Epidermal inclusion cysts in the periocular region are distinctive pathologies exhibiting varied clinical and radiological features, and they should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions near the orbit. This article discusses the clinical and radiological details, along with the surgical results, of two individual cases of epidermal inclusion cysts, with different localization and without any preceding trauma, surgical history, or eyelid inflammation. In the first case, a substantial spherical structure closely connected to the tarsal plate was identified via excisional biopsy, whereas the second case involved a soft, oval tumor located at the outer right orbital corner, as determined clinically and validated through computed tomography...

Clinical and pathologic characteristics of the invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) presenting as a thick-walled breast cyst are little known. Three female patients were included in this report. A palpable, nontender breast lump was found in all cases. While mammography showed a hyperdense mass, ultrasonography demonstrated a thick-walled cystic mass. Magnetic resonance imaging clearly showed the cystic breast lesions with ring-like or irregular rim enhancement. A grade III IDC was confirmed in all cases. All IDCs but one were estrogen receptor negative, progesterone receptor negative, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative, with merely weak progesterone receptor positivity (5%) in one case...

BACKGROUND: Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder, presenting with pruritis and hypopigmentation of vulvar and anogenital skin. LS presenting as a peri-clitoral mass has not been previously described. CASE: A 5-year-old patient with vulvar pruritis and ultrasound showing a homogenous mass was referred for suspected clitoromegaly with normal labs. Exam demonstrated a prepubertal patient with mobile, soft, peri-clitoral mass and surrounding hypopigmentation consistent with LS...

Cystic structures represent one of the most common findings in dermatopathology. These encompass both cystic tumors and pseudocysts resulting from the accumulation of certain substances, such as mucin. In a two-part series (of which this is the first part), we have reviewed the principal types of cysts and pseudocysts that may be observed in cutaneous biopsies, examining their histopathological features and primary differential diagnoses. This first part encompasses infundibular cysts, eruptive dermoid cysts, pigmented follicular cysts, pilonidal cysts, tricholemmal cysts, milium cysts, hybrid cysts, bronchogenic cysts, as well as steatocystoma, hydrocystoma, and comedones...

BACKGROUND: Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) is a rare autoimmune disease, which need to distinguish from eczema, congenital syphilis, and tinea corporis in newborns. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) could be a helpful noninvasive diagnostic tool, which has been used to evaluate several inflammatory skin conditions. The aim of this study was to describe the RCM characteristics of NLE. METHODS: 9 NLE patients were included in the study, all patients were evaluated clinically with RCM...

OBJECTIVE(S): Despite advancements in imaging techniques and cytological analysis, plunging ranula remains a challenging surgical, radiologic, and pathologic phenomenon. Of the 18 patients we evaluated at our institution, we highlight three cases that illustrate the high rate of misleading imaging and cytological results when assessing plunging ranula. METHODS: Imaging results, biopsy findings, operative techniques, and pathological reports were reviewed from patients who had either a preoperative or postoperative diagnosis of ranula and underwent surgery by a single head and neck surgeon at a tertiary care center...

Schwannoma, also known as neurilemmoma, is a benign neoplasm of Schwann cells of the cranial or peripheral nerve sheath. Scalp involvement has been reported in 25% of patients with extracranial head and neck schwannomas, which can be misdiagnosed clinically as epidermal cyst or lipoma. In this article, we report a 32-year-old male presenting with a slow-growing painful subcutaneous mass on the left occipital scalps without any neurological symptoms. Pathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of schwannoma, and surgical removal resulted in the resolution of pain and lack of recurrence...

BACKGROUND: Many cutaneous lesions are clinically suspected as "cyst"; however, following histopathological examination, are found to be more significant lesions. Here, we examine the frequency and features of malignancies with cutaneous cysts in the clinical differential. METHODS: A retrospective study of surgical pathology specimens at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital from January 2018 to December 2022 was conducted. Cutaneous specimens containing the clinical diagnosis of "cyst" were included...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare type of carcinoma that arises from the salivary glands. When ACC is present on the skin with no other primary site of malignancy in the body, it is termed primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PCACC). The only way to differentiate between ACC and other benign cutaneous masses is through the use of histopathology and immunohistochemistry. This case report describes a 67-year-old Asian female with a history of an epidermal inclusion cyst. She was seen in consultation with general surgery for the removal of a mass on her lower back...

Cutaneous cystic lesions (n = 35) were examined with optical coherence tomography. Cysts were visible as a hyporeflective roundish area with a clear margin; in some cases, the epidermis was thinned. Epidermal cysts, trichilemmal cysts, and hidrocystomas had a linear margin representing the epithelium of the cyst, whereas mucoid pseudocysts showed no linear margin. Trichilemmal and epidermal cysts presented with hyperreflective content that corresponds to keratin. By visualizing the margin and the content of the cyst, it was possible to differentiate between different types of cysts...

Female genital mutilation (FGM) was seen in 30 countries, especially in Africa and also in Asia and the Middle East. According to WHO data, Somalia is where FGM is performed most frequently. Our study aimed to evaluate the recordings of patients with FGM who were diagnosed with a traumatic clitoral cyst. We identified the clitoral cyst cases between February 2015 and August 2020. We collected clinical, surgical, sociodemographic, and histopathological details such as age, marital status, patient resume, age at which FGM was performed, complaints, size of the cyst consultation reasons, FGM procedural long-term complications, sexual function, husband polygamic relationship status, and histological findings...

METHODS: Reports from all ultrasound-guided procedures between 21 May 2014 and 17 March 2022 were queried for keywords including "hand", OR "finger", AND "biopsy". Patient demographics, lesion size and location, biopsy needle gauge and the number of cores obtained were recorded. Epidermal cysts conventionally range in size from 1 to 5 cm, with sizes greater than 5 cm rarely reported. Benign fibrous histiocytoma also known as dermatofibroma is one of the common mesenchymal neoplasms. It commonly develops in young adult with female predominance and predilection for the extremities, particularly lower extremities. Implantation of epidermis in the dermis or subcutaneous tissues may lead to the formation of epidermal inclusion cyst, which is the most common type of epithelial cyst. Development of epidermal inclusion cyst within a benign fibrous histiocytoma is a rare occurrence. This is a unique case of two unrelated lesions...

The aim is to present a unique clinical case of a 62-year-old male with an ossifying fibroma (OF) in the left orbit. He presented with a slow-growing mass with bone consistency which easily shifted with palpation. After removal, it was given the histopathological diagnosis of osteoma. However, the lesion grew back rapidly and it became even larger 4 months later. After a computed tomography scan with a contrast medium, another surgery was performed. The histopathological diagnosis of the recurrent lesion was an epidermal cyst with secondary degenerative changes...
