Leriche syndrome, a rare and critical complication of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), affects the distal abdominal aorta (infrarenal) and, similar to PAD, is a result of plaque buildup in the arterial lumen. The Leriche syndrome triad includes claudication in the proximal lower extremity, decreased or absent femoral pulses, and, in some cases, impotence. This article presents a patient with an atypical presentation of foot pain who was subsequently found to have Leriche syndrome. The patient was a 59-year-old female, a former smoker, who presented to the emergency department (ED) with atraumatic, acute right foot pain...

BACKGROUND: Despite the gold-standard approach for transaortic valve implantation (TAVI) remains transfemoral (TF), alternative approaches are needed in patients who present contraindications to transfemoral access. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 79-year-old female with a symptomatic high-gradient severe aortic stenosis-mean gradient of 43 mmHg-and a significant supra-aortic trunk stenosis (left carotid artery: 90-99%; right carotid artery: 50-70%), and who was hospitalized for progressive dyspnoea New York Heart Association (NYHA) stage III...

Warm drylands represent 19% of land surfaces worldwide and host ca. 1,100 tree species. The risk of decline due to climate aridification of this neglected biodiversity has been overlooked despite its ecological and societal importance. To fill this gap, we assessed the risk of decline due to climate aridification of tree species in warm drylands based on spatialized occurrence data and climate models. We considered both species vulnerability and exposure, compared the risk of tree species decline across five bioregions and searched for phylogenetic correlates...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The endovascular approach is the first choice of treatment in high-risk patients suffering from Leriche syndrome. Although many techniques and devices have been developed, there are still difficulties in accessing the true lumen. Herein, we reported a novel technique to increase the support and ease of crossing the lesion. METHOD: We presented a case report of a 45-year-old male patient with Leriche syndrome. The patient refused surgery; therefore, he was scheduled for endovascular treatment...

BACKGROUND: Critical ischemia of the lower limbs refers to the last stages of peripheral arterial disease. It is characterized by resting discomfort or trophic disorders such as ulceration, skin necrosis, or gangrene in the lower limbs. Critical ischemia corresponds to Leriche-Fontaine (LF) stages III-IV and Rutherford stages 4-6. The purpose of this study was to observe the patency and postoperative complications of patients who have had infra-inguinal surgical revascularization and compare the results based on the kind of graft utilized...

In aortoiliac occlusive disease, atherosclerotic plaques can occlude the distal aortic bifurcation and proximal bilateral iliac artery and thus cause ischemia in the lower extremity. This is typically treated by restoring patency with balloon expandable stents. Stents are typically deployed in a "kissing stent" configuration into the bilateral iliac arteries and into the distal aortic bifurcation lumen to restore antegrade arterial flow. However, these stents typically become re-occluded by plaques. To understand the reasons for this and look for solutions, we simulated flow dynamics in the aortic bifurcation in the presence and absence of stents using computational fluid dynamics...

This work presents the results from a set of aerosol- and gas-phase measurements collected during the BIO-MAÏDO field campaign in Réunion between March 8 and April 5, 2019. Several offline and online sampling devices were installed at the Maïdo Observatory (MO), a remote high-altitude site in the Southern Hemisphere, allowing the physical and chemical characterization of atmospheric aerosols and gases. The evaluation of short-lived gas-phase measurements allows us to conclude that air masses sampled during this period contained little or no anthropogenic influence...

Late degeneration is a feared complication of homograft aortic repair. As homograft use is usually associated with graft infection, a second open repair of a complication may be associated to significant mortality. We describe the endovascular exclusion of a degenerated homograft with a contained rupture in a hostile abdomen via a transaxillary approach. The medical history of a 69-year-old male includes prosthetic aorto-biiliac bypass implantation in 2010 due to Leriche syndrome. In 2018, an aorto-duodenal fistula led to a redo bypass surgery using homografts, followed by right femoral amputation...

