PURPOSE: Several fixation techniques for distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint arthrodesis have been described, with good clinical results and complication rates between 10% and 20%. We propose an alternative technique and fixation method using a lateral approach and 1.3-mm plate and screws fixation. METHODS: Between March and September 2005, 11 patients, totaling 15 fingers, had DIP joint arthrodesis by the described technique. The indications were posttraumatic arthritis in 8 fingers, degenerative or rheumatoid arthritis in 5 fingers, and isolated flexor digitorum profundus tendon lesions in 2 fingers...

BACKGROUND: This study tests the patients who underwent to orthognatic surgery to compare the perioperatory treatment and the results with what related by international bibliography. METHODS: We have made a retrospective analysis on 434 patients affected by dentalskeletal malformations and surgically treated at the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery of the University of Rome "La Sapienza", from 1-1-1988 to 31-12-1997. We have examined these data: clinical evaluation of patient, pre and post-surgical orthodontic treatment, minimum age for surgical correction, surgical technique, use of osseus-synthesis with wire or RIF for mobile segment osseus stabilization, use of reference articular plaque and the possible association of additional surgical technique during the same time of maxillomandibular correction...

The study was performed on 101 patients with clinical and MRI diagnosis of TMJ internal derangement with closed lock (permanent or episodic). On the MRI survey the following was evaluated: disk displacement, disk mobility, condylar translation, bone, and muscular fatty atrophy...

Compared with bone fractures caused by trauma, pathologic fractures due to diseased bone are rare events. A pathologic fracture is one that occurs without adequate trauma and is caused by a benign or malignant bone lesion. Diagnosis of the basic disease is important for the subsequent therapy. In cases of benign bone lesions the aim of treatment is total osseus healing with complete restoration of function. In malignant pathologic fractures surgery is an essential part of the overall oncologic treatment design...
