Mesenteric cysts and cystic lymphangioma are rare intraabdominal lesions. In our clinic, during one year, two young women with these intraabdominal cysts underwent operation because of unspecific abdominal pain. Despite preoperative imaging the final diagnosis of a cystic lymphangioma and a mesenteric chylous cyst was made not before surgery. The postoperative course was uneventful. Problems of diagnostic, differential diagnosis and therapy are presented and differences in etiology, histology and location are discussed...

Lymphoplasmacytic-lymphoplasmacytoid lymphoma (LPL)/Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia (WM) or immunocytoma (IMC) consists of diffuse proliferation of small mature B lymphocytes, plasmacytoid lymphocytes, and plasma-cells. The nosographic definition includes the lack of histological, immunophenotypic, cytogenetic, and molecular markers considered specific of other types of lymphoma. The cells show surface Ig (usually IgM), B-cell-associated antigens and display the CD5-, CD23- and CD10- phenotype, which allows for differential diagnosis from B-CLL and mantle cell lymphoma...

Owing to the increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus and the various aspects of this disease, we present a practical approach which allows the clinician to more easily differentiate type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and secondary diabetes of pancreatic origin, i.e. the most common forms of diabetes mellitus. Such an approach uses simple diagnostic criteria, based upon both clinical characteristics (family history, personal history, clinical presentation) and biological markers (C-peptide, autoantibodies,...

Whilst carrying out a pilot study with a structured questionnaire examining the difference in insight between a group of patients with Alzheimer's Disease and a second group with Vascular Dementia of the Binswanger Type, the incidental observation was made that the group of patients with Vascular Dementia of the Binswanger Type demonstrated more obsessional behaviour than the group of patients with Alzheimer's Disease. The obsessional behaviour differed from classical obsessive compulsive disorder insofar as the subjects were unaware of it whilst at the same time resisting change...

BACKGROUND: The plasmacytoid variant is a rare and controversial subtype of myoepithelioma that lacks myogenic differentation and the cytologic findings of which have not been reported previously. CASE: A 46-year-old man presented with a painless tumor located in the soft palate. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) showed odd-shaped cellular aggregates and single cells with round nuclei and finely granular cytoplasm resembling plasma cells together with strands of metachromatic stroma...

BACKGROUND/AIM: The role of alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency in the development of cirrhosis and carcinoma of the liver can be investigated from the analysis of archival biopsy specimens. Immunohistochemistry can visualize the storage of defective protease inhibitor (Pi) variant Z, but does not allow differentation between homozygous and heterozygous patients. The aim of the study was to establish a method for the detection of the PiZ mutation on the gene level. METHODS: Liver biopsy and autopsy samples in which AAT deficiency was detected immunohistochemically by a monoclonal PiZ-antibody were analyzed by single-strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) to reliably determine hetero- and homozygote carrier state in the absence of blood samples and to confirm the histological diagnosis...

Over the past five decades, MR spectroscopy has evolved from an analytical chemistry tool to a noninvasive clinical examination on FDA approved equipment with an AMA billing code. While proton MR spectroscopy has dominated current clinical studies, interest in other nucleii has arisen, particularly P-31 for the evaluation of membrane lipids, and C-13 for the evaluation of glutamate neurotransmission and excitotoxicity. Currently, the most common neuroradiological diagnostic indication is the differentation of suspected cerebral neoplasms for post-treatment effects, abcesses, subacute infarcts, demyelinating disease, and other non-neoplastic processes...

Between 1981 and 1995, 591 patients with primary lung cancer underwent operations. Of these, 19 patients (3.2%) was diagnosed as a large cell carcinoma pathologically. Clinicopathologically, we analyzed a discrepancy between pre- and post-operative diagnosis of these patients. This study showed as follows: 1) Accuracy of preoperative diagnosis was 73.7%; 2) No patients with primary site in right upper lobe had a correct diagnosis; 3) Accuracy of preoperation was not depending on tumor size; 4) In retrospective findings of the biopsied specimens, 'incomplete glandular differentation' caused preoperative diagnosis to adenocarcinoma, and modification of the specimens by pneumonia caused it to squamous cell carcinoma; 5) Inadequatespecimens originated from the right upper lobe or pneumonia lobe; 6) The five-survival rate was 27...

The differental diagnosis of aural polyps includes both benign and malignant processes, including carcinoma. We present the case of a polyp arising after trauma to the ear. The entire external auditory meatus was occluded, causing a maximal conductive hearing loss on the affected side. This did not appear to be a typical aural polyp and carcinoma was suspected. Biopsy revealed the mass to be a leiomyoma of the external auditory canal. This benign tumor was treated by complete excision. The clinical and pathological findings of this extremely rare tumor of the external auditory canal are described...

In this work we present echographic findings in two patients with active and severe intestinal inflammatory disease. Ultrasound scanning results were confirmed by colonoscoy and histological test. Distinction between ulcerative colitis and colonic Crohn's disease is possible because of different echographic pattern...

If it is accepted that 68 p. 100 of patients consulting for maxillofacial malformations do so for cosmetic reasons then the facial deformity must be taken into account in a similar manner to the maxillodental dysmorphism. A morphological cosmetic diagnosis must therefore be combined with a skeletal functional diagnosis. Just as teleradiographic techniques (Tweed-Sassouni-Delaire) contribute to the differention of the various types of vertical dysmorphism, photographic analysis procedures (Fomon-Broadbent and Mathews-Baud) are necessary for the study of anterior vertical abnormalities...

Eighty-six patients with focal liver disease underwent sonography-guided percutaneous fine needle biopsy for definitive diagnosis. Twenty-five out of twenty-six neoplastic liver tumors were correctly recognized as malignant. A sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 98% (25 true positives, 60 true negatives, 1 false negative) was obtained. The high accuracy rate of this diagnostic procedure is explained by the precision of sonographic guidance and the copious excision of tissue material. In 57% of the malignant tumors, small tissue cylinders were obtained besides cytological material, which allowed a definitive tumor diagnosis in 11 out of 15 cases by histologic examination...

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is etiologically closely connected to the Epstein Barr virus. NPC is the only carcinoma in man that can be diagnosed serologically. In the serum of patients with NPC characteristic antibody titres of certain viral antigens can be demonstrated during the disease. Conclusions regarding the success of treatment and on possible relapse can be deduced from these antibody titres. Criteria of histological differention for NPC prognosis are described, and the possible mode of infection is discussed...

First introduced into clinical use in 1981 as an investigative modality, this technique offers a wealth of information about the topography and physicochemical composition of the soft tissues in the orbit and central nervous system. However, to date, some of this information is still not incompletely understood. This method can be used to augment the usual diagnosis methods in selected cases of intraocular tumor. It is possible to differente between Coats disease and non-calcified retinoblastoma, and the paramagnetic properties of melanin allow the melanin content of choroidal tumors to be estimated...

Although according to a few publications in connection with acute appendicitis there are characteristic sonographic signs, the authors didn't find any typical structures at patients having non-complicated appendicitis. But at perforated appendicitis and periappendicular abscesses the fluid collection was frequently very well visualizable and the periappendicular infiltration was detectable as well...

There is not agreement on borderline disorders. The authors support the view that borderline disorders are related to other classified mental disorders, i.e. that they are their abortive forms. There is a continuous transition between abortive and non-abortive forms of those classified mental disorders which are the basis of non-specific manifestations of borderline mental disorders. The authors feel that is of practical importance to differente a small circle of abortive forms which resemble various non-psychotic disorders where an axial disposition is assumed but where, contrary to recognized abortive forms (e...
