INTRODUCTION: To analyze short and medium-term results of different surgical techniques in the treatment of complicated acute diverticulitis (CAD). METHODS: Multicentre retrospective study including patients operated on as surgical emergency or deferred-urgency with the diagnosis of CAD. RESULTS: A series of 385 patients: 218 men and 167 women, mean age 64.4±15.6 years, operated on in 10 hospitals were included. The median (25(th)-75(th) percentile) time from symptoms to surgery was 48 (24-72) h, being peritonitis the main surgical indication in a 66% of cases...

Objective: to estimate the healing rate of complex surgical wounds and its associated factors. Method: retrospective cohort study from 2003 to 2014 with 160 outpatients of a Brazilian university hospital. Data were obtained through consultation of the medical records. Survival function was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression model to estimate the likelihood of the occurrence of healing. Results: the complex surgical wound healing rate was 67...

OBJECTIVES: to analyze the occurrence and predisposing factors for surgical site infection in patients submitted to heart transplantation, evaluating the relationship between cases of infections and the variables related to the patient and the surgical procedure. METHOD: retrospective cohort study, with review of the medical records of patients older than 18 years submitted to heart transplantation. The correlation between variables was evaluated by using Fisher's exact test and Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test...

OBJECTIVE: to verify the effectiveness of nursing orientation provided to families of patients in the immediate post-operative following cardiac surgery before the first visit to the post-anesthesia care unit, in decreasing anxiety levels, compared to the unit's routine orientation. METHOD: open randomized clinical trial addressing family members in the waiting room before the first visit in the immediate post-operative period. The family members assigned to the intervention group received audiovisual orientation concerning the patients' conditions at the time and the control group received the unit's routine orientation...

Models made of wax had enormous diffusion in the anatomical teaching of the 18th century. It transcended the borders of a science that impregnated with scientific knowledge the artistic expression of beauty. Based on this premise, the San Carlos Royal College of Surgery created in Madrid a large collection of anatomical models, which is currently maintained by the Javier Puerta Anatomy Museum in the School of Medicine at Madrid Complutense University. The collection began in 1786 with Ignacio Lacaba, the first dissector of the Surgery College of Madrid, whose artistic sensibility and deep knowledge of anatomy contributed and facilitated harmonization between the work of the wax sculptors and language and anatomical expression...

OBJECTIVE: estimate the prevalence of anxiety in laryngectomy patients in the pre and postoperative periods and its relation with the self-care level. METHOD: observational research of 40 patients with stage IV laryngeal cancer. Three observations took place: in the preoperative phase, at seven and at 14 days after the surgery; between June 2010 and December 2012. Two self-care levels were defined: self-sufficient and needing help for activities of daily living and treatment-related activities...

OBJECTIVE: to estimate the prevalence and factors associated with preoperative anxiety in children who wait for outpatient surgery. METHOD: cross-sectional analysis of baseline data of a prospective cohort study that investigates the predictors of postoperative pain in children aged 5-12 years submitted to inguinal and umbilical hernia repair. It was selected 210 children, which were interviewed in the preoperative holding area of a general hospital. Anxiety was evaluated using the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (mYPAS)...

BACKGROUND: Patients with pulmonary metastases from colorectal cancer (CRC) may benefit from aggressive surgical therapy. The objective of this study was to determine the role of major anatomic resection for pulmonary metastasectomy to improve survival when compared with limited pulmonary resection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data of 522 patients (64.2% men, mean age 64.5 years) who underwent pulmonary resections with curative intent for CRC metastases over a 2-year period were reviewed...

INTRODUCTION: Corpora amylacea (CoA) are present in about 60% of atrophic hippocampi resected from patients with drug resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (DRTLE). They have also been described in the lateral temporal neocortex, although less frequently. OBJECTIVE: The objective is to measure the presence, distribution and density of CoA in the lateral temporal lobes of patients with DRTLE and focal cortical dysplasia (FCD), also examining how CoA density may be linked to demographic and clinical traits...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Postoperative right ventricular (RV) systolic dysfunction is associated with perioperative myocardial ischemia, hypothermic cardiac arrest, cardiopulmonary bypass and pericardial injury. As myocardial acceleration during isovolumic contraction (IVA) and myocardial velocity during isovolumic contraction (IVV) are little affected by loading conditions, they can predict myocardial function better than conventional parameters. We investigated the usefulness of these parameters for predicting postoperative RV systolic function after isolated heart valve surgery...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Published case series on Streptococcus viridans endocarditis are scarce and outdated. The aims of our study were multiple: to analyze the profile of the Streptococcus viridans endocarditis, to compare it with other types of left-sided endocarditis and with cases caused by Staphylococcus aureus, and to determine predictors of poor outcome in Streptococcus viridans endocarditis. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We analyzed 441 episodes of endocarditis: 330 left-sided and 54 caused by Streptococcus viridans (16%)...

This article combines material from three complementary overviews presented in the Symposium on Pulmonary Venous Anomalies during the Joint Meeting of the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and Sociedad Latina de Cardiologia y Cirugia Cardiovascular Pediátrica in Lima, Peru. We discuss the embryologic basis for nomenclature, the hierarchical diagnostic categories, and the important anatomic and morphologic characteristics of anomalous pulmonary venous connections. The anatomic descriptions help to guide an understandable and sensible approach to the diagnosis and surgical management of these various disorders...

BACKGROUND: Controversy persists as regards the indications and results of surgery in the treatment of patients with stage pIIIA-N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The objective of this study was to analyze the overall survival of a multicentre series of these patients and the role of adjuvant treatment, looking for factors that may define subgroups of patients with an increased benefit from this treatment. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 287 patients, with stage pIIIA-N2 NSCLC subjected to complete resection, taken from a multi-institutional database of 2...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the correlation between intraoperative packed red blood cells transfusion and adverse outcome in a Spanish cohort of cardiac surgery patients. METHODS: Retrospective observational multicentre study. An analysis was performed on the data from 927 cardiac surgery patients treated in 24 Spanish hospitals in 2007. Patients who received intraoperative transfusions were compared with non-transfused patients. Multivariate analyses were performed (including, among others, several items from the Euroscore, surgery type, basal renal status and haemoglobin levels, and Thakar score)...

OBJECTIVES: One stop surgery (CAR: Cirugía Alta Resolución) is a step forward in outpatient surgery. The new scheme simplifies ambulatory conventional surgery, achieves more satisfaction between patients and optimizes health resources. METHODS: By One stop surgery we mean the performance in the same day of both pre-surgery assessment and surgical procedure. This new working way allows performing a surgical procedure in only one visit to the hospital, instead of the average four visits used before for surgical outpatients...
