OBJECTIVE: Marjolin's Ulcer (MU) is a rare cutaneous neoplasm arising in cikatrical tissue. Due to its typical clinical presentation as a non-healing lesion in scar tissue, the diagnosis can be delayed and even overlooked. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present the case of an elderly woman who developed an ulcerated, exophytic lesion in a split thickness skin graft (STSG) on the lateral aspect of the left knee. Histology showed a radically excised highly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with keratine pearls and a component of basocellular carcinoma (BCC)...

Targetoid hemosiderotic hemangioma (THH) or hobnail hemangioma (HH) is a benign vascular lesion that presents with the classical clinical presentation of a ring-shaped tumor having a targetoid appearance, with a central purple-brown papule surrounded by a thin pale area and an ecchymotic ring on the outside. Dermoscopic features and patterns of HH have been documented and have proven to be sufficient to establish a clinical diagnosis in many cases. We present a facial lesion in which both the clinical presentation and dermoscopy were atypical...

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune blistering skin disease with increasing incidence. BP is associated with neurological disorders, but it has not been established, what subtypes of dementia and stroke are associated with BP, and what is the temporal relation between these diseases. Also, the association between BP and psychiatric disorders is controversial. We conducted a retrospective nationwide study, using the Finnish Care Register for Health Care diagnoses between 1987 and 2013. The study population of 4524 BP patients were compared with 66138 patients with basocellular carcinoma (BCC), neurological and psychiatric comorbid disorders were evaluated for both groups, and associations were estimated by Cox regression and logistic regression analyses...

BACKGROUND: The role of radiolabeled choline (Cho) in patients with biochemical recurrence after radical treatment for prostate cancer (PCa) is well established. Its widespread clinical use has prompted the depiction of incidentalomas, unusual sites of metastatic lesions, as well as false positive and negative cases. We reported a series of patients affected by biochemical recurrence of PCa imaged by [(18)F]Cho positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) which resulted suspected for a second malignancy...

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients have a 25% increased risk of secondary primary neoplasms (SPNs). Regarding the controversy about the increased risk of SPN in patients exposed to radioimmunotherapy (RIT), we have analyzed this issue in a cohort of follicular lymphoma (FL) patients treated with/without RIT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study including all consecutive FL patients diagnosed since 2001 was performed. Demographic, clinical data including the incidence of any kind of neoplasm (excluding basocellular skin carcinoma) were recorded...

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare but very aggressive skin cancer that derives from neuroendocrine cells of the skin. Merkel cell carcinoma morbidity has been continuously increasing for the last few years. Increasing reported incidence of MCC is probably connected with increasing occurrence of this kind of malignancy or with development of histological and immunohistochemical methods of sample examinations which have allowed for more precise diagnosis of skin tumor that might have previously not been accurately recognized...

BACKGROUND: Nasal tip is one of the most frequent areas affected by basocellular carcinoma. The treatment must avoid any postsurgical deformity, as the nasal tip is the main part of the facial triangle. Most of these patients are elderly and polymorbid. The surgeon must find a compromise between the cosmetic effect and an acceptable stress for the patient. METHODS: There were five methods of nasal tip reconstruction used on a group of fifty elderly patients with various medical comorbidities: skin graft, bilobed flap, dorsal nasal flap, forehead flap and interpolation nasolabial flap...

Squamous cell and basocellular carcinoma of the face have an excellent prognosis. Nevertherless, a small proportion therefore of these cancers differs by a much more aggressive behavior, caracterised by a tendency to infiltrate the deep facial soft tissues and facial bones. The invasion of the craniofacial skeleton and the intracranial structures follows the embryonic fusion lines or the facial sensitive or motor nerves, sometimes years after the initial treatment. The development of craniofacial surgery, reconstruction techniques and conformational radiotherapy allows us now to offer curative guided treatments, for these advanced staged tumors with a remaining limited prognosis...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Merkel cell carcinoma was first described by Toker in 1972. It is an uncommon, primary neuroendocrine skin carcinoma which appears in the dermoepidermic area, grows fast, is very aggressive and has a poor prognosis. The aim of this work is to highlight the importance of this tumour, which develops mainly in the skin of the head and neck area, and whose prevalence has increased in recent years. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We gathered data on 16 patients suffering cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma treated at our hospital between September 12, 1991 and July 13, 2012...

The layers of the auricle from front to back were addressed, respectively, as follows: anterior skin, anterior perichondrium, cartilage, posterior perichondrium, and posterior skin. Thus, if a tumor on the auricle was holding 4 of these 5 layers and not holding the anterior or posterior skin, whether it was marginally located or stabilized in the mid parts, without having to apply complete resection, the intact parts were preserved, and the defect area was repaired with full-thickness skin graft. I practiced this method on a total of 17 patients, and histopathologic analysis showed that 13 of the patients had squamous cell carcinoma, 2 had Bowen disease, 1 had basocellular carcinoma, and 1 had granulomatous chondritis...

In cutaneous oncology, the year 2012 was marked by the consolidation of earlier results as well as the emergence of new therapeutic perspectives. The consolidated results most notably concern the use of MAP-kinase inhibitors (anti-MEK, anti-BRAF) in the treatment of patients with metastatic melanoma. Vismodegib (an SMO inhibitor), used in the treatment of multiple basocellular carcinomas that are inoperable or that have developed in patients suffering from Gorlin syndrome, has been the subject of publication of large-scale studies...

The lower eyelid is the most common site of tumors of the orbital region, usually of basocellular skin carcinoma, whose incidence is increasing with population aging in Western countries. The treatment must achieve the complete removal of the neoplasm in order to prevent recurrences, thus requiring eyelid and periocular reconstruction. Several techniques are described for eyelid defect reconstruction, aiming for direct suture eased by flaps, or considering the use of grafts. We report our experience with 22 patients operated on for basocellular carcinoma of the lower eyelid, for wich defects were repaired by means of a full-thickness reconstruction using a canthotomy and lateral cantholisis; in 13 patients the canthotomy was combined with a lateral-canthal flap...

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome is a rare autosomal-dominant syndrome related to mutation in "Patched" tumour suppressor gene on chromosome 9. Basocellular carcinomas, odontogenic keratocysts, palmar and/or plantar pits and ectopic calcifications of the falx cerebri are its major features, along with more than 100 minor features. Odontogenic cysts, notorious for recurrence, can make endotracheal intubation difficult, requiring modification of the standard intubation technique. We report such a case managed successfully by awake fibreoptic intubation...
