The effectiveness of antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) in significantly reducing respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) depends crucially on the timing. It is successful if delivery takes place between 24 hours and seven days following administration; after this period, the side effects seem to predominate. In addition, an increased rate of mental impairment and behavioral disorders are observed in children born full-term after ACS administration. The optimal timing of ACS administration depends crucially on the given indication; to date, it has been achieved in only 25-40% of cases...

Adoption of high-content omic technologies in clinical studies, coupled with computational methods, has yielded an abundance of candidate biomarkers. However, translating such findings into bona fide clinical biomarkers remains challenging. To facilitate this process, we introduce Stabl, a general machine learning method that identifies a sparse, reliable set of biomarkers by integrating noise injection and a data-driven signal-to-noise threshold into multivariable predictive modeling. Evaluation of Stabl on synthetic datasets and five independent clinical studies demonstrates improved biomarker sparsity and reliability compared to commonly used sparsity-promoting regularization methods while maintaining predictive performance; it distills datasets containing 1,400-35,000 features down to 4-34 candidate biomarkers...

Cerebral palsy (CP) has been recognized as a group of neurologic disorders with varying etiologies and ontogenies. While a percentage of CP cases arises during labor, the expanded use of electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) to include prevention of CP has resulted in decades of vastly increased interventions that have not significantly reduced the incidence of CP for infants born at term in the USA. Litigation alleging that poor obstetrical practice caused CP in most of these affected children has led to contentious arguments regarding the actual etiologies of this condition and often resulted in substantial monetary awards for plaintiffs...

BACKGROUND: Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is a collective term for pre-cancerous lesions associated with cervical invasive carcinoma. Treatment options depend on the development and progression of the disease. Especially for patients with CINII grade who are aged 25 years and older and have fertility requirements, it is a clinical challenge to determine whether to proceed with conservative or excisional treatment. Excisional treatment increases the risk of overtreatment outcomes, such as cervical insufficiency, preterm labor, miscarriage, and premature rupture of membranes, in young women with childbearing potential...

Birth trauma is described as organ or tissue damage caused by physical pressure during birth. Birth trauma ranges from minor problems that go away on their own to significant wounds that might result in infant morbidity and mortality over the long term. It is one of the critical issues that have received the least attention globally. In Ethiopia, evidence regarding the pooled prevalence of birth trauma among neonates is scarce. Therefore, this study estimated the pooled prevalence of birth trauma and associated factors in Ethiopia over the last decade...

Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells with the potential to differentiate into various cell types, including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes. These cells have been extensively employed in the field of cell-based therapies and regenerative medicine due to their inherent attributes of self-renewal and multipotency. Traditional approaches for assessing hMSCs differentiation capacity have relied heavily on labor-intensive techniques, such as RT-PCR, immunostaining, and Western blot, to identify specific biomarkers...

Many women with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) types II, III, and IV reach fertile age, and some of them may consider pregnancy. However, limited data are available about the potential effects of pregnancy on the course of SMA and the outcomes of pregnancies in these patients. Furthermore, the use of several disease-modifying therapies for the treatment of all types of SMA is expected to increase the number of female SMA patients considering pregnancy in the coming years. The aim of this report is to provide clinicians with an overview of the patients in our cohort who have experienced pregnancies...

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of infant mortality and follows multiple biological pathways, many of which are poorly understood. Some PTBs result from medically indicated labor following complications from hypertension and/or diabetes, while many others are spontaneous with unknown causes. Previously, investigation of potential risk factors has been limited by lack of data on maternal medical history and the difficulty of classifying PTBs as indicated or spontaneous...

BACKGROUND: Obesity in pregnancy is associated with a myriad of well-documented complications. However, the outcomes of pregnancy in overweight females, who are not classified as obese, have not been studied. The aim of the study was to assess foeto-maternal outcomes in primigravida who are overweight and compare them to normal-weight patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective observational cohort study and included primigravida with full-term gestation (between 38 and 42 weeks), with a single live foetus in vertex presentation, who were admitted for labour induction...

Intrapartum ultrasonography serves as a valuable tool for the objective evaluation of labor progression and effectively identifies underlying factors, such as asynclitism, in cases of abnormal labor progression. Among the various ultrasound measurement techniques, the angle of progression (AOP) demonstrates favorable reproducibility and accuracy in assessing fetal head descent. In the context of abnormal labor, interventions differ across different stages of labor, emphasizing the importance of investigating the utility of AOP according to labor stages in this review article...

UNLABELLED: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a pathological condition in which the placenta releases a hormone called human placental lactogen that prevents maternal insulin uptake. GDM is characterised by varying degrees of carbohydrate intolerance and is first identified during pregnancy. Around 5-17% of pregnancies are GDM pregnancies. Older or obese women have a higher risk of developing GDM during gestation. Hyperglycemia is a classic manifestation of GDM and leads to alterations in eNOS and iNOS expression and subsequently causes ROS and RNS overproduction...

BACKGROUND: Birth is a significant event in women's lives. As Mansfield notes (2008) many women aim for a birth that avoids pharmacological pain relief because they are advised it is better for them and their baby. For women having their first baby, this may not be realistic as 3/4 of primiparous women in Australia will use pharmacological pain relief. This study examines the expectations that a group of women had regarding pain relief, how these expectations developed and what happened to requests for pain relief in labour...

OBJECTIVE: The management for improving maternal and neonatal outcomes of women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) arriving at the delivery ward with pre-labor rupture of membranes (PROM) has not been elucidated.
