Cystic echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by the Echinococcus tapeworm. The disease can often affect organs such as the liver and lungs, muscles, bones, kidneys, brain, and spleen. Spinal cystic echinococcosis has been reported very rarely in the literature. In this report; we present a pediatric case with spinal cystic echinococcosis, who was diagnosed with multiple cystic echinococcosis in the liver and lungs and was admitted with complaints of difficulty in walking and leg pain 1 year after the albendazole treatment, which he had been taking for 3...

We report a 44-years-old woman with cystic echinococcosis (CE) who presented with simultaneous involvement of liver and vastus lateralis muscle to Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa, Istanbul, Turkey in 2020. Although she underwent surgery for the liver, the intramuscular mass was ignored. While the patient was under post-operative albendazole treatment, she was investigated for the mass on her right thigh which was excised later. The comparison of magnetic resonance imaging before and after albendazole treatment showed that albendazole eliminated the intramuscular vesicle structures by accelerating the degeneration process of the cyst...

Immune cells are pivotal players in the immune responses against both parasitic infection and malignancies. Substantial evidence demonstrated that there may exist possible relationship between echinococcus granulus sensu lato (E. granulosus s.l.) infection and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. Thus, this study aimed to observe crucial roles of immune cells in the formation of subcutaneous lesions after transplanting HepG2 cell lines with or without E. granulosus s.l. protoscoleces (PSCs). HepG2 cell lines were subcutaneously injected into nude mice in the control group...

This review aims at identifying cestodes that are present in hunted rodent species in the neo-tropical region. The rodent species that was investigated were the capybara ( Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris , Linnaeus, 1766), lappe ( Cuniculus paca , Linnaeus, 1766), agouti ( Dasyprocta leporina , Linnaeus, 1758), chinchilla ( Chinchilla chinchilla , Lichtenstein, 1829), Trinidad spiny rat ( Proehimys trinitatus , Allen and Chapman, 1893), nutria ( Myocastor coypus , Molina, 1782), and vizcacha ( Lagostomus maximus , Desmarest, 1817)...

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is a wild canid new to Switzerland. It is an officially monitored species and all deceased individuals are submitted for post-mortem examination to collect baseline health data. This includes parasitological examinations, with an emphasis on zoonotic, reportable infections, such as those caused by Trichinella spp. or Echinococcus spp. From 2016 to 2021, five golden jackals originating from four Swiss cantons were submitted for full post-mortem examination. In one case only organ samples were available, and therefore parasitological examination was not possible...

BACKGROUND: Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of human hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE). AE can cause damage to several organs, primarily the liver, and have severe outcomes, such as hepatic failure and encephalopathy. The main purpose of this study was to explore the interactions between hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and E. multilocularis protoscoleces (PSCs). The results of this study provide an experimental basis for further examination of the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis due to AE infection...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Most of the time, intramuscular hydatid cysts are secondary. The unusual topographies are a source of diagnostic delay and treatment difficulties. The aim of our case report is to put forward the features of this uncommon presentation and to propose a therapeutic management. Raccoon dogs have successfully invaded Europe, including Denmark. Raccoon dogs are potential vectors and reservoir hosts of several zoonotic pathogens and thus have the potential for posing a threat to both human and animal health. This study includes analysis of four zoonotic parasites, 16 tick-borne pathogens and two pathogen groups from 292 raccoon dogs collected from January 2018 to December 2018. The raccoon dogs were received as a part of the Danish national wildlife surveillance program and were hunted, found dead or road killed...

Pelvic hydatid bone disease is a rare and debilitating condition. Patients often present with symptoms and signs when the disease process is advanced and curative resection is not possible. We present a case of destructive bone hydatid disease affecting the left iliac bone. A 45-year-old woman presented initially 5 years ago with a left pelvic mass to the gynaecology department. Computed tomography (CT) scan done at that time showed a large pelvic, left iliac fossa cystic mass with the destruction of the left iliac bone...

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease is an endemic disease in many countries of the world including the Middle East. It mainly affects the liver and lungs. Intramuscular hydatid disease is rarely reported in children. Such uncommon localization of hydatid cyst may pose difficulties in the clinical and radiological diagnosis; hence affecting patient's management and outcome even in endemic areas. CASE PRESENTATION: We herein describe intramuscular hydatid cysts in 2 different children...

Hydatid cysts are rarely detected in the muscle tissue, even in endemic countries. Echinococcus granulosis is the most common causative agent, whereas Echinococcus alveolaris is rare. Three patients, two females and one male, with primary echinococcosis of the skeletal muscles are described in this report. Mean patient age was 33.3 ± 14.6 years. The disease occurred as soft tissue masses in all three patients, and no hydatid foci were detected elsewhere in the patients. Skeletal muscle echinococcosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of limb masses, especially in endemic countries...

Alveolar echinococcus (AE) is a severe health problem in endemic areas. In recent years, the incidence of this disease in China has been increasing. The study was designed to illustrate the multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of extrahepatic AE. A cohort of 33 patients who suffered from extrahepatic AE was enrolled consecutively from January 2012 to December 2017. The MSCT and MRI features of extrahepatic AE were recorded and analyzed by experienced radiologists...

Urbanisation and invasion of wildlife into urban areas as well as human leisure activities create diverse wildlife-domestic animal-human interfaces, increasing the risk of (zoonotic) parasite spillover from sylvatic to domestic and synanthropic cycles. This study investigated the endo- and ectoparasite fauna, emphasising on parasites of One Health Concern, of the most common predators in northern Germany between November 2013 and January 2016. Hydatid cyst is a common infestation caused by helminths in humans and usually involves the liver and lungs. Primarily, cases of hydatid cysts in the thigh muscles are extremely rare and are generally in the form of case reports. It is an important disease due to its insidious course, its confusion with other soft tissue pathologies, delay in diagnosis and painstaking surgery. In our study, the largest case series in the literature, the clinical stages of the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of 9 hydatid cysts that develop primarily in the thigh muscles were evaluated...
