The renal diet has traditionally been regarded as one of the most complex medical nutrition therapies to teach, understand, and implement. Specifically, patients are instructed to limit fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, dairy, and whole grains because of both phosphorus and potassium concerns. Furthermore, hemodialysis patients are often encouraged to decrease fluid intake to control interdialytic weight gain. These restrictions can result in frustration, lack of autonomy, and the perception that there is nothing left to eat...

Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) is an important gram-positive bacterium in dairy products. It is a rare cause of opportunistic infections with only four cases of Lactococcus peritoneal dialysis (PD) peritonitis reported in the literature. In Korea, L. lactis infection was first reported in a liver abscess patient in 2010; however, PD peritonitis with Lactococcus has not been reported in Korea. Recently, we experienced a case of Lactococcus-associated polymicrobial PD peritonitis. The patient was initially managed with broad-coverage antibiotics; however, owing to a poor response, the PD catheter was removed and the patient was switched to hemodialysis...

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hemodialysis (HD) duration on food intake and nutritional markers in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS: Twenty CKD patients received maintenance HD over a 9-year period. At the beginning of the study (T0) and at 3-year intervals (T1, T2, and T3) during the 9-year follow-up, a nutritional survey using the 24-h recall and record method was repeated for 4 days, and the blood samples were drawn...

It is important to consider that between Jul-October 2009 in the pathologic center of infectious diseases (Tbilisi State Medical University Department of Infectious Diseases) among hospitalized patients with hemorrhagic colitis 25 patients developed HUS syndrome. Most of patients were rural residents 20 (80%), only 5 (20%) were urban. 11 (44%) patients were children, 14 (56%) were adults. Male and female rate was equal. All the patients related the onset of the disease with the consumption of notwashed raw fruits or vegetables, nonpasteurized dairy products, food from street vendors, soft cheeses made from raw milk and untreated water in areas lacking adequate chlorination...

Conjugated diene fatty acids (CDFA) were evaluated by second derivative spectrophotometry in the plasma and adipose tissue of 42 chronic renal failure (CFR) patients in conservative treatment, 40 patients treated by hemodialysis (HD) with cuprophane, cellulose acetate or hemophan, 29 treated by hemodiafiltration (HDF) with polysulfone, polyacrylonitrile or polyamide, and 28 healthy controls. Plasma CDFA were also evaluated at the beginning, at 30 min and at the end of the dialytic session. CDFA were unchanged in CRF patients with creatinine clearance (Ccr) > 10 ml/min respect to the controls, CRF patients with Ccr < 10 ml/min showed a higher level of CDFA both in plasma and adipose tissue (p < 0...

We performed oral fat loading tests in 10 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) on hemodialysis (5 children and 5 adults). Fat absorption was measured by hourly determination of serum triglycerides (TG), cholesterol (CHOL), and lipoproteins (LP) after oral administration of a 'milkshake' containing 50 g of fat of dairy origin. 10 age-matched healthy volunteers with normal fasting serum TG levels and 10 subjects with fasting hypertriglyceridemia served as controls. Mean fasting serum TG levels in CRF patients were elevated compared to normal controls (177...
