Although immunization with MHC class II-restricted ApoB peptides has been shown to be atheroprotective, the mechanism is unclear. Here, we investigated CD4(+) T cell populations in immunized atherosclerotic mice. Peptides (16-mers) from mouse ApoB, the core protein of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), were screened for binding to I-A(b) by computer prediction and confirmed by radiolabeled peptide competition. Three new peptides, P101 (FGKQGFFPDSVNKALY, 5.5 nM IC50), P102 (TLYALSHAVNSYFDVD, 6.8 nM), and P103 (LYYKEDKTSLSASAAS, 95 nM) were tested in an atherosclerosis model (Apoe(-/-) mice on western diet)...

A woman underwent ascending aortic aneurysm repair, aortic root and valve replacement, and coronary artery bypass grafting. Her postoperative course was complicated by stroke and status epilepticus. With supportive care and antiepileptics, her neurologic status improved. Intravenous heparin and aspirin were initiated. On postoperative day 13, she developed a large retroperitoneal hematoma with femoral neuropathy. Because her hematoma was not amenable to percutaneous drainage or surgical evacuation, and considering her comorbidities, a conservative approach was elected...

We report a case of emergency transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in a 65-year-old patient presenting with decompensated severe aortic stenosis. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was used effectively to obtain measurements of the aortic annulus and for intra-procedural guidance. At baseline, we detected a left atrial appendage thrombus and a localized aortic root dissection after balloon valvuloplasty. The case highlights the important role that TEE may play during TAVR procedures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Atherosclerosis is characterized by a chronic non-resolving inflammation in the arterial wall. Aspirin-triggered lipoxin A4 (ATL) is a potent anti-inflammatory mediator, involved in the resolution of inflammation. However, the therapeutic potential of immune targeting by means of ATL in atherosclerosis has not previously been explored. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of ATL and its receptor Fpr2 on atherosclerosis development and progression in apolipoprotein E (ApoE(-/-) ) deficient mice...

Atherosclerosis attracts increasing global attention because of its morbidity and mortality. G004, as a synthetic sulfonylurea compound, has been confirmed to have anti-hyperglycaemia, anti-platelet and anti-thrombus effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether G004 suppress the onset and development of atherosclerosis and illuminate its probable mechanism of action. ApoE(-/-) mice that were fed a high-fat diet were randomly divided into five groups by weight; subsequently, they were treated with vehicle, G004, at different doses or atorvastatin once daily for 12weeks...

Puerarin, a major isoflavonoid compound from Chinese herb Kudzu roots, has been widely used for the treatment of hypertensive and cardiovascular diseases in China. Here, we investigated puerarin's beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system in angiotensin (Ang) II-induced hypertensive rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with Ang II for 5 days or with puerarin for 10 days followed by Ang II and puerarin for 5 days. Endothelium-dependent relaxation (EDR) to acetylcholine was determined using an organ chamber bath...

Sinus of Valsalva aneurysms are rare cardiac abnormalities that may be congenital or acquired. Patch closure or direct closure of the aneurysm orifice is a frequently performed surgical repair strategy. In this report, we present a rare case of an isolated giant right sinus of Valsalva aneurysm with aortic insufficiency and right coronary artery obstruction. We treated this patient by a valve-sparing aortic root remodelling procedure with partial preservation of the intact Valsalva sinuses and coronary artery bypass grafting with a favourable outcome...

In patients with a small aortic root undergoing aortic valve replacement (AVR), the Freedom SOLO bioprosthesis may be the ideal prosthesis because of its stentless design and supra-annular implantation. This study investigated if the stentless Freedom SOLO has an advantage when compared with a stented bioprosthesis in patients with a small aortic root. From April 2005-July 2014, 269 consecutive patients underwent AVR with either a Freedom SOLO (n = 76) or Mitroflow (n = 193) bioprosthesis size 19mm or 21mm, respectively...

There is evidence that high surgical volume and team consistency improve outcomes. Mortality of 4%-12% for aortic root surgery has been reported in the United States and UK. We aim to assess outcomes of patients undergoing aortic root surgery by a consistent, high-volume team. Data on patients undergoing elective or urgent aortic root replacement (ARR) were collected prospectively. Patients undergoing emergency surgery were excluded. A standardized perioperative approach was maintained and was achieved by delivering training to team members, including surgical trainees, anesthetic, nursing, and perfusion staff, whenever there was a change of team...

The objective of this study is based on the phase of care mortality analysis (POCMA), an effective tool to evaluate the root cause of in-hospital mortality in cardiac surgery patients. POCMA has not been used to compare operative mortalities among transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) populations, and may provide insight that could affect patient safety initiatives and improve outcomes in aortic valve surgery. We included patients who underwent TAVR or isolated SAVR between 2011 and March 31, 2015 and did not survive the index hospitalization...
