One of the recent advances in bariatric surgery is the use of magnetic devices. This research paper describes magnetic liver retraction in morbidly obese patients during bariatric surgery. A descriptive, prospective and observational study was carried out, analyzing 100 patients in whom magnetic retraction was used. Mean and SD body mass index was 46.1 ± 5.09 kg/m2 . The magnetic system was successfully used for liver retraction in 95% of cases; in only 5% of cases was its use not possible due to hepatomegaly and severe hepatic steatosis...

INTRODUCTION: Innovation in internet connectivity and the Covid 19 pandemic have caused a dramatic change in the management of patients in the medical field, boosting the use of telemedicine. A comparison of clinical outcomes and satisfaction between conventional face-to-face and telemedicine follow-up in general surgery, an economic evaluation is mandatory. The aim of the present study was to compare the differences in economic costs between these two outpatient approaches in a designed randomized controlled trial (RCT)...

Over the last few decades, significant improvement has been made in both the evaluation and treatment of esophageal achalasia. The Chicago classification, today in version 4.0, is now the standard for diagnosis of achalasia, providing a classification into 3 subtypes with important therapeutic and prognostic implications. Therapy, which was at first mostly limited to pneumatic dilatation, today includes minimally invasive surgery and peroral endoscopic myotomy, allowing for a more tailored approach to patients and better treatment of recurrent symptoms...

BACKGROUND: Scrub nurses play a crucial role in facilitating orthopaedic surgeries, and thus intraoperative scrub nurse turnover may disrupt the workflow of the surgical team and prolong duration of surgery (DOS). The purpose of this study was to quantify the impact of intraoperative scrub nurse turnover on operative time of orthopaedic surgeries lasting less than 3h in duration. METHODS: Prospectively collected databases from two institutions were retrospectively queried to identify all orthopaedic procedures of maximum mean duration of 180min from March 4th, 2018 to August 31st, 2022...

INTRODUCTION: Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGPN) is a rare form of chronic renal inflammation, caused by long-term obstruction of the urinary tract. Pyonephrosis is a severe suppurative complication of acute obstructive pyelonephritis. Although minimally invasive approaches have many advantages, the safe dissection of the kidney may not be always achievable. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed 27 cases diagnosed with either XGPN or pyonephrosis, who underwent laparoscopic total nephrectomy between October 2016 and March 2022 in our department...

BACKGROUND: The reconstruction of surgical defects in high-tension anatomical regions is challenging due to the ischemia and subsequent necrosis associated with tension closure. Research on new flaps capable of closing these defects exerting less tension would be a tremendous advancement in dermatological surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, retrospective study that used 2 new flaps-the bishop and the sigma ones-to repair surgical defects in high-tension regions such as the scalp, lower extremities, and the nasal pyramid...

OBJECTIVE: To organize the experience and international knowledge in the surgical management and staging of colorectal endometriosis, with a management proposal in stages. METHOD: An extensive non-systematic review of the literature was carried to organize the disease in stages (limited, intermediate and advanced) according to a scoring system, which considers the characteristics of the endometrioma, the personal history and surgical findings. We tested the proposed staging in a retrospective group of patients...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to show for the first time how aflibercept affects endometriosis lesions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Surgically induced endometriosis in Wistar albino female rats. Rats with endometriosis were randomly divided into three groups: control (Co), aflibercept (Af), and leuprolide acetate (Le). Then, Af, aflibercept, and Le received leuprolide acetate. The control group was not treated. The weights and changes in intra-abdominal adhesions of the rats before and after treatment were recorded according to the Blauer adhesion score...

Patients with chronic liver disease of any etiology who become infected with SARS-CoV-2 have been found to have a higher risk of mortality compared to those patients who do not have chronic liver disease. A literature review was conducted in the relationship between COVID 19 and preexistence of liver disease. The proportion of COVID-19 patients with abnormal liver function on admission ranged from 40 % to 75 % and the proportion with liver injury was close to 30%. Current studies show an important association between preexisting liver disease and COVID-19...

OBJECTIVE: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), despite its minimally invasive nature, requires effective control of post-operative pain. The use of local anesthetics (LA) has been studied, but the level of evidence is low, and there is little information on important parameters such as health-related quality of life (HRQoL) or return to work. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of 0.50% levobupivacaine infiltration of incisional sites in reducing POP after LC. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, double-blind study...
