intestinal anstomosis

M Ch Velibekova, A X Kerimov
202 patients with rectal cancer, complicated by the intestinal obstruction were operated on. There were 93 (46,1%) men and 109 (53,9%)women. Age was 25-80 years. 41(20,3%) patients had radical operations with resection of the rectum and anastomosis. The operation was finished with end-to-end intestinal anstomosis in 34 cases; the rest 7 cases had the side-to-side or end-to-side anastomosis. Rectum resection with colostomy was performed in 91 (45,0%) patients. 70 (34,6%) patients with the decompensated intestinal obstruction with polyorgan failure had palliative operations with ileostomy (14 cases) or two-side colostomy (56 patients)...

We focused on the therapeutic effect of the stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 and how its action is related to nitric oxide (NO) in persistent colocutaneous fistula in rats (at 5 cm from anus, colon defect of 5 mm, skin defect of 5 mm); this peptide has been shown to be safe in clinical trials for inflammatory bowel disease (PL14736) and safe for intestinal anstomosis therapy. BPC 157 (10 microg/kg, 10 ng/kg) was applied i) in drinking water until the animals were sacrificed at post-operative day 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21, and 28; or ii) once daily intraperitoneally (first application 30 min following surgery, last 24 h before sacrifice) alone or with N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (5 mg/kg), L-arginine (200 mg/kg), and their combinations...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to review the principal effects of probiotics on pouchitis and identify their mechanisms of action. METHODS: The study was based on a review of all relevant studies published in the literature on the effects of probiotics in pouchitis and their possible mechanisms of action. RESULTS: Pouchitis is the major long-term complication after ileal pouch anal anstomosis for ulcerative colitis. The cause is still unknown but is likely to be multifactorial...

Colon conduit, with nonrefluxing ureterosigmoid anastomoses, was performed upon 21 children in the past 3 1/2 yr for the following indications: (1) previously unoperated exstrophy of the bladder; (2) exstrophy of the bladder with prior ileal conduit; (3) previously unoperated neurogenic bladder; (4) neurogenic bladder with prior ileal conduit; and (5) with anterior pelvic exenteration for sarcoma of the prostate. In some of these patients the conduit will be a permanent diversion; in others it will be anastomosed later to the colon, providing a staged method of ureterosigmoid urinary diversion...
