Asian noses are mainly characterized by a low nasal dorsum, a short nose and an underprojected nasal tip due to underdeveloped (short and weak) alar cartilages. The goals of the surgery are to increase the tip projection, elongate the nose and augment the dorsum. In Asian noses the structural approach helps strengthen the weak cartilages and add definition to the nasal tip. There are various methods to increase tip projection and definition. Columellar strut, caudal septal extension graft, tip grafts and lateral crural grafts in order to elongate the upper legs of the nasal tip tripod can be used...

A 6-year-old girl with unbalanced atrioventricular septal defect, hypoplastic right ventricle, and severe common atrioventricular valve regurgitation developed patient-prosthetic mismatch. At 6 months old, she underwent primary one and one-half ventricle repair and replacement of left side atrioventricular valve. A catheter examination showed that her right ventricular end-diastolic volume increased from 39.4 mL/m(2) 1 year after to 70 mL/m(2) 3.5 years after the previous surgery. Thus, at the timing of redo left side atrioventricular valve replacement, she was converted successfully to biventricular circulation...

Aims: Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) is associated with a particularly high non-response rate in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to assess the effectiveness of triple-site (Tri-V) pacing CRT in this population. Methods and results: Prospective observational study of patients with permanent AF who underwent CRT implantation with an additional right ventricle lead in the outflow tract septal wall. After implantation, programming mode (Tri-V or biventricular pacing) was selected based on cardiac output determination...

Filamentous fungi are a large and ancient clade of microorganisms that occupy a broad range of ecological niches. The success of filamentous fungi is largely due to their elongate hypha, a chain of cells, separated from each other by septa. Hyphae grow by polarized exocytosis at the apex, which allows the fungus to overcome long distances and invade many substrates, including soils and host tissues. Hyphal tip growth is initiated by establishment of a growth site and the subsequent maintenance of the growth axis, with transport of growth supplies, including membranes and proteins, delivered by motors along the cytoskeleton to the hyphal apex...

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the statistical noise of motion-frozen (MF) image generated by gated myocardial perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging using IQ · SPECT and to determine the optimal acquisition and reconstruction parameters for MF image using IQ · SPECT. METHODS: A movement cardiac phantom and static cardiac phantom were used to acquire the MF images. The acquisition times used were different in 8 and 16 frames per R-R interval, and varying reconstruction parameters (subset and iteration) were used...

Cardiac catheterization has greatly contributed to the progress made in the management of congenital heart diseases (CHD). Initially used in diagnosis, it allowed the understanding of heart diseases, their anatomy and hemodynamics. Gradually, the development of interventional cardiology has played a major role in the management of these malformations (Patent ductus arteriosus [PDA] and atrial septal defect [ASD] closure, pulmonary dilatation, percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation…). The development of such technology was made possible through the concomitant development of imaging techniques: fluoroscopy, ultrasound, MRI and CT...

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to use a new catheter technique to split the anterior mitral valve leaflet (AML) and prevent iatrogenic left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction immediately before transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). BACKGROUND: LVOT obstruction is a life-threatening complication of TMVR, caused by septal displacement of the AML. METHODS: The procedure was used in patients with severe mitral valve disease and prohibitive surgical risk...

BACKGROUND: Oxygen supply as a lifesaving intervention is frequently used to treat preterm infants suffering additionally from possible prenatal or perinatal pathogen features. The impact of oxygen and/or physical lung injury may influence the morphological lung development, leading to a chronic postnatal lung disease called bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). At present different experimental BPD models are used. However, there are no systematic comparative studies regarding different influences of oxygen on morphological lung maturation...

Prolonged left atrial electromechanical conduction time is related with atrial electrical remodeling, and is predictive of the development of atrial fibrillation. The aim of our study was to examine whether left atrial electromechanical conduction time (EMT) and left atrial strain as measured by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) are predictors for the development of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with mitral stenosis (MS) at 5-year follow-up. A total of 81 patients (61% females; mean age 38.1 ± 12...

BACKGROUND: We previously reported a higher prevalence of nasal obstructive disorders (NOD) in pediatric patients with persistent allergic rhinitis (PER) not responding to medical treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of NOD on quality of life (QoL) in this population. METHODS: Real-life prospective study including 142 patients (41 children, 6-11 yo and 101 adolescents, 12-17 yo) with moderate and severe PER. After two months of medical treatment (intranasal steroids and antihistamines) patients were asked if their symptoms had improved (yes/no) and classified accordingly in R, responders and NR, non-responders...

Study Design Prospective cohort. Setting Tertiary academic referral center. Subjects Patients with nasal obstruction due to septal deviation. Methods Patients completed the NOSE questionnaire preoperatively and indicated the change from their baseline score that they would consider the minimum improvement required to define the septoplasty with turbinate reduction as successful...

Advancement in imaging techniques and interventional cardiology procedures have generated renewed interest in anatomy of tricuspid valve complex. The purpose of the present study was to characterize the morphology of tricuspid valve leaflets using objective criteria. Thirty-six embalmed cadaveric hearts were utilized for the present study. Leaflet morphology was studied using newly defined criteria. Commissural zones were identified and leaflets were delineated. Presence of scallops was also recorded. Single leaflet was observed in six cases, double in 26 cases, and triple in four cases...

The nuclear organization of the cholinergic, catecholaminergic, serotonergic and orexinergic neurons in the brains of two species of carnivore, the banded mongoose (Mungos mungo) and domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo), is presented. The banded mongoose belongs to the feliform suborder and the domestic ferret to the caniform suborder, having last shared a common ancestor approximately 53 million years ago; however, they have a very similar overall morphology and life history, presenting an interesting opportunity to examine the extent of evolutionary plasticity in these systems...

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV-1 infection are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease than seronegative adults. Treatment of dyslipidaemia with statins has been challenging in people with HIV because of an increased potential for drug interactions due to competing cytochrome P450 metabolism between statins and commonly used antiretroviral agents. Neither pitavastatin nor pravastatin depend on cytochrome P450 for primary metabolism. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of pitavastatin versus pravastatin in adults with HIV and dyslipidaemia...
