Peformance enhancement

PURPOSE: Individuals with hearing loss engage in auditory training to improve their speech recognition. They typically practice listening to utterances spoken by unfamiliar talkers but never to utterances spoken by their most frequent communication partner (FCP)-speech they most likely desire to recognize-under the assumption that familiarity with the FCP's speech limits potential gains. This study determined whether auditory training with the speech of an individual's FCP, in this case their spouse, would lead to enhanced recognition of their spouse's speech...

There is evidence suggesting that herbal extracts demonstrate greater bioactivities than their isolated constituents at an equivalent dose. This phenomenon could be attributed to the absence of interacting substances present in the extracts. By measuring the pharmacokinetic parameters of paeoniflorin (PF) and albiflorin (AF) after being orally administered to rats in isolated form, in combination with each other and within total peony glucosides (TPG), respectively, the current study aimed to identify positive pharmacokinetic interactions between components of peony radix extracts...

STUDY DESIGN: A case report. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate a case of intradural lumbar disc herniation including imaging studies, intraoperative imaging, and an intraoperative video. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The first case of lumbar intradural disc herniation was reported as early as 1942; since then more than 150 cases have been reported, mostly in the lumbar spine. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance image (MRI) is considered the "gold standard" for diagnosing this entity, although it is rarely performed routinely in lumbar disc disease and diagnosis is often made intraoperatively...

A 78-year-old man was referred to our hospital with syncope and palpitation. A Holter electrocardiography (ECG) revealed sick sinus syndrome (SSS), and an enhanced chest computed tomography (CT) scan showed persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) and absent right superior vena cava. Myocardial leads and a pacemaker implantation were peformed through left anterior thoracotomy approach. There were only 10 reports of pacemaker implantation in a patient with SSS complicated with PLSVC and absent right superior vena cava in Japan...

Acquisition of drug-resistance conferring mutations leads to an enhanced degradation of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) affecting its immunogenicity. The mechanism of this degradation is not known. We investigated the input of proteasome in this degradation, and explored a possibility to enhance the proteasomal degradation of RTs to potentiate the immunogenic peformance of RT genes. To this end, a C-terminal fusion was made of RT with ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) that is rapidly degraded by proteasome in an ubiquitine-independent fashion...

Our aim was to evaluate the expression of transcription factors CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-beta (C/EBPbeta) and C/EBP-homologous protein (CHOP) in the growth plate. Proximal tibial epiphyseal growth plates from ten 15-day-old Wistar rats were used. Additionally, anti-proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), anti-5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) immunostaining, terminal transferase dUTP nick end-labelling (TUNEL) and nucleolar organiser region-associated proteins (AgNOR) techniques were peformed. The histological morphology of the growth plate from C/EBPbeta knock-out mice was also analysed...

An aerobic package residential wastewater treatment system was evaluated to determine process performance while connected to a single-family residence. Three components of the study were: 1) long-term (5-month) performance, 2) 24-hour performance track studies, and 3) enhanced loading study. For the long-term performance and enhanced loading study hourly influent and effluent samples were collected and composited on a flow-averaged basis. Short-term fluctuations in flow and mass loading rates were evaluated from the hourly discrete samples...
