Worldwide research groups are searching for anticancer compounds, many of them are organometalic complexes having platinum group metals as their active centers. Most commonly used cytostatics from this group are cisplatin, carboplatin and oxaliplatin. Cisplatin was used fot the first time in 1978, from this time many platinum derivatives were created. In this review we present biological properties and probable future clinical use of platinum, gold, silver, iridium and ruthenium derivatives. Gold derivative Auranofin has been studied extensively...

Endoesophageal brachytherapy is a useful technique for the palliative treatment of dysphagia in advanced oesophageal cancer. This technique offers good results on dysphagia control and quality of life.We report the case of a patient treated with this technique presenting complete response to the dysphagia. We describe endoesophageal brachyterapy technique and we comment on the literature.

AIM: Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a rare neoplastic pathology involving the vulva, scrotum, and perianal areas, and it is characterized by a slow and insidious course. EMPD may also be associated with internal malignancy, and its clinical presentation features long-standing pruritic lesions, eczema-like, refractory to any therapy. The pathogenesis is unclear, and univocal standardization of treatment is yet to be determined. As regard to the patients who suffer from it, women are more often affected than men...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to estimate acute and late complications of radiation therapy in primary invasive vaginal carcinoma (PIVC) patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The analysis was performed for the group of 152 PIVC patients given radical radiotherapy in the Krakow Branch of Centre of Oncology during the 1967-2005 period. Twenty five (16.5%) patients in I stage with primary tumour of the thickness not larger than 0.5 cm were treated with intracavitary brachytherapy alone, for 120 (78...

UNLABELLED: Renal Angiography and IntraVascular UltraSonography (IVUS), are valuable diagnosis methods for assessment of renovascular hypertension (RVH). Endovascular techniques employing percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) are effective for therapy of ischaemic nephropathy in patients with RVH. Success of PTRA is limited by a significant rate of restenosis. THE AIM OF STUDY was to compare the assessment of residual stenosis and restenosis with angiography and IVUS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Residual stenosis after PTRA (combine with intravascular brachyterapy in 33 patients--group I) were assessed in 62 RVH patients with angiography and IVUS techniques...

BACKGROUND: Endometrial carcinoma is the most common malignancy of the female genital tract and its incidence is increasing. However, treatment results have not improved during the last decades. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our regional quality register was used to evaluate treatment results for the period between January 1995 and December 2003. This study includes 2211 consecutive patients, of which 1993 surgically staged patients were evaluated in detail. Of these, 831 (53%) were at low risk and were given no further treatment after primary surgery...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Considering the high frequency of localized prostate cancer in stages, at the moment there are minimally invasive techniques that compete with the classic surgery. One of them is the Low Dose Rate (LDR) Brachytherapy with permanent implants of 1125 seeds. The objective of the present study is to expose our experience from the year 1998, when we made the first treatment, until today. The results and the morbidity of the patients over a 7 and a half years period are analyzed...

INTRODUCTION: The prostate brachytherapy with I 125 seeds has an indication in patients with organconfined prostate cancer. Our objective is to describe the population treated in our institution with permanent I125 seeds implants, the dosimetric characteristics of the technique and the preliminary results of our group-study in terms of evolution and toxicity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between May 2000 and March 2003, 130 patients with permanent implants of I125 seeds were treated...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Brachyterapy in the management of intraocular tumors was introduced in the Department of Ophthalmology in Cracow in the late sixties, soon after it was applied by Stallard. For many years, similar to other oncological centers, we used 60Co and in 1994 we started with 106Ru and at the end of 1997 with 125J. The aim of this paper is to present our experiences with 106Ru and 125J brachytheray in posterior uveal melanoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our studies comprised 164 patients with choroidal melanoma, treated in the years 1995-1997 with 106Ru and 19 patients treated between December 1997 nad April 1998 with 125J plaque brachytherapy...

A study of the speed of tumor regression in 127 uveal melanomas treated with beta-rays brachyterapy, since June 1983, allows a division into 2 groups: radiosensitive forms with a volume less than 50% in the following year, and radioresistant forms. Correlation between radio sensitivity and tumor cell type were obtained with intraoperative cytopunction, and showed the prevalence of epithelioid type. The results of enucleation indicate the prevalence of fusiform type inside the radioresistant tumor group. No precise correlation could be brought between death and the previous data, the most important negative criteria being the level of initial tumor height equal or superior to 7 mm...
