Pediatric sleep-disordered breathing, also known as obstructive sleep apnea and hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) in children, is caused by obstruction of upper airway, characterized by repetitive pauses in breathing during sleep despite the effort to breathe, and usually leads to reduction in oxygen saturation. Due to the importance of sufficient oxygen in growth and development, many children patients suffer from abnormal secretion of growth hormone at night, and also their activity and resting of cerebral cortex during sleep...

With decreasing number of patients subjected to tonsilectomy, the number of paratonsillitis patients, on the contrary, is on the increase. Among 1718 patients with paratonsillitis observed and treated by the author in 1985-1996, 313 had infiltration and 1405 patients--abscess stage of paratonsillitis. 284 (20.2%) of the latter underwent abscesstonsilectomy. 32, 96 and 4 patients had bilateral, recurrent and extensive paratonsillitis, respectively. Complicating parapharyngitis occurred in 55 (3.2%) patients...

Penetration of ciprofloxacin into human tonsils was studied in 20 adult humans undergoing tonsilectomy. Ten patients received a single intravenous infusion of 200 mg ciprofloxacin within 15 min (group A) and 14 patients were treated orally for three days with 500 mg ciprofloxacin b.i.d. prior to a preoperative infusion of 200 mg (group B). Ciprofloxacin concentrations in serum and tonsils were determined microbiologically. Mean ciprofloxacin serum concentrations did not differ significantly between both groups...

Clinical observations and experiences in the treatment of 52 patients with tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis are presented during the period of 15 yrs. In all patients the diagnosis was confirmed by pathohistological analysis of extirpated lymph nodes. In 88% of patients the caseous necrosis form of tuberculosis was histologically verified while in 12% the productive one. In 87% of patients the tuberculous process was localised unilaterally and in 13% bilaterally. Deep lymph nodes were more frequently involved than those on the surface (58%:42%)...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
G Siegel, J Wilke
We have studied at 200 tonsils the tissue concentration and the organ content of RNA, DNA and protein. The results are used for the objective discrimination of different clinical states. It could be shown that the time of the maximal physiological activity reaches to the age of 20 years. Our results may be used as directions for the indication of the tonsilectomy.

In young adults with Hodgkin's disease, cell mediated immunity (CMI) was evaluated retrospectively from their health records. The register of records from the school health service of the Copenhagen Council was scrutinized in order to find the records of those with HD born between 1930 and 1950 in whom the disease had been diagnosed between 1943 and 1975. Whenever possible, three controls were selected from the register for each case; they were comparable in respect of sex, year and month of birth and socio-economic background...
