The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of melatonin on selected biomarkers of innate and humoral immune response as well as the antioxidant/oxidant status (superoxide dismutase-SOD and reduced glutathione levels (GSH) to understand whether age-related changes would influence the development of acute Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) infection. Young- (5 weeks) and middle-aged (18 months) Wistar rats were orally treated with melatonin (gavage) (05 mg/kg/day), 9 days after infection. A significant increase in both SOD activity and GSH levels was found in plasma from all middle-aged melatonin-treated animals...

In the present study, the antinociceptive profile of oligopeptidases B from Trypanosoma cruzi (OPTc) and Trypanosoma brucei (OPTb) were examined in mice evaluated by the acetic acid-induced writhing test. Both OPTc and OPTb injected intraperitoneally attenuated the writhing numbers in the acetic acid-induced writhing test. This effect was not dependent on the enzymatic activity, but the enzyme structure was important for this purpose. Intraperitoneal pretreatment with methysergide (5-HT serotonergic receptor antagonist) attenuated antinociceptive effect induced by both OPTc and OPTb in the writhing test...

Although the pathophysiology of Chagas disease is not completely understood, it is widely accepted that involvement of the immune response is critical in determining the outcome of the disease. In this context, CD4⁺ T cells may play an important role in generating different mechanisms of protection. In addition to effector and regulatory functions, CD4⁺ T cells may be also involved with lytic activities against the parasite and may have a relevant role on control of the infection. In this study, we have evaluated CD4⁺ T cells expressing cytotoxic and apoptosis markers in response to Trypanossoma cruzi infection in indeterminate (IND) and cardiac (CARD) patients with Chagas disease and non-infected individuals (NI)...

Chagas disease (CD), caused by the protozoan Trypanossoma cruzi, affects approximately 18 million individuals in the Americas, 5 million of which live in Brazil. Most chronic sufferers have either the indeterminate form of the disease, without organic compromise, or the cardiac or digestive forms. Despite the importance of this disease, there is no information on the effect of nutrition on CD evolution. We evaluated the clinical-nutritional profile of individuals with CD treated at the Tropical Diseases Nutrition Out-Patient Clinic of the Botucatu School of Medicine, UNESP...

In addition to sitosterol, syringaldehyde, 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid, isoelemicin and grandisin, two new tetrahydrofuran lignans were isolated from Piper solmsianun and characterized as rel-(7R,8R,7'R,8'R)-3',4'-methylenedioxy-3,4,5,5'-tetramethoxy-7,7'-epoxylignan and rel-(7R,8R,7'R,8'R)-3,4,3',4'-dimethylenedioxy-5,5'-dimethoxy-7,7'-epoxylignan on the basis of spectroscopic data, including 2D NMR spectrometric techniques. Their in vitro activity were determined against the trypomastigote form of Trypanossoma cruzi...
