Cardiac valve plane displacement (CVPD) reflects longitudinal LV function. The purpose of the present study was to determine regional heterogeneity of CVPD in healthy adults to provide normal values by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). We measured the anterior aortic plane systolic excursion (AAPSE); the anterior, anterolateral, inferolateral, inferior, and inferoseptal mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE); and the lateral tricuspid annulus plane systolic excursion (TAPSE). Systolic excursion was measured as the distance from peak end-diastolic to peak end-sysstolic annular position (peak-to-peak) in cine images acquired in 2-, 3- and 4-chamber views...

Bacillus subtilis possesses 2 DNA translocases that affect late stages of chromosome segregation: SftA separates nonsegregated DNA prior to septum closure, while SpoIIIE rescues septum-entrapped DNA. We provide evidence that SftA is associated with the division machinery via a stretch of 47 amino acids within its N-terminus, suggesting that SftA is recruited by protein-protein interactions with a component of the division machinery. SftA was also recruited to mid-cell in the absence of its first 20 amino acids, which are proposed to contain a membrane-binding motif...

Decreased coaptation height in adults has been identified as a marker of early valve failure. We evaluated aortic valve coaptation and effective height in healthy children and in children with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) with aortic cusp prolapse (ACP), using echocardiography. We included 45 subjects with VSD with ACP, 27 did not develop aortic regurgitation (AR) by ACP and 18 developed AR by ACP, and 83 healthy children as controls. Aortic root anatomy was estimated using the parasternal long-axis view...

AIMS: In adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) heart failure is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality but experience with and reported outcome of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is limited. We investigated the efficacy of CRT in adults with CHD. METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a retrospective study including 48 adults with CHD who received CRT since 2003 in four tertiary referral centres. Responders were defined as patients who showed improvement in NYHA functional class and/or systemic ventricular ejection fraction by at least one category...

The association of complete atrial ventricular septal defect (cAVSD) with tetralogy of Fallot remains a complex malformation that involves both inlet and outlet components of the ventricles. The surgical treatment used to be, in the 1980s, a staged repair strategy due to the high mortality rate of first primary repairs (PRs). However, nowadays, PRs have better outcomes. Although double-patch procedures are widely performed, this article describes the single-patch approach for cAVSD repair with transatrial-transpulmonary repair of the Fallot component with preservation of the pulmonary valve...

Pyruvate dehydrogenase reaction utilizing glucose-derived pyruvate is an almost exclusive source of acetyl-CoA in different cell mitochondrial compartments of the brain. In neuronal mitochondria, the largest fraction of acetyl-CoA is utilized for energy production and the much smaller one for N-acetyl-L-aspartate (NAA) synthesis. Cholinergic neurons, unlike others, require additional amounts of acetyl-CoA for acetylcholine synthesis. Therefore, several neurotoxic signals, which inhibit pyruvate dehydrogenase, generate deeper shortages of acetyl-CoA and greater mortality of cholinergic neurons than noncholinergic ones...

Muscular septal aneurysms are extremely rare without a ventricular septal defect and are diagnosed accidentally in most cases. Reported cases generally have rhythm disturbance or electrocardiographic findings of Wolf-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. Presently described are 2 cases of ventricular septal aneurysm associated with WPW syndrome, which presented as dilated cardiomyopathy. Pre-excitation disappeared gradually in first patient. There was also concurrent decrease in degree of bulging of the interventricular septum and improvement of left ventricular systolic function...

Septal reduction therapy (SRT) is the accepted therapeutic option for symptomatic hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). At this time, surgical septal myectomy is the gold standard method, but alcohol septal ablation is an acceptable alternative treatment for patients with suitable anatomy. Endocardial septal ablation (ESA) therapy is a little-known method of SRT. Presently described is case of successful ESA procedure performed for HOCM.

Aortic atresia with an associated ventricular septal defect and adequate sized left ventricle is extremely rare. We present two cases in which an alternate diagnosis was suggested on echocardiography because the hypoplastic aortic trunk was missed due to its small caliber. The final diagnosis was, however, clinched on dual source computed tomography, which not only showed the thin aortic trunk but also clearly depicted the coronary artery origins from the hypoplastic aortic root. To the best of our knowledge, use of multi-detector computed tomography in aortic atresia with well developed left ventricle has not been reported in literature till date...
