In the practice of nursing, organizations with progressive evidence-based practice programs implement structures and processes whereby nurses are engaged in the review of existing research and in the development of clinical practice documents to better align nursing practices with the best available scientific knowledge. At our academic hospital system, clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) took the lead to help transform a traditional nursing policy and procedure committee into a hospital-wide, staff-represented Clinical Practice Council (CPC) that ensures evidence-based nursing practices are reflected in the organization's nursing practice documents for the provision of patient care...

BACKGROUND: Art therapy is used in the whole field of psycho-oncological maintenance to support coping mechanisms with creative techniques. Previous studies stated effects of art therapy just by referring to the participants' ratings. This study wants to extend the perspective by including the views of all involved parties--participating patients, dropouts, art therapist and supervisor. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We developed and tested an art therapy programme for cancer patients...

BACKGROUND: The demand for bilateral mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction has increased in recent years, primarily due to the development of genetic testing. The aim of this study was to evaluate if there was a difference between anatomically shaped and round permanent expandable implants in one-stage bilateral breast reconstruction after bilateral prophylactic mastectomy. METHODS: The anatomically shaped permanent expander implant McGhan Style 150 (Inamed, Santa Barbara, Calif...

INTRODUCTION: Round expander-implants (Beckers 25 and 50) and anatomical expander-prostheses filled with firm cohesive gel (McGhan Style 150) are established choices for single-stage expander breast reconstruction. Because of their drawbacks we selectively adopted the anatomical Becker-35 expander-implant filled with soft cohesive gel from January 2005. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients undergoing reconstructive breast surgery using the Contour Profile Becker-35 expandable implant over a two-year period were retrospectively reviewed with respect to indication, implant sizes, inflation details, complications and outcomes...

To prepare their students and residents for the practice of medicine in a rapidly changing environment, medical educators must teach the business of medicine as well as the science and art of medicine. Recognizing the value of and demand for physician leaders, the authors sought to introduce residents to diverse aspects of medical administration within the context of an academically rigorous internal medicine residency program. The Physician Management Pathway (PMP) was developed in 1997 to expose interested residents to the management concepts employed by physician managers; to help physician trainees begin to develop the leadership and technical skills they will use as physician managers; to provide career mentoring; to provide experiences that enrich the resident's training in clinical medicine; to enhance resident-directed educational activities; and to produce physicians who can successfully work in any health care environment...

The ability to effectively and efficiently develop competent head nurses is a major challenge in today's health care environment. Memorial Hospital of South Bend, IN, a 526-bed tertiary care facility, faced this challenge. As a result, a program was developed that reduced the learning time of newly appointed head nurses. Mentoring and hands-on practical learning strategies were used. This article describes (1) the reasons for developing a competency-based head nurse orientation program, (2) the steps necessary for its implementation, (3) the benefits of such a program, and (4) the results of the program at Memorial Hospital...
