PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review recent advancements in staging and imaging of penile cancer, including surveillance after therapy. RECENT FINDINGS: For cN0 patients, the sentinel lymph node biopsy is currently considered the preferred way for invasive staging. It has largely replaced other modalities such as staging inguinal lymphadenectomy. Its diagnostic value increases when combined with other staging modalities such as ultrasound with fine-needle aspiration cytology (US-FNAC) or fluorodeoxyglucose-PET with computed tomography (PET/CT)...

BACKGROUND Synchronous bilateral breast cancer is rare. A case is presented where whole breast irradiation (WBI) was planned after breast conserving surgery in a patient with synchronous bilateral breast cancer. A comparison was made between the feasibility of helical tomotherapy and direct tomotherapy. CASE REPORT A 60-year-old woman was found to have bilateral breast nodules on routine mammographic screening, resulting in bilateral lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy. Histopathology showed a 6 mm diameter invasive ductal carcinoma in the right breast (Grade 1, hormone receptor positive, HER2 negative) and an 8mm diameter tubular carcinoma in the left breast (Grade 1, hormone receptor positive, HER2 negative)...

BACKGROUND: The current recommendation of using transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy (TRUSB) to diagnose prostate cancer misses clinically significant (CS) cancers. More sensitive biopsies (eg, template prostate mapping biopsy [TPMB]) are too resource intensive for routine use, and there is little evidence on multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MPMRI). OBJECTIVE: To identify the most effective and cost-effective way of using these tests to detect CS prostate cancer...

With level 1 evidence now available on the diagnostic accuracy of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) we must now utilise this data in developing an MRI-stratified diagnostic pathway for the early detection of prostate cancer. Areas covered: A literature review was conducted and identified seven randomised control trials (RCT's) assessing the diagnostic accuracy of such a pathway against the previously accepted systematic/random trans-rectal ultrasound guided (TRUS) biopsy pathway. The studies were heterogeneous in their design...

BACKGROUND: Treatment planning especially liver resection in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) depends on the extension of tumor and lymph node metastasis which is included as a key criterion for operability. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers a rapid and powerful tool for the detection of lymph node metastasis (LNM) and in the current manuscript is assessed as a critical tool in the preoperative protocol for liver resection for treatment of CCA. However, the accuracy of MRI to detect LNM from CCA had yet to be comprehensively evaluated...

RATIONALE: Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor of exocrine pancreas. It is typically a well-marginated large solid mass arising in a certain aspect of the pancreas. Diffuse involvement of ACC in the pancreas is very rare, and may simulate pancreatitis in radiological findings. We report 2 cases of ACC presenting as diffuse enlargement of the pancreas due to tumor involvement without formation of a distinct mass. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patients consisted of a 41-year-old man with weight loss and a 77-year-old man who was asymptomatic...

AIM: Needle visibility is crucial for effective and safe ultrasound-guided interventional procedures. Several studies have investigated needle visibility in 2D ultrasound imaging, but less information is available for 3D ultrasound imaging, a modality that has great potential for image guidance interventions. We performed a prospective study, to quantitatively compare the echogenicity of various commercially available needles in 3D ultrasound images used in clinical practice under freehand needle introduction...

A 56-year-old man presented with a chest computed tomography (CT) finding of a right upper lobe nodule, which was diagnosed using brush cytology as adenocarcinoma stage IB (cT2aN0M0). Repeat CT scan for preoperative evaluation revealed a small, slightly hypodense spot in the pancreatic body, which was diagnosed as pancreatic metastasis from lung cancer using endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNAB). Because of the presence of distant metastasis, surgical resection was deferred and chemotherapy was chosen instead...

Increased early detection and personalized therapy for lung cancer have coincided with greater use of minimally invasive sampling techniques such as endobronchial ultrasound-guided biopsy (EBUS), endoscopic ultrasound-guided biopsy (EUS), and navigational biopsy, as well as thin needle core biopsies. As many lung cancer patients have late stage disease and other comorbidities that make open surgical procedures hazardous, the least invasive biopsy technique with the highest potential specimen yield is now the preferred first diagnostic study...

Background and study aims  Tumor seeding after endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is rare. A 53-year-old man underwent transesophageal EUS-FNA for diagnosis of a 6-cm mass in the mediastinum as seen by computed tomography (CT). Four weeks later, repeat CT scan revealed a mass in the esophageal wall. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy confirmed a lesion in the mid-esophagus, which was biopsied and found to be consistent with needle tract seeding after EUS-FNA. Tumor seeding in the gastrointestinal wall or peritoneum after EUS-FNA is rare, but may adversely affect the prognosis...

BACKGROUND: The purpose of these clinical studies was to validate a Tissue Change Monitoring (TCM) algorithm in vivo. TCM is a quantitative tool for the real-time assessment of HIFU dose. TCM provides quantitative analysis of the backscatter pulse echo signals (pre and immediately post HIFU) for each individual ablative site, using ultrasonic tissue characterization as a surrogate for monitoring tissue temperature. Real-time analysis generates an energy difference parameter (ΔE in dB) that is proportional to tissue temperature...
