BACKGROUND: Spinal aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare, histologically benign tumors with aggressive behavior, which may cause bone and soft-tissue destruction, particularly affecting neural elements. Management of these tumors, including treatment modalities and follow-up protocols, remains challenging. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 7-year-old boy presented with chest wall pain persisting for two months before admission, accompanied by progressive mono paresis lasting ten days before admission...

BACKGROUND: Traumatic aneurysms are a rare sequela of nonaccidental head trauma in infants. The rate of nonaccidental trauma (NAT) in the pediatric population is increasing; therefore, traumatic aneurysms are an important consideration in the evaluation of pediatric patients with abusive head trauma. OBSERVATIONS: A 24-day-old infant with no significant past medical or birth history presented with twitching and poor oral intake for 1 day. The patient was found to have bilateral subdural hematomas, multifocal contusions, and traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage...

Background: Excellent outcomes of right ventricle to pulmonary artery conduits with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) valves have been reported. The purpose of this study was to analyze the short-term results of our handmade PTFE bicuspid valved conduit (VC) for right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction. Methods: Between September 2019 and May 2023, bicuspid PTFE-VC was implanted in 17 patients at a median age of 2.5 years (range, 3 months to 13.6 years). The PTFE-VC was fashioned from a commercially available PTFE tube graft (14 mm in three patients, 16 mm in three patients, 18 mm in one patient, 20 mm in three patients, and 22 mm in seven patients) and 0...

The purpose of this review is to increase awareness about the evolution and development of current trends in the diagnosis and treatment of aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs). ABCs are benign, but locally aggressive bone tumors that mainly affect children. ABCs comprise 1% of all primary bone tumors and occur most frequently during the first two decades of life. The diagnosis is made using a variety of imaging modalities and has the characteristic features of an expansile, radiolucent lesion that is often seen in the metaphyseal region of the bone and has fluid-fluid levels that are apparent on MRI...

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis that affects young children and can result in coronary artery aneurysms. The etiology is currently unknown, but new clues from the epidemiology of KD in Japan, the country of highest incidence, are beginning to shed light on what may trigger this acute inflammatory condition. Additional clues from the global changes in KD incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with a new birth cohort study from Japan, point to the potential role of person-to-person transmission of an infectious agent...

Intracranial aneurysms are uncommon in the pediatric population. We present a case of a 11-year-old boy presenting with subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by a "donut-shaped" basilar tip aneurysm. It occurs when the flow geometry produces a circumferential laminar flow into the aneurysmal sac, resulting in a central thrombosis. Optimal management of this type of aneurysm is not already clear, and further studies are needed to clarify the best treatment approach, especially in the pediatric population.

PURPOSE: Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is a multisystem autosomal dominant disorder with highly variable expression. Intracranial arterial and venous anomalies have a reported prevalence of 30-40% and can increase the risk of stroke by 16%. Few reports document the frequency and evolution of cerebrovascular abnormalities (CVAs) in children with ALGS. We aimed to define the spectrum, frequency, and evolution of CVAs in a series of children with ALGS using magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)...

BACKGROUND: Japanese Kawasaki disease (KD) risk scores cannot be adopted in non-Japanese patients. In North American populations a baseline coronary artery Z-score > 2 and the Son score are associated with coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs) at 4 and 8 weeks from disease onset. In European populations, the Kawanet and Kawanet-echo scores are associated with intravenous immunoglobulin resistance. This study aims to evaluate the association between KD risk scores and baseline coronary artery Z-scores with CAAs at one, two, and six months in a European population...

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is an uncommon, benign, vascular multicystic bony lesion that most frequently develops in the first two decades of life. The metaphysis of long bones, pelvic, and vertebral column are the most common locations. The precise underlying pathophysiology of ABCs formation remains unclear; however, it is believed that reactive processes subsequent to trauma or vascular disturbance may play an important role. Involvement of the skull base rarely occurs with a prevalence of up to 5% of intracranial ABCs...

There has been an exponential increase in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on cerebrovascular disease within neurosurgery. The goal of this study was to review, outline the scope, and summarize all phase 2b and phase 3 RCTs impacting cerebrovascular neurosurgery practice since 2018. We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases for relevant RCTs published between January 1, 2018, and July 1, 2022. We searched for studies related to eight major cerebrovascular disorders relevant to neurosurgery, including acute ischemic stroke, cerebral aneurysms and subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, subdural hematomas, cerebral venous thrombosis, arteriovenous malformations, Moyamoya disease and extracranial-intracranial bypass, and carotid and intracranial atherosclerosis...
