Melioidosis has a highly variable presentation. Almost any organ can be involved, although an antemortem diagnosis of acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) has not, to our knowledge, been previously described. A 68-year-old Australian male with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus presented with fever, odynophagia, and thyroid function tests consistent with hyperthyroidism. Imaging demonstrated a lung abscess and an enlarged thyroid gland with three nodules. Blood cultures and fine-needle aspiration of the thyroid nodules grew Burkholderia pseudomallei...

INTRODUCTION: Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening condition. The majority of AST cases are caused by bacterial infection. Streptococcu s suis is a swine pathogen that mostly causes meningitis and septicemia. To date, AST caused by Streptococcu s suis has not yet been reported. CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old Thai female presented with rapid enlargement of a preexisting large left thyroid nodule without compressive symptoms for one week...

BACKGROUND: Third and fourth branchial anomalies are rare, accounting for less than 10% of all branchial anomalies. The piriform fossa sinus tract (PFST) typically presents with left-side suppurative thyroiditis, although it can present earlier in neonates as a non-inflamed cystic neck mass. PFST poses a considerable diagnostic challenge with variable clinical and imaging features, leading to long delays to definitive diagnosis and appropriate management. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the patterns of presentation and imaging findings in children with PFST, with a particular focus on neonatal presentation...

Infections of the thyroid gland are rare. Its innate resistance to infections can be attributed to its unique anatomical features and rich blood supply. High clinical suspicion is required as a delay in diagnosis can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Major pathogens include the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species; however, Gram-negative organisms have been found especially in immunocompromised hosts. We present a rare case of acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) secondary to Escherichia coli ( E...

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a rare but potentially life-threatening thyroid disease with a high mortality if left untreated. Thus, differentiation from other thyroid disorders is highly important in clinical practice. A 22-year-old male patient was admitted to a tertiary care hospital with cervical pain, palpitations, thyrotoxicosis, and an inhomogeneously enlarged right thyroid lobe. In view of the clinical findings, subacute thyroiditis (SAT) was suspected and treatment with glucocorticoids was started...

Acute suppurative thyroiditis is an infectious disease, uncommon in children, caused by various microorganisms, being bacteria the most frequently involved. The typical presentation includes the appearance of a tumor in combination with signs of swelling in the anterior aspect of the neck, which is painful on palpation and is associated with warmth and erythema. It usually moves with swallowing and the patient can suffer fever, dysphagia or dhysfonia. In children, congenital anomalies can lead to the gland's infection, and the surgical excision of them is important to prevent recurrency...

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a self-limiting, painful, non-suppurative thyroid gland inflammation, which usually develops two to eight weeks after viral upper respiratory tract infections, accompanied by pain and fever. The thyroid gland is large, painful, and tender. It presents with fever, myalgia, arthralgia, weakness, and sore throat. A 37-year-old male presented to medical ward with a history of fever for three weeks along with swelling of neck and difficulty in swallowing. The patient had features of hyperthyroidism...

BACKGROUND: Acute suppurative thyroiditis through the congenital pyriform sinus fistula (PSF) often recurs if the fistula is not resected. Although endoscopic chemo-cauterization (ECC) to obliterate the orifice of the fistula is less invasive than open fistulectomy, it may require repeated treatments. We recently adopted an endoscopic diode laser-cauterization (ELC) system with the intention of improving treatment outcomes in PSF. Here, we describe ELC and compare the outcomes of these three modalities...

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a rare infection of the thyroid gland, and most patients are euthyroid upon presentation. We present an interesting case of a 42-year-old man with a history of intravenous drug use (IVDU) and poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus who was admitted for sepsis and thyrotoxicosis from infective endocarditis (IE), AST, prostate abscess, and pyelonephritis. He suffered from a cerebral vascular accident (CVA) from septic embolic showering. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) was <0...

Pyriform sinus fistula is uncommon and easily misdiagnosed. Most reported cases occur in children and are associated with either acute suppurative thyroiditis or deep neck infection. Asymptomatic pyriform sinus fistula is difficult to diagnose because it can manifest as an incidental thyroid nodule with highly suspicious malignant features on ultrasonography. The patient was a 41-year-old man with asymptomatic thyroid nodules incidentally detected on ultrasonography. Surgery was performed under the suspicion of thyroid cancer...

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is serious and rare infection of the thyroid gland, often it can progress to thyroid abscess. Both anatomical defects and underlying thyroid disorders are attributed to etiopathogenesis of the disease. Bacteria usually reach the gland either by lymphatic spread or via hematogenous routes. If untreated it has fatal outcome and had serious complications. The mainstay of treatment is usually a combination of intravenous antibiotics and drainage, and sometimes surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a rare but potentially fatal condition which can initially be difficult to distinguish from the more common subacute thyroiditis (SAT). We aim to update understanding of this medical emergency. DESIGN: A systematic review over the past 20 years was performed on the epidemiology, clinical features, investigations, management and outcomes of AST. All full-text cases of microscopy or culture- proven AST in the English literature were included...

Acute suppurative thyroiditis account for <1% of thyroid diseases and is uncommon because of the gland's encapsulation, iodine-rich environment, good vascular supply and extensive lymphatic drainage. It has been reported in patients with underlying goiters, thyroid cancers and in immuno-compromised patients. The usual causative organisms are Staphylococci spp. and Streptococci spp . Rarer organisms include Klebsiella spp . and Salmonella spp . Due to its rarity (as there have been only 28 cases of Salmonella thyroid abscess being reported in the literature till 2020), only case reports are available to guide management...

Among the types of acute thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is rare in children, and there is limited knowledge regarding its characteristics in pediatric cases. We present a case of SAT in a 6-yr-old boy who was brought to our hospital with high fever and pain in the front portion of the neck. Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST), which is common in children, was suspected initially. Tenderness observed in the thyroid corresponded to a hypoechoic region on ultrasonography. The tenderness subsequently shifted to the isthmus, which was evident as a hypoechoic region on ultrasonography...

SUMMARY: In elderly patients presenting with a solid thyroid mass, the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant lesion is not always straightforward. We present the case of an 85-year-old woman with fever and an enlarged, firm and painful thyroid mass. Blood exams documented a mild thyrotoxicosis with a moderate inflammatory status. Thyroid scintiscan showed an absent uptake of 131I. Ultrasound and CT scan documented a 3 cm hypoechoic nodule with infiltration of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, very suspicious for neoplastic nature...