INTRODUCTION: Aortoiliac occlusive disease (AIOD) is defined as atherosclerotic obstruction of the distal abdominal aorta and iliac arteries. Multiple options exist for management of AIOD including endovascular aortoiliac reconstruction and aortobifemoral bypass. As new technologies are developed, the best approach to manage this condition is evolving. METHODS: We performed a literature review to assess the current state of endovascular aortoiliac reconstruction and aortobifemoral bypass as options for revascularization of aortoiliac occlusive disease...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Leriche syndrome, also known as aortoiliac occlusive disease, is characterized by chronic obstruction of the abdominal aorta and iliac arteries. The disease was first described by Robert Graham in 1814. Leriche syndrome was named after a French surgeon, Rene Leriche, who first operated on the condition. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present a 35-year-old male patient who came to our cardiovascular polyclinic in a wheelchair. He had been complaining for a year about severe back pain, leg cramps on both sides, and weakness in both legs...

OBJECTIVE: Screening for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) remains a challenge in the prevention and care of patients with arteriosclerosis. The Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) is currently the gold standard. However, ABI is time consuming and requires some expertise to perform which is a limiting factor for global screening. The measurement of the Systolic Rise Time (SRT) of the pulse wave of the lower limb may provide an easier alternative to detect PAD. In a retrospective pilot study, we analyzed the possibility of detecting PAD using the SRT of the toe waveform using the Photo-PlethysmoGraphic signal (PPG)...

Background and Aim: Some transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) candidates present with ubiquitary arterial disease with massive calcification burden and stenoses in the whole arterial tree and cannot undergo any transvascular TAVI-approach. Moreover, a history of previous coronary surgery including LIMA-LITA in situ bypass grafting, previous carotid surgery or stenosis/occlusions, a concomitant porcelain aorta, Leriche syndrome, diverse other aortic diseases, arterial occlusions, or a chronic dialysis with arteriovenous shunt are common in such patients with end-stage peripheral artery disease, making even a minimal artery access impossible...

Leriche syndrome usually occurs when atherosclerotic obstructions result in luminal narrowing of the abdominal aorta or iliac arteries and leads to thrombosis; it rarely causes heart or renal failure. We report the case of a 58-year-old Asian man with heart and renal failure as the dominant clinical manifestations of renovascular hypertension caused by Leriche syndrome. We performed an aorto-bifemoral bypass and unilateral renal artery stenting. Post-operative echocardiography showed improved cardiac function, with the left ventricular ejection fraction increasing from 30% before surgery to 54...

Leriche syndrome is a relatively rare atherosclerotic occlusive disease characterized by total occlusion of the abdominal aorta and/or both iliac arteries. The typical clinical manifestations of Leriche syndrome include intermittent claudication, fatigue, and leg pain. We present the case of a 56-year-old man with Leriche syndrome accompanied by an infectious abdominal aortic aneurysm. 18 F-FDG PET angiography/CT and 18 F-FDG PET/CT provided important information about the thrombus and infected sites.

Leriche syndrome is characterized by abdominal aorta and/or bilateral iliac occlusive disease, with a triad of clinical symptoms and signs such as claudication, erectile dysfunction, and decreased distal pulses. Diagnostic imaging is one of the key factors for diagnosis of the anatomic origin of the Leriche symptoms. We report the case of a 56-year-old man with diagnosis of abdominal aorta and bilateral iliac occlusive disease with a wide collateral vascular network.

It is well established that the amplitude of beta oscillations (∼13-30 Hz)-recorded over the sensorimotor cortex-distinctly change throughout movement. Specifically, a movement-related beta decrease (MRBD) occurs before and during movement, and a post-movement beta rebound (PMBR) follows. We investigated how the magnitude of the MRBD and PMBR vary when participants are put in an experimentally induced slow versus fast movement state. Individuals performed a task with blocks that elicited longer reaction times (RTs) and shorter RTs (SLOW and FAST blocks, respectively) while scalp-electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded...
