Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) has shown a significant benefit in preventing ipsilateral stroke when it is compared to conservative management. Surgical morbidity and mortality must be kept to a minimum to achieve this benefit. Neurological status of the CEA patients can be monitored easily during regional anesthesia depending on the awake testing (neurocognitive assessment) method of the CEA patients. In addition, specific parameters can help us to monitor and to predict the neurological status of the CEA patients during the procedures such as regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2 ) and middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAv) changes...

Carotid web is a radiological description of a shelf-like intraluminal filling defect in the carotid bulb. It is histologically defined as atypical fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), with abnormal fibrosis and smooth muscle cell hyperplasia in the tunica intima . The spur-like intraluminal protrusion can serve as a nidus for thrombus formation, which could cause systemic embolism and ischemic strokes. We report a case of a 20-year-old female patient presenting with acute ischemic stroke in the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory...

AIMS: Atherosclerosis is associated with altered circulating microRNA profiles. It is yet unclear whether the expression of these potential biomarkers differs according to the location of atherosclerosis. We assessed whether atherosclerosis of different arterial territories, except the coronary, is associated with specific circulating microRNA profiles. METHODS: A systematic search in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library was carried out using a retrieval strategy including MESH and non-MSH terms...

Ischemic stroke has rarely been reported in association with a web of the carotid artery. We describe here an additional case of ischemic stroke caused by a carotid web in a young healthy woman. Detection of this vascular abnormality required the use of CT angiography and cerebral digital subtraction angiography. Although there is little evidence regarding the optimal management of this condition, under medical treatment with dual antiplatelet therapy our patient remained free of recurrent stroke events. This case report study illustrates that the web of the carotid artery is an uncommon cause of stroke which should always be considered and ruled out, especially in young patients with otherwise cryptogenic stroke...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Increased arterial stiffness is linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Studies have reported conflicting results regarding the relationship between arterial stiffness and time spent in sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA). The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the relationship between objectively measured light PA (LPA), moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA), and SB with the gold standard measurement of arterial stiffness, carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV)...

Background and purpose To develop and validate a risk model (Extracranial Carotid Artery Stenosis score, ECAS score) to predict moderate and severe ECAS. Furthermore, we compared discrimination of the ECAS score and three existing models with regard to both moderate and severe ECAS. Methods The ECAS score was developed based on the Renqiu Stroke Screening Study (RSSS), in which eligible patients were randomly divided into derivation (60%) and validation (40%) cohorts. ECAS was diagnosed by carotid duplex ultrasound according to the published criteria...

Carotid artery web is considered an exceptional cause of recurrent ischemic strokes in the affected arterial territory. The underlying pathology proposed for this entity is an atypical fibromuscular dysplasia. We present the case of a 43-year-old woman with no cardiovascular risk factors who had experienced 2 cryptogenic ischemic strokes in the same arterial territory within an 11-month period. Although all diagnostic tests initially yielded normal results, detailed analysis of the computed tomography angiography images revealed a carotid web; catheter angiography subsequently confirmed the diagnosis...

The incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection has been increasing with over 10 million people affected globally. The role biomarkers play as predictors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among coinfected individuals is not well defined. We aimed to systematically review current evidence describing CVD biomarkers among individuals with HIV/HCV coinfection. We searched EMBASE, CINAHL, Google Scholar, PubMed, and Web of Science from inception to June 2017. MeSH terms and keywords were used to identify studies with information on HIV/HCV coinfection and CVD biomarkers (structural, functional, and serological) such as carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), endothelial markers, C-reactive protein (CRP), homocysteine, and lipids...
