There has been increasing attention given to nickel-cobalt tailings (NCT), which pose a risk of heavy metal pollution in the field. In this study, on site tests and sampling analysis were conducted to assess the physical and chemical characteristics, heavy metal toxicity, and microbial diversity of the original NCT, solidified NCT, and the surrounding soil. The research results show that the potential heavy metal pollution species in NCT are mainly Ni, Co, Mn, and Cu. Simultaneous solidification and passivation of heavy metals in NCT were achieved, resulting in a reduction in biological toxicity and a fivefold increase in seed germination rate...

Inert waste landfills are strictly limited to inert or non-reactive waste materials, nevertheless, due to human negligence or unavoidable circumstances, sometimes, small amounts of biodegradable or chemically reactive waste are mixed and disposed together with the inert waste. Over time, leachate generated from these biodegradable wastes may come into contact with rainfall water and percolate into groundwater and surrounding ground, degrading water quality. Additionally, the large sized industrial plastics present inside the inert waste landfill may trap and store the leachate thus enhancing the risk of contamination due to increased contact time and reducing the mechanical stability of the landfill...

The Cikijing River is one of the rivers of the Citarik River Basin, which empties into the Citarum River and crosses Bandung Regency and Sumedang Regency, Indonesia. One of the uses of the Cikijing River is as a source of irrigation for rice fields in the Rancaekek area, but the current condition of the water quality of the Cikijing river has decreased, mainly due to the disposal of wastewater from the Rancaekek industrial area which is dominated by industry in the textile and textile products sector. This study aims to determine the potential ecological risks and water quality of the Cikijing River based on the content of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn)...

The development of a new generation of anticorrosion pigments for paints remains an important challenge to replace the usual sparingly-soluble pigments and thus avoid the dissemination of heavy metals in the environment and the formation of holes in polymer coatings. For this purpose, α-zirconium hydrogenophosphate (Zr(HPO4 )2 ·H2 O, denoted as α-ZrP) was intercalated with the corrosion inhibitor 2-aminobenzimidazole (ABIM). Various microstructural analyses have proven the insertion of ABIM in the interlayer space by an acid-base exchange reaction and allowed us to propose a structural model for the new ABIM-ZrP pigment...

Vegetable cultivation under sewage irrigation is a common practice mostly in developing countries due to a lack of freshwater. Long-term usage provokes heavy metals accumulation in soil and ultimately hinders the growth and physiology of crop plants and deteriorates the quality of food. A study was performed to investigate the role of brassinosteroid (BRs) and silicon (Si) on lettuce, spinach, and cabbage under lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) contaminated sewage water. The experiment comprises three treatments (control, BRs, and Si) applied under a completely randomized design (CRD) in a growth chamber...

Fatty acids and essential oils (EOs) are the primary variables that influence the quality of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.). Soil toxicity to cadmium (Cd) is the main environmental issue facing fennel, and priming methods like soil amendments and nanoparticles (NPs) are commonly utilized to deal with it. The goal of the current study was to examine the effects of biochar (BC) and selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) on fennel plants in Cd-contaminated soils. The pot experiment was conducted with Cd stress at 0, 10, and 20 mg kg-1 soil, BC at 5% (v/v), and foliar-spraying Se NPs at 40 mg L-1 as a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) at a greenhouse condition in 2022...

Nanostructured activated carbon (AC) adsorbents derived from woody biomass have garnered attention for their potential usage to remove toxic substances from the environment due to their high specific surface area, superior micro/mesoporosity, and tunable surface chemistry profile. However, chemical dopants widely used to enhance the chemical reactivity with heavy metals would pollute the environment and conflict with the vision of a cleaner and sustainable environment. Herein, we report a facile, green, and sustainable approach using fungi modification combined with alkali activation to produce AC for heavy metal removal...
