Combination therapies are widely investigated cancer treatment modalities. Carbon based systems such as graphene oxide (GO), plasmonic nanoparticles such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and the folate analog, methotrexate (MTX), have been separately studied for their potential anticancer effects. In this study, we combined these systems to develop AgNPs-embedded GO with conjugated MTX (MTX-GO/AgNPs) and studied their folate receptor-targeted anticancer effects. Results revealed successful formation of AgNPs on GO along with MTX conjugation as suggested by UV/visible, TEM, AFM, FTIR, and XRD analysis...

BACKGROUND: Folic acid supplementation is effective in reducing the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs). However, the use of folic acid is low among rural women in China. Nutrition education can provide information about folic acid and encourage its use. The primary objective of this study was to test the effectiveness of a village-based nutrition intervention on folic acid use among rural women. METHODS: Sixty villages were randomly selected using multiple-stage sampling and were divided into control and intervention groups...

During heat stress, blunted increases in skin sympathetic nervous system activity (SSNA) and reductions in end-organ vascular responsiveness contribute to the age-related reduction in reflex cutaneous vasodilation. In older adults, folic acid supplementation improves the cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) response to passive heating; however, the influence of folic acid supplementation on SSNA:CVC transduction is unknown. Fourteen older adults (66±1yrs, 8M/6F) ingested folic acid (5mg·day(-1)) or placebo for 6 weeks in a randomized, double-blind, crossover design...

Despite the recent approval of some gene medicines and nucleic acid drugs, further improvement of delivery techniques for these drugs is strongly required. Several delivery technologies for these drugs have been developed, in other words, viral and two types of nonviral (lipofection and polyfection) vectors. Among the polyfection system, the potential use of various cyclodextrin (CyD) derivatives and CyD-appended polymers as carriers for gene and nucleic acid drugs has been demonstrated. The polyamidoamine dendrimer (G3) conjugates with α-CyD (α-CDE (G3)) have been reported to possess noteworthy properties as DNA and nucleic acid drugs carriers...

Inflammation plays a major role in colon carcinogenesis. Endogenously produced specialized proresolving lipid mediators (SPMs) play a central role in inflammation and tissue homeostasis, and have been implicated in carcinogenesis. We studied the associations of plasma levels of two SPMs [lipoxin A4 (LXA4 ) and resolvin D1(RvD1)] with risk for recurrent adenoma. In this pilot study, we used data and biosamples from an adenoma chemoprevention study investigating the effects of aspirin and/or folic acid on the occurrence of colorectal adenomas...

Chronic atrophic autoimmune gastritis (CAAG) is an organ-specific autoimmune disease characterized by an immune response, which is directed towards the parietal cells and intrinsic factor of the gastric body and fundus and leads to hypochlorhydria, hypergastrinemia and inadequate production of the intrinsic factor. As a result, the stomach's secretion of essential substances, such as hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor, is reduced, leading to digestive impairments. The most common is vitamin B12 deficiency, which results in a megaloblastic anemia and iron malabsorption, leading to iron deficiency anemia...

PURPOSE: The folate receptor (FR) has emerged as an interesting diagnostic and therapeutic drug target with many potential applications in oncologic and inflammatory disorders. It was therefore the aim of this study to develop a folate-derived Ga-68-based positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer that is straightforward to radiolabel and could be broadly used in clinical studies. We validated its target binding affinity and specificity and compared it to [(99m)Tc]EC20, the folate single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging tracer that has been most extensively studied clinically so far...

Radiotherapy is a critical strategy and standard adjuvant approach to glioblastoma treatment. One of the major challenges facing radiotherapy is to minimize radiation damage to normal tissue without compromising therapeutic effects on cancer cells. Various agents and numerous approaches have been developed to improve the therapeutic index of radiotherapy. Among them, radiosensitizers have attracted much attention because they selectively increase susceptibility of cancer cells to radiation and thus enhance biological effectiveness of radiotherapy...

This study was to develop a codrug delivery system for targeting cancer therapy based on magnetic RNA nanoflowers (RNA NF). Compared with traditional nucleic acid structure, convenient separation can be achieved by introducing magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) into RNA NF. Folic acid (FA) modified MNP/RNA NF (FA/MNP/RNA NF) was used as a targeting nanocarrier with excellent biocompatibility to overcome the nonselectivity of MNP/RNA NF. And then, anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) and photosensitizer 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis (1-methylpyridinium-4-yl) porphyrin (TMPyP4) binding with RNA NF were used as codrug cargo models...

Mitoxantrone (MTO) is a potent drug used to treat breast cancer; however, efforts to expand its applicability have been limited by the risk of cardiotoxicity. In this study, we successfully conjugated MTO or folic acid (FA) to a synthesized d-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 2000 succinate (TPGS2k), which were short for MCT or FCT. These two micellar materials could self-assemble to form MCT micelles or MCT/FCT mixed micelles (FMCT) aiming to lower systemic toxicity, enhance entrapment efficiency and provide a platform for targeting delivery...

The introduction of mandatory fortification of grains with folate in 1998 in the United States resulted in 767 fewer spina bifida cases annually and a cost savings of $603 million per year. However, far more significant medical cost savings result from preventing common diseases, including myocardial infarction, stroke, dementia and osteoporosis. A cost-effectiveness analysis showed a gain of 266,649 quality-adjusted life-years and $3.6 billion saved annually, mainly due to the reduction of cardiac infarction...
