity of the neonates, we analyzed 18 microsatellite markers of which 16 were informative...

Superficial penile skin infections may be presented in different clinical situations that vary from simple infection to organ loss and serious morbidity and mortality. Antibiotic treatment and, if necessary, urgent debridement is required. A 46-year-old male patient with the complaints of urethral discharge and pain admitted to our outpatient clinic. He declared that there were midpenil tenderness and erythema 14 days ago which occurred after sexual intercourse. Complete penile skin necrosis with purulent discharge was detected in physical examination...

Violence takes many forms, including intimate partner violence, sexual violence, child abuse and neglect, bullying, suicidal behavior, and elder abuse and neglect. These forms of violence are interconnected and often share the same root causes. They can also co-occur together in families and communities and can happen at the same time or at different stages of life. Often, due to a variety of factors, separate, "siloed" approaches are used to address each form of violence. However, understanding and implementing approaches that prevent and address the overlapping root causes of violence (risk factors) and promote factors that increase the resilience of people and communities (protective factors) can help practitioners more effectively and efficiently use limited resources to prevent multiple forms of violence and save lives...

Investigations of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the glans penis are scarce, especially with regard to its natural history. To elucidate HPV prevalence among Japanese men attending urological clinics, 798 adult participants were recruited consecutively and stratified into groups by age based on 10-year intervals. The overall HPV prevalence among the participants was 24.8%, with 15.5% positive for high-risk HPV and 9.3% infected with other HPVs. The HPV positivity rate was sustained in those over 80 years of age at nearly the same level as those in the younger age groups...
