Previous studies have shown that Dendrobium nobile Lindl. alkaloids (DNLAs) have neuroprotective effects in several Alzheimer's disease (AD) models. Dendrobine (DDB) is one of the monomer components with the highest content in DNLAs. However, the effects of DDB on cognitive impairments in AD remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of DDB in 3 × Tg-AD mice to determine whether DDB was a key component of the anti-AD effect of DNLAs. Five-month mice were intragastrically administrated with DDB (10 and 20 mg/kg/d) or DNLAs (20 mg/kg/d) for seven consecutive months, and the effects of DDB and DNLAs were evaluated at twelve months...

OBJECTIVES: Accurate outcome prediction is important for making informed clinical decisions in cancer treatment. In this study, we assessed the feasibility of using changes in radiomic features over time (Delta radiomics: absolute and relative) following chemotherapy, to predict relapse/progression and time to progression (TTP) of primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (PMBCL) patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Given the lack of standard staging PET scans until 2011, only 31 out of 103 PMBCL patients in our retrospective study had both pre-treatment and end-of-treatment (EoT) scans...

BACKGROUND: The burden of cervical cancer in Ghana is high due to a lack of a national screening and vaccination program. Geographical variations in high-risk Human Papilloma Virus incidence and type should be considered for vaccine improvement and screening in LMICs. METHODS: A descriptive, multi-center cross-sectional study with purposive sampling of cases with cervical cancer diagnosed from January 2012 through to December 2018 was employed relying on archived Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded (FFPE) tissues from four (4) Teaching Hospitals...

The early period of ontogeny is key to understanding the patterns of body plan formation in birds. Most studies of avian development have focused on the development of individual avian characters, leaving their developmental integration understudied. We explored the dynamics and integration of relative percentage increments in body mass, lengths of head, skeletal elements of wing and leg, and primary flight feathers in the embryonic and postnatal development of the Rook (Corvus frugilegus). The relative percentage increments were calculated according to Brody's equation...

BACKGROUND: Evidence exists that lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of dementia. However, the generalizability of this evidence to old patients from the general population remains uncertain. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to evaluate the effect of antihypertensive drug treatment on the risk of dementia in a heterogeneous group of new users of antihypertensive drugs. METHODS: A nested case-control study was carried out by including the cohort of 215,547 patients from Lombardy, Italy, aged ≥65 years, who started taking antihypertensive drugs between 2009 and 2012...

BACKGROUND/AIM: A three-dimensional network constructed using glycocalyx (GCX) extends throughout the cancer cell nest in human colorectal cancer (CRC). GCX was found to be closely related to cancer. We examined the prognostic correlation and potential of syndecan-1 (SDC1), a representative proteoglycan of GCX, as a biomarker. Ecosystems that offer carbon sequestration by leaching bicarbonate to groundwater are valuable natural capital. One region that may offer this service is the west coast of South Africa. Over 20 % is covered by soil mounds ("heuweltjies") up to 40 m diameter, 2 m high, inhabited by the southern harvester termite Microhodotermes viator and enriched in soil organic and inorganic carbon and soluble minerals. We aimed to generate radiogenic and stable isotope data for soils and groundwater in a region where these data are absent, to 1) verify the atmosphere-soil-groundwater link, and 2) resolve the timing and pattern of calcite dissolution and water infiltration in the landscape...

Malaria remains a significant global public health concern, with a recent increase in the number of zoonotic malaria cases in Southeast Asian countries. However, limited reports on the vector for zoonotic malaria exist owing to difficulties in detecting parasite DNA in Anopheles mosquito vectors. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time that several Anopheles mosquitoes contain simian malaria parasite DNA using droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), a highly sensitive PCR method. An entomological survey was conducted to identify simian malaria vector species at Phra Phothisat Temple (PPT), central Thailand, recognized for a high prevalence of simian malaria in wild cynomolgus macaques...

Considering the magnetic shielding requirements of both geomagnetic field and 50 Hz power-line frequency in the complex working conditions of the power grid, an electromagnetic shielding system combining active and passive modes is proposed in this article. A three-dimensional Helmholtz coil with a magnetic shielding barrel nested inside is established by the COMSOL simulation tool, and the magnetic shielding efficiency of the system is analyzed. Comparing different materials, the simulation results indicate that permalloy alloy exhibits better shielding performance than pure iron and nickel materials...

The infant non-secretor histoblood group antigen phenotype is associated with reduced risk of symptomatic rotavirus diarrhea, one of the leading global causes of severe pediatric diarrheal disease and mortality. However, little is known regarding the role of secretor status in asymptomatic rotavirus infections. Chicken parvovirus (ChPV) infection can cause runting-stunting syndrome (RSS) in chickens. There is currently no commercially available vaccine for controlling ChPV, and ChPV infection in chickens is widespread globally. The rapid detection of ChPV is crucial for promptly capturing epidemiological data on ChPV. Two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), 1B12 and 2B2, against the ChPV NS1 protein were generated. A double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA) was developed for detecting ChPV based on the mAb 1B12 and an anti-chicken polyclonal antibody against the ChPV NS1 protein...

Carboacylation of an unsaturated bond represents a powerful transformation. However, only a few examples of carboacylation of alkyne have been reported through C-C bond scission and reconnection. Here, we report a method of carboacylation of an unactivated alkyne by utilizing nonstrained C-C bonds under gold(I) catalysis. The density functional theory computational and experimental studies reveal that the reaction proceeds through a C-to-C formal 1,3-acyl migration via a solvent cage-nested acylium cation.
