BACKGROUND: Globally, diabetes affects approximately 500 million people and is predicted to affect up to 700 million people by 2045. In Australia, the ongoing impact of colonization produces inequity in health care delivery and inequality in health care outcomes for First Nations Peoples, with diabetes rates 4 times those of non-Indigenous Australians. Evidence-based clinical practice has been shown to reduce complications of diabetes-related foot disease, including ulceration and amputation, by 50%...

The content of the soluble forms of immune checkpoint components sPD-1, sPD-L1 in blood serum, and sB7-H3, sCD314, sULBP1, sHLA-G in blood plasma of 30 melanoma patients receiving immunotherapy with anti-PD-1 antibodies (nivolumab, pembrolisumab) was measured before and in 4 and 8 weeks after the start of immunotherapy. The control group comprised 70 practically healthy donors. Standard immunoassay kits were used. In melanoma patients, the levels of sPD-L1 and sB7-H3 were significantly higher than in the control group (p<0001), sPD-1 level did not differ from the control, while sCD314 and sHLA-G levels were insignificantly decreased...

Pollution caused by plastics and, in particular, microplastics has become a source of environmental concern for Society. Their ubiquity, with millions of tons of plastic debris spilled in both land and sea, requires efficient technological improvements in the ways residues are collected, handled, characterized and recycled. For reliable decision-making, dependable chemical information is essential to assess both the nature of the plastics found in the environment and their fate. In this work an efficient method to identify the polymeric composition of microplastic fragments is proposed...

Meta-analysts often ask a yes-or-no question: Is there an intervention effect or not? This traditional, all-or-nothing thinking stands in contrast with current best practice in meta-analysis, which calls for a heterogeneity-attuned approach (i.e., focused on the extent to which effects vary across procedures, participant groups, or contexts). This heterogeneity-attuned approach allows researchers to understand where effects are weaker or stronger and reveals mechanisms. The current article builds on a rare opportunity to compare two recent meta-analyses that examined the same literature (growth mindset interventions) but used different methods and reached different conclusions...

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Antipsychotics are first-line drug treatments for schizophrenia. When antipsychotic monotherapy is ineffective, combining two antipsychotic drugs is common although treatment guidelines warn of possible increases in side effects. Risks of metabolic side effects with antipsychotic polypharmacy have not been fully investigated. This study examined associations between antipsychotic polypharmacy and risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, or hyperlipidemia in adults with schizophrenia, and impact of co-prescription of first- and second-generation antipsychotics...

AIMS AND METHOD: Calls for the integration of spirituality into psychiatric practice have raised concerns about boundary violations. We sought to develop a method to capture psychiatrists' attitudes to professional boundaries and spirituality, explore consensus and understand what factors are considered. Case vignettes were developed, tested and refined. Three vignettes were presented to 80 mental health professionals (53% said they were psychiatrists; 39% did not identify their professional status)...

OBJECTIVE: This article explores how the concept of 'recovery' has been much debated and often sits at odds with our notion of rehabilitation. METHOD: This article provides a Lived Experience and post-structural commentary on the ever-changing meaning of recovery and rehabilitation. RESULTS: Building on the contemporary Consumer Movement's use of the term recovery, this article explores how constructions of recovery try to create a boundary which stops people being invalidated based on their experience, or perceived experience, of mental distress...

During immune reconstitution following allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), (re)vaccination of allo-HSCT recipients is recommended. Herein, we propose an update of practical recommendations regarding vaccination of allo-HSCT recipients. These recommendations, based on data from the literature, national and international guidelines and the consensus of the participants when no formally proven data are available, were elaborated during the workshop of practice harmonization organized by the Francophone Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (SFGM-TC) in Lille in September 2022...

The development of electrolytes with a wide temperature range, no dendrite growth and corrosion resistance is essential for the practical application of aqueous zinc metal batteries. Herein, γ-valerolactone is developed as the co-solvent to extend the operating temperature range of the aqueous electrolyte and stabilize the zinc metal anode interface. This weak solvent acts as a strong hydrogen bonding ligand and "diluent" to break the hydrogen bonds between free water molecules, thus enhancing the temperature tolerance and chemical stability of the electrolyte...

AIMS AND METHOD: Smoking and vaping are prohibited on Ireland's Health Service Executive (HSE) campuses. The HSE states that there is no evidence to suggest vaping is less damaging than cigarettes. Recent meta-analyses have shown that e-cigarettes are in fact less dangerous and can help smokers quit. Our study analyses the current smoking policies in place in mental health 'approved centres' in Ireland, what is being done to help smokers quit while in-patients and the level of support among staff for the introduction of e-cigarettes as a harm reduction tool...

Nodular Lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) are rare lymphomas in pediatric patients comprising less than 10 % of all Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). They are for the most part diagnosed at stage I or II and indolent with lymphadenopathy often preceding the diagnosis by many months/years. Survival is excellent. Historically, patients were treated according to classical HL protocols. Due to high toxicity and excellent prognosis, management of NLPHL shifted to de-escalation protocol with good results...

There is practically no information on the state of oxidative stress reactions in newborns with coronavirus infections. At the same time, such studies are extremely important and can contribute to better understanding of the process of reactivity in patients of different ages. DSM-5 changes regarding the typology and diagnostic criteria are highlighted. Overview of co-morbidities, associations, developmental trajectories, and syndromic continuity across lifespan is outlined. Recent insights into aetiology and diagnostic tools are briefly discussed. New medications in the pipeline are also described...

Dental anterior fractures are common injuries, especially in those who practice extreme sports. This report describes a 25-year-old Bolivian patient who attended our private dental clinic in La Paz, Bolivia after experiencing an accident during downhill mountain biking. An intraoral examination revealed a fracture line on the buccal side in the middle third of the coronal portion of the right central maxillary incisor which extended towards the proximal and lingual sides.
