BACKGROUND: Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of malignant thyroid tumors. The main diagnostic clue of PTC is the presence of its characteristic nuclear features. Yet, the focal presence of these features in other thyroid lesions causes a diagnostic dilemma. AIM: To evaluate Cytokeratin 19 (CK19) and CD56 immunostains as useful diagnostic markers in distinguishing papillary thyroid carcinoma from other mimicking thyroid lesions. METHODS: Eighty cases of different thyroid lesions were submitted for immunohistochemical staining of CK19 and CD56...

Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP-4) is a member of the BMP protein family. BMP-4 was reported to induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and promote tumor cell immigration and invasion. This study aimed to investigate the expression of BMP-4 in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and its correlation with the patients' clinicophathological features and with tumor invasion and metastasis. Surgically resected PTC specimens from 82 patients admitted to the Department of Thyroid Surgery of Yantai Yuhuangding Hospital between Feb 1st and May 31st, 2016 were collected...

INTRODUCTION: Solitary Thyroid Nodule (STN) has provoked increased concern owing to higher incidence of malignancy. The inter and intra observer variation in the histomorphological diagnosis of Papillary Thyroid Carcinomas (PTC) may sometimes pose a diagnostic difficulty. AIM: This study was undertaken to analyse immunohistochemical (IHC) markers (CK-19, CD-56, p53, Ki-67) to differentiate between benign and malignant surgically resected STN along with their utility in the identification of PTC...

Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is one of the endocrine cancers with high clinical and genetic heterogeneity. NOTCH signaling and its downstream NOTCH-Regulated Ankyrin Repeat Protein (NRARP) have been implicated in oncogenesis of many cancers, but the roles in PTCs are less studied. In this study, we show that NRARP is frequently over-expressed in thyroid carcinoma. The over-activation of NRARP is highly and positively correlated with NOTCH genes. Moreover, we find that the expression of NRARP is highly associated with several epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers and contributes to poor survival outcomes...

BACKGROUND: The incidences of both thyroid cancer and breast cancer have been rising in recent years; however, it is very rare to find a single person with both of these cancers. Only a few cases of synchronous thyroid and breast cancer have been published, and even fewer cases have been reported in older patients (>60 years). CASE SUMMARY: The current study presents a case of synchronous papillary thyroid carcinoma and breast ductal carcinoma in an elderly patient...

RATIONALE: The early detection of recurrent differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) cells in postsurgery DTC patients relies on the sensitivity of measuring both the level of thyroglobulin (Tg) and 131-iodine distribution on a whole-body scan (WBS). Recent studies have defined patients who subsequently have no evidence of disease as those who have a stimulated Tg level <1 ng/mL with no other radiological or clinical evidence of disease. PATIENT CONCERNS: A woman patient with solid variant papillary thyroid carcinoma (SVPTC) had undergone twice thyroidectomy with lymph node dissection and radioactive therapy...

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland (CAMSG) is a rare tumor of the head and neck. We report a case of a 70-year-old female who presented with a 4-5-month history of a left neck mass. CT scan of the neck showed a left neck mass just inferior to the angle of the mandible and left tonsillar prominence. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the neck mass showed epithelial groups with focal cribriform architecture. The cells had round to oval nuclei and fine chromatin. The background contained scattered lymphocytes...

PURPOSE: Several characteristics of lymph node metastasis (LNM) as predictors of the risk of recurrence or death were examined in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). The presence of cancerous nodules as a characteristic of LNMs in PTC has not yet been reported. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of the cancerous nodules in the lymph node (CNLN) to determine the risk of distant metastasis and survival in patients with PTC. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study enrolled 1408 patients with pathologically confirmed PTC without initial distant metastasis who underwent thyroidectomy and neck dissection...

: Thyroid cancer with cranial metastasis in a pregnant woman is very rare. In the literature, most cases are diagnosed early from neurogenic signs or symptomatic thyroid gland. Pregnancy also contributes to a hesitation toward early surgical and medical treatments. We reported a scalp tumor in a physically healthy 37-year-old pregnant female with a follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) with lung, bone and cranial metastasis in initial presentation. Silent neurogenic and physical examinations make an early diagnosis very challenging...

Unlike the well-documented relation between radiation to the neck and development of papillary thyroid carcinoma, a causal association between radioactive iodine treatment for Graves' disease and development of thyroid malignancy is less defined. However, patients with a background of thyroid dysfunction presenting with clinically palpable thyroid nodules are followed more closely than the average population, and fine needle aspiration is recommended in such circumstances. Cytological examination of aspirates, and histologic examination of tissue provided from patients with a known history of Graves' disease, managed by radioactive iodine therapy can create a diagnostic dilemma, as the distinction between radiation effect and a malignant primary thyroid neoplasm can be very challenging...

BACKGROUND: The noninvasive follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has an indolent clinical behavior in comparison with other PTCs, including the invasive follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (IFVPTC). Recently, the term noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) was introduced to emphasize the low biological potential of these tumors. This study compares clinical, cytological, and molecular features of NIFTP and IFVPTC...

Oncocytic variant of medullary thyroid carcinoma (OV-MTC) is a very unusual entity, up to date only 17 cases have been reported in the literature. MTC is a neuro-endocrine malignancy arising from the para-follicular C cells of the thyroid gland. It generally has a slight female predominance and appears as a single lesion. However in the Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome 2, linked to the point mutation of RET oncogene, multifocal MTCs may also occur. Herein, we report the case of a 75 years old man with a rare form of sporadic multifocal and bilateral OV-MTC expressing wild-type RET gene...

The diffuse follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (DFV-PTC) is a rare malignant thyroid condition. It represents an uncommon variant of papillary carcinoma characterized by a diffuse involvement of thyroid parenchyma, follicular architecture and nuclear features of PTC in absence of a surrounding capsule. Up to date few data have been collected about this entity and, at the best of our knowledge, only 24 cases have been reported in the literature. According to these reports DFV-PTC seems to occur preferentially in young women and shows more aggressive behavior than other papillary thyroid tumors...

BACKGROUND: The dysregulation of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) has been identified in a variety of cancers. An increasing number of studies have found the critical role of lncRNAs in the regulation of cellular processes, such as proliferation, invasion and differentiation. Long noncoding RNA papillary thyroid carcinoma susceptibility candidate 3 (PTCSC3) is a novel lncRNA that was primarily detected in papillary thyroid carcinoma. However, the biological function and molecular mechanism of lncRNA PTCSC3 in glioma are still unknown...
