OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, and feasibility of a rapid real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for group B streptococcus (GBS) completed during labour, compared with the standard culture test performed at 35 to 37 weeks' gestation. METHODS: Women presenting to the maternity unit for term vaginal delivery had two vaginal/rectal samples collected. One swab was tested using a rapid PCR method (IDI-Strep B, Infectio Diagnostic [IDI] Inc...

The aim of the present study was to determine the diagnostic value of a single-locus real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) recently proposed for rapid detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) from clinical samples (IDI-MRSA; Infectio Diagnostic, Sainte-Foy, Québec, Canada). This test, which was developed on the basis of studies of the sequence analysis of the mecA gene carried by staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), was used to screen nasal swabs of 320 intensive care unit (ICU) patients at admission...

During the last STDs'epidemic in Russia (1994 - 2004) over 2.7 min people have been infected with syphilis. At present the structure of syphilis morbidity is characterized by 37% of latent forms, including 1.5% late latency. The increased level of late latency may result from: an ever-growing number of those with asymptomatic syphilis; disorderly and self-dependent usage of antibacterial preparations; spread of the virus chronic infections (herpes, hepatitis B, C) altering the macroorganism immune response; alcohol and drug abuse which decreases the efficacy of specific therapy...

The IDI-MRSA assay (Infectio Diagnostic, Inc., Sainte-Foy, Quebec, Canada) with the Smart Cycler II rapid DNA amplification system (Cepheid, Sunnyvale, CA) appears to be sensitive and specific for the rapid detection of nasal colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). We assessed the sensitivity and specificity of this assay under conditions in which both the nose and cutaneous groin specimens were analyzed together and compared the accuracy of this PCR approach to that when these specimens were tested separately and by culture assays in an inpatient population with known high rates (12 to 15%) of MRSA colonization...

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively explore the diagnosis and treatment of postoperative lumbar intervertebral disc infection. METHODS: Twelve patients who suffered from postoperative lumbar intervertebral disc infection between April 1995 and September 2004 were confirmed doubtlessly by the diagnosis. They were treated with early immobilization combined with early and sufficient antibiotics and adequate corticosteroid. Patients with severe symptoms were managed by percutaneous puncture and washing discectomy such as rising temperature and perivertebral muscle spasm besides nostalgia, and early debridement of all necrotic tissue was done...

BACKGROUND: Data about anti-malarial drugs prescription practices in Europe and the safety of imported malaria treatments are scanty. In 1999, a French consensus development conference published guidelines for the prevention and treatment of imported P. falciparum malaria. The impact of these guidelines has not been evaluated. AIM: To investigate the impact of these guidelines on the prescription of anti-malarials, and to evaluate the incidence of acute drug events (ADEs) leading to discontinuation of treatment...

Six methods of extracting Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA from sputum for testing by quantitative PCR were compared: Tris-EDTA (TE) buffer, PrepMan Ultra, 2% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-10% Triton X with and without sonication, Infectio Diagnostics, Inc. (IDI) lysing tubes, and QIAGEN QIAamp DNA mini kit; all included a 15-min boiling step. Pooled digested and decontaminated sputum was spiked with M. tuberculosis ATCC 27294. Each extraction method was repeated eight times. Quantitative PCR was performed on the Smart Cycler and Rotor-Gene 3000 using primers targeting an 83-bp fragment of IS6110...

Screening for colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a key aspect of infection control to limit the nosocomial spread of this organism. Current methods for the detection of MRSA in clinical microbiology laboratories, including molecularly based techniques, require a culture step and the isolation of pure colonies that result in a minimum of 20 to 24 h until a result is known. We describe a qualitative in vitro diagnostic test for the rapid detection of MRSA directly from nasal swab specimens (IDI-MRSA; Infectio Diagnostic, Inc...

Dengue fever (DF) is a mosquito-transmitted acute disease caused by any of four dengue flavivirus serotypes (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4) which is becoming a major public health problem in intertropical areas.1 DF is increasingly observed in febrile travelers returning from tropical areas,2 especially those returning from the Caribbean islands and Southeast Asia, but it is rarely diagnosed in travelers returning from Africa.3-8 Diagnosis is often serologic, and in most cases is not confirmed; virus isolation remains exceptional...

In the results, three kinds of trematodes of family Heterophyidae (Ohdner, 1914) were obtained from small intesine of domestic cats and identified as follows: five adult worms of Heterophyopsis continua (Onji et Nishio, 1916) from three hosts, two hundreds and twenty three adult worms of Pygidiopsis summa Onji et Nishio, 1916 from seven hosts and twenty six adult worms of Heterophyes heterophyes nocens (Onji et Nishio, 1916) from three hosts...

Imported dengue is increasingly observed in non endemic countries. We report a retrospective study of 44 cases of dengue fever diagnosed in nine french university hospitals between 1994 and 1997. The patients were aged between 13 and 67 years. Most of them were tourists and had been traveling for a few weeks, in French West Indies and French Guyana (18), South-East Asia (10), India (7) or Polynesia (4). Only, two contracted the disease in Africa. The onset of symptoms preceded the return or followed it within 7 days...

Double diffusion tests in gel were employed for studies of reactions between infectious mononucleosis sera and extracts of bovine, sheep and equine erythrocyte stromata. The extracts were obtained by ultrasonication of stromata prepared from trypsin-digested erythrocytes. The reaction with bovine stroma extract was composed, in many instances, of two lines. A single line was observed in reactions with sheep and equine stroma extracts. This line merged into a reaction of partial or complete identy with one of the lines formed with bovine stroma extract...

Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTV), a small infectios RNA, has been completely digested with RNase T1 and RNase A, and the resulting oligonucleotides have been sequenced using 5'-terminal 32p-labelling with gamma-32p ATP and T4 polynucleotide kinase, fingerprinting and controlled nuclease P1 digestion. Modified nucleotides have not been detected in 5'-positions of these oligonucleotides. PSTV consists of about 359 nucleotides and contains a remarkable stretch of 18 purines, mainly adenosines; there is no AUG initiation triplet present...

The development of the epidemiology of tuberculosis in GDR from 1949 is evaluated. The factors deeply influencing incidence and prevalence of tuberculosis in GDR are: the socioeconomic development of a socialist society with continuous increase of living standard and social fonds, the state of the socialist public health system in general, and the special services and methods for the control of tuberculosis in the chest clinics and hospitals. Tuberculosis is no more a common disease in GDR. Tubercle bacilli are more ubiquitous, but are confined to distinct sources...
