PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes among subjects with mandibular overdentures supported by one or two immediately placed dental implants 5 years after loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six subjects (16 men and 20 women) received one or two dental implants in the anterior mandible, and all implants were loaded the day of surgery. Subjects were scheduled for follow-up 3-, 6-, and 12 months after implant placement and thereafter annually for 4 more years...

This pilot study was designed to collect initial data on overdenture attachment retention in varying configurations of attachment location in an implant-retained mandibular overdenture. A clear acrylic model of a mandible with 6 numbered implants and Locator resilient abutments was used to simulate implant placement in a patient. A clear acrylic denture was fabricated with 6 Locator housings to match the implants in the model. Attachments were tested in 4 different configurations: 2 implants, 2 and 5 (T25); 4 implants, 2-5 (T2345); 4 implants, 1, 3, 4, and 6 (T1346); and 6 implants, 1-6 (T1-6)...

The aim of this invitro study was to evaluate the effect of implant position and edentulous span length on stresses around implants assisting claspless distal extension partial overdentures.Four bilateral mandibular distal extension acrylic models were constructed. Two implants were inserted in the distal extension ridges parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ridges. Based on the implant position, models were categorized into two groups: Group I, mesial implants position and Group II, distal implant position...

: Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has been used for prediction of stress and strain between dental implant components and bone in the implant design process. PURPOSE: Purpose of this study was to characterize and analyze stress and strain distribution occurring in bone and implants and to compare stress and strain of three different implant designs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three different mini dental implant designs were included in this study: 1...

AIM: The aim of this study is to systematically evaluate and compare implant retained fixed restoration versus implant retained over denture. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Search was made in 2 databases including PubMed and PubMed Central. Title and abstract were screened to select studies comparing implant retained fixed restorations versus implant retained removable overdentures. Articles which did not follow the inclusion criteria were excluded. Included papers were then read carefully for a second stage filter, this was followed by manual searching of bibliography of selected articles...

Data sourcesMedline via Pubmed and the Cochrane Library were searched from January 1980 to September 2013. This was complemented by a manual search of the magazines Deutsche Zahnaerztliche Zeitung, Quintessenz, Zeitschrift für Zahnärztliche Implantologie, Schweizerische Monatszeitschrift and Implantologie. Additionally, the list of reference s of all selected full-text articles and related reviews were further scrutinised for potential included studies in English or German.Study selectionThree review authors independently searched for clinical trials that assessed the muscular activity in the intervention groups: edentulous patients treated with implant-overdentures (IODs) and implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (ISFDPs) and the comparison groups: dentates and edentulous patients treated with mucosa-borne complete removable dental prostheses (CRDPs)...

Few studies have evaluated the interaction between conventional complete dentures (CCD) and the respiratory system and the authors are unaware of any that evaluated the interaction between implant-retained overdentures (IROs) and the respiratory system. This clinical report documented the effects of wearing an IRO on the cardiorespiratory stability of an edentulous patient with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). A 64-year-old woman was referred to the department of otolaryngology because of daytime sleepiness and morning headaches...

Complete edentulism often limits patients' ability to masticate and perform other oral functions, resulting in a reduction of oral-health-related quality of life. Although the two-implant mandibular overdenture may be considered as a minimum standard of treatment of complete edentulism, patients often prefer conventional complete dentures due to cost and surgical procedures related to implant supported dentures. Many complete denture patients may have limited access to dental care due to socioeconomic or health issues, hence there is a need in simplification of complete denture fabrication...

This study evaluated the effect of implant diameter on strain around implants retaining mandibular overdentures with Locator attachments. Three mandibular acrylic resin models were constructed with 2 implants inserted in canine areas and classified according to implant diameter into 3 groups: large (4.2 mm), medium (3.7 mm), and small (3.3 mm) diameter implants. Duplicate dentures were connected to the implants with Locator attachments. Four strain gauges were bonded to the acrylic resin at mesial, distal, buccal and lingual surfaces of each implant and strain was measured at loading and non-loading sides during 1st premolar and 1st molar loading...

The aim of the retrospective study was to assess the clinical and radiographic outcome of the dental implant surgery and prosthetics. It was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, and comprised of medical charts and radiographic records of patients visiting between 2010 and 2015. Variables such as implant dimensions, final prosthesis, method of retention, loading protocol and patient factors were analysed. A total of 223 implants (143(64.1%) in maxilla and 80(35.9%) in mandible) were placed in 92 subjects (50(54...

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The rehabilitation of patients after a maxillectomy involves the use of an obturator to seal oral-nasal-sinus communication and to facilitate mastication, swallowing, and speech. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate different attachment systems used for implant-retained obturators at dissipation loads and under shear forces. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Photoelastic models were fabricated with 3 external hexagon implants at the incisor, canine, and first molar regions...

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Implant angulation should be considered when selecting an attachment. Some in vitro studies have investigated the relationship between implant angulation and changes in the retention force of the stud attachment, but few studies have evaluated the effect of cyclic loading and repeated cycles of insertion and removal on the stud attachment. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of implant angulation on the retentive characteristics of overdentures with 2 different stud attachments, an experimental system and O-rings in red and orange, after cyclic loading and repeated insertion and removal cycles...

PURPOSE: Maxillary implant overdentures are often designed without palatal coverage to maximize wearer comfort. Although palateless dentures have been reported to be less rigid than conventional dentures, and require reinforcement to prevent complications, there is little documentation about the effects of such reinforcement. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of reinforcement on the strain on maxillary implant overdentures supported by implants in a variety of configurations...

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to explore the association between marginal bone loss and type of peri-implant bony defect determined using a new peri-implant bony defect classification system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 110 patients with implant-supported mandibular overdentures were involved. Clinical information was collected, including gender, age, smoking habit, and the overdenture attachment system used. Peri-implant bony defect types and marginal distances (ie, distance between the marginal bone level and the top of the implant shoulder) of all sites were identified on panoramic radiographs by a single experienced observer...
