Tularemia which is a multisystem disease of humans and some animals, is endemic in North America, some parts of Europe and Asia. The causative agent, Francisella tularensis, is a fastidious gram-negative, intracellular bacterium which requires supplementation with sulphydryl compounds (cysteine, cystine, thiosulphate, isoVitaleX) for growth on common laboratory media. In this report, a case of oropharyngeal tularemia diagnosed by the isolation of the causative agent on non-selective-common microbiological agar, has been presented...

OBJECTIVES: Analysing how systemic antibiotic agents were dispensed to outpatients in a Colombian population between January 2005 and December 2006 and assessing their economic cost as antibiotic use and abuse have been related to serious bacterial resistance. METHODS: This was a descriptive observational study of antibiotic drug use; a database was compiled from medication usage records maintained by dispensing pharmacies in 10 Colombian cities regarding the total of users who had received some type of antibiotic...

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease is subacute, necrotizing lymphadenopathy affecting mainly young women, and manifested by cervical lymphadenopathy. It is often observed, and described in Asia, but in other world regions sporadically too. Etiology is unknown, but it has been postulated that this condition is induced by infectious factor. We described a case of 20-year-old Caucasian woman with diagnosis of Kikuchi-Fujimoto lymphadenopathy. First symptoms as a cervical lymph nodes enlargement 2 cm in diameter was associated with elevated body temperature, without associated symptoms of infection appeared about one year ago (data from history)...

Uncomplicated urinary infections are a significant and growing cause of morbidity amongst young women. Commonly these infections are caused by Escherichia coil or Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Escherichia coil is resistant to several empirical antibiotics: amoxicilin, trimetoprima-sulfametozaxol and, more recently, to some more old flouroquinolons. Gemifloxacin is a flouroquinolon with an excellent in vitro activity against many community acquired bacteria which cause respiratory or urinary infections. This antibiotic has a very unique and dual action mechanism directed against girasa and topoisomerasa II DNA, which grants minimum low inhibitory concentrations against Escherichia coil, Klebsiella and S...

Parapharyngeal and retropharyngeal infections, which can potentially cause life-threatening complications, could be treated conservatively with no need for surgical drainage. A retrospective analysis of all patients diagnosed with retropharyngeal and parapharyngeal infections was performed. Information regarding age, sex, presenting symptoms, physical examination, laboratory and imaging evaluations, management, duration of hospital stay, and complications were reviewed. Seven children were identified, 4 with retropharyngeal abscess and 3 with parapharyngeal abscess...

INTRODUCTION: Rhinosinusitis is one of the more common diseases encountered in outpatient visits to health care. The objective of this study was to determine the most cost-effective antibiotic treatment for patients with acute (RSA) and chronic rhinosinusitis (RSC) that is available at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). METHODS: Cost-effectiveness analysis of RSA and RSC treatment from an institutional perspective. Effectiveness outcome was defined as the percentage of cure...

This study was performed to investigate whether the use of prophylactic antibiotics has an effect on postoperative infection rate. A total of 500 patients were classified into 3 groups based on their diagnosis. Approximately half of the cases received amoxicilin/clavulanate combination the other half had no antibiotics. Wound infection was observed in the post operative period. According to our clinical findings, antibiotic prophylaxis is not necessary in plastic surgery in all patients...

We have evaluated prospectively GBS vaginal colonization in pregnant women and we have tried to determine the risk factors of the colonization by GBS and the particularities of the different isolated strains. We have screened 300 pregnant women with vaginal and anal sample in a same swab. Thirty nine (13%) pregnant women are colonized by SGB, 0% in the first trimester, 10.2% in the second trimester and 17% in the third trimester...

Clinical signs of Lyme boreliosis in humans are versatile and in their whole scope they finally affect the nervous system, heart, and joints. The therapeutic effect of antibiotics is maximal in the first acute stage of the disease when doxycycline and amoxiciline are administered. These antibiotics possess a comparable in vitro effect, tissue penetration, pharmacokinetics, and therapeutic effect. The treatment of disseminated infections in the second stage, such as neuroborreliosis, carditis, and iritis, is difficult and with relative success they are treated with large doses of penicillin G, or cefriaxon, and doxycycline...

Bacterial adherence to the cellular substrate (skin and mucosa) represents a precondition of infectious pathology. It was demonstrated that bacteria which adhere and form biofilms on catheters and other inert materials used in medicine are resistant to the therapeutic antibiotic concentrations being protected by the biofilm mathrix and generating severe and hard to treat infections. There are only few studies on the influence of antibiotics on the bacterial adhesins synthesis and bacterial adherence to the cellular substrate...
