BACKGROUND: A negative sinus P wave in lead V2 (NPV2 ) of the electrocardiogram (ECG) is rare when leads are positioned correctly. This study was undertaken to clarify the significance of an unusually high incidence of this anomaly found in ECGs at my institution. METHODS: One thousand four hundred thirty-five ECGs were randomly selected to determine the incidence and gender frequency in tracings showing positive (PPV2 ), and biphasic (BPV2 ) P waves in V2 , as well as NPV2 ...

Basal forebrain cholinergic neurons constitute a way station for many ascending and descending pathways. These cholinergic neurons have a role in eliciting cortical activation and arousal. It is well established that they are mainly involved in cognitive processes requiring increased levels of arousal, attentive states and/or cortical activation with desynchronized activity in the EEG. These cholinergic neurons are modulated by several afferents of different neurotransmitter systems. Of particular importance within the cortical targets of basal forebrain neurons is the hippocampal cortex...

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to evaluate the diagnostic potential of digital rectal examination in the identification of a true rectocele. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study utilising 187 archived data sets of women presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms and/or pelvic organ prolapse between August 2012 and November 2013. Evaluation included a standardised interview, ICS-POPQ, rectal examination and 4D translabial ultrasound...

Fusarium graminearum is the main causal agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB) on wheat and barley. In a previous study, a GIN4-like protein kinase gene, GIL1, was found to be important for plant infection and sexual reproduction. In this study we further characterized the functions of GIL1 kinase in different developmental processes. The Δgil1 mutants were reduced in growth, conidiation, and virulence, and formed whitish and compact colonies. Although phialide formation was rarely observed in the mutants, deletion of GIL1 resulted in increased hyphal branching and increased tolerance to cell wall and cell membrane stresses...

BACKGROUND: The relationship between changes in endocardial cushion and resultant congenital heart diseases (CHD) has yet to be established. It has been shown that increased regurgitant flow early in embryonic heart development leads to endocardial cushion defects, but it remains unclear how abnormal endocardial cushions during the looping stages might affect the fully septated heart. The goal of this study was to reproducibly alter blood flow in vivo and then quantify the resultant effects on morphology of endocardial cushions in the looping heart and on CHDs in the septated heart...

The bacterial tubulin FtsZ is the central component of the cell division machinery, coordinating an ensemble of proteins involved in septal cell wall synthesis to ensure successful constriction. How cells achieve this coordination is unknown. We found that in Escherichia coli cells, FtsZ exhibits dynamic treadmilling predominantly determined by its guanosine triphosphatase activity. The treadmilling dynamics direct the processive movement of the septal cell wall synthesis machinery but do not limit the rate of septal synthesis...

The mechanism by which bacteria divide is not well understood. Cell division is mediated by filaments of FtsZ and FtsA (FtsAZ) that recruit septal peptidoglycan-synthesizing enzymes to the division site. To understand how these components coordinate to divide cells, we visualized their movements relative to the dynamics of cell wall synthesis during cytokinesis. We found that the division septum was built at discrete sites that moved around the division plane. FtsAZ filaments treadmilled circumferentially around the division ring and drove the motions of the peptidoglycan-synthesizing enzymes...

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most frequently diagnosed congenital cyanotic heart disease. It is often associated with additional findings, such as atrial septal defect (i.e., pentalogy of Fallot) or right sided aortic arch. Association of this pentalogy of Fallot with situs inversus totalis is rarely reported in paediatric literature and it can cause technical challenges to intracardiac repair. We report the case of pentalogy of Fallot with dextrocardia and situs inversus presenting as parieto-occipital abscess in a 12-year-old child...

Isolated Unilateral hypoplasia or agenesis of a branch of pulmonary artery is very rare. It is usually seen associated with congenital heart diseases such as tetralogy of Fallot, atrial septal defect, coarctation of the aorta, right aortic arch, truncus arteriosus, patent ductus arteriosus and pulmonary atresia. It occurs as a result of lack of embryological development of either the left or right sixth aortic arch and has been found to present itself with various clinical manifestations as during childhood it presents as contralateral pulmonary hypertension and in adults as haemoptysis...

INTRODUCTION: Recently, the surgical management of nasal tumors has been greatly influenced by advanced endoscopic techniques. To achieve complete endoscopic resection of large obstructing nasal tumors, a sufficient corridor for adequate exposure is also required. In the Japanese language, TACMI means "master expert," and herein we describe an endoscopic technique with novel elements that we term transseptal access with crossing multiple incisions (TACMI). This approach enables a direct transseptal approach to the pedicle through tumor transposition while allowing complete septal reconstruction and stability...

In retired professional association football (soccer) players with a past history of repetitive head impacts, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a potential neurodegenerative cause of dementia and motor impairments. From 1980 to 2010, 14 retired footballers with dementia were followed up regularly until death. Their clinical data, playing career, and concussion history were prospectively collected. Next-of-kin provided consent for six to have post-mortem brain examination. Of the 14 male participants, 13 were professional and 1 was a committed amateur...

Localized ventricular septal hypertrophy, also known as idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis or idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic septal obstruction (IHSS), can create severe ventricular outflow obstruction. This often results in a high sub-aortic pressure gradient with potentially lethal symptoms. In 1960, Braunwald described the hemodynamic characteristics of IHSS, and thereafter, Morrow developed a trans-aortic approach to resect a large part of the ventricular septum, enlarging the outflow tract. The Morrow operation has remained the gold standard for surgically treating this pathology...

BACKGROUND: Brazil, the largest country and economy in South America, is a major driving force behind the development of new medical technologies in the region. Robotic cardiac surgery (RCS) has been evolving rapidly since 2010, when the first surgery using the DaVinci(®) robotic system was performed in Latin America. The aim of this article is to evaluate short and mid-term results in patients undergoing robotic cardiac surgery in Brazil. METHODS: From March 2010 to December 2015, 39 consecutive patients underwent robotic cardiac surgery...

BACKGROUND: In the past two decades, the introduction of robotic technology has facilitated minimally invasive cardiac surgery, allowing surgeons to operate endoscopically rather than through a median sternotomy. This approach has facilitated procedures for several structural heart conditions, including mitral valve repair, atrial septal defect closure and multivessel minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting. In this rapidly evolving field, we review the status of robotic cardiac surgery in Europe with a focus on mitral valve surgery and coronary revascularization...
