INTRODUCTION: A case of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia of the thyroid gland is described. RESULTS: The patient, a 32 year-old female with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, presented with a 4 cm nodule of the right lobe of the thyroid gland. The tumour was constituted by squamoid cords infiltrating a dense fibro-jaline stroma rich in eosinophils. The patient is alive and well 14 months after surgery. DISCUSSION: The literature is briefly reviewed and the differential diagnosis is discussed...

We measured the 127I distribution within tyroid tissue to find out where intrathyroid iodine was deposited during iodine treatment in eight Tunisian female patients (aged 33-58 yr) with endemic euthyroid goiter. Before surgery, five patients were treated during 6 months either by Lugol's solution (group 1: three patients) or by Lugol's and L-thyroxine (group 2: two patients). All patients remained euthyroid during the course of the treatment, which supplied 3.8 mg/day iodine. Three other patients did not receive Lugol's solution (control group)...

A case of true mielinic neuroma is described. An exhaustive review of the literature on this subject, basically of the Bolande article is carried out by the authors. The mielinic neuromata are a partial aspect of the complexe neuro-crestopathic syndromes associating the cutaneous lesions to: 1) Medullary tyroid carcinoma, 2) pheocromocytoma and 3) neurofibromatous lesions. The observation related by the authors shows: 1) Ehlers-Danlos disease (not described previously), 2) skeletal abnormalities, 3) medullary tyroid carcinoma and 4) pheochromocytoma symptoms...

Blood drawn from Apollo crew member; to the mission, at recovery, and postmission was used to examine the effect Apollo mission activities have on tyroid hormone levels. At recovery, statistically significant increases in thyroxine and the free thyroxine index were found. Serum cholesterol and triglycerides were decreased. No change of statistical significance was found in the T3 binding percentage, total serum proteins, and albumin. We conclude that apollo activities and environment caused the postmission increase in serum cholesterol may be one result of the increased thyroxine activity...

Nine years after surgical ablation of a trabeculo-vesicular carcinoma of the tyroid, a patient developped bone and liver metastasis. She had clinical signs of thyrotoxicosis, clear increase of blood T3 and sligh increase of T4. The TSH secretion was blocked. Exogenous TSH increased iodine uptake in the thyroid and not in the metastasis. After 2 doses of 120 mCi of 131I, she became hypothyroid, the liver was normal and the scan revealed the disappearance of uptake in thyroid and in metastasis. Such a clinical course was previously found in only 10 cases despite the frequent funcitonal differenciation of the metastasis of thyroid carcinomas...

We have developed a new functional surgical technique for cancers of the larynx specially those situated glottically and subglottically which are considered remedial to a total laryngectomy. Specifically an infravestibular horizontal partial laryngectomy can be performed to remove neoplasms together with the glottis and subglottis. The larynx then may be reconstructed by suturing the bands to the ascended trachea and the conserved upper half of the tyroid cartilage. The results have been encouraging. Swallowing, phonation and respiration by the natural vias has been obtained in 8 of the 12 patients so operated...

A parathyroid adenoma is reported in a girl aged 12 years in whom hypercalcaemia was discovered by chance. Investigation of calcium metabolism suggested the diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism and studies of the urinary cyclic AMP and determination of the plasma parathyroid hormone concentration further added to the evidence. The diagnosis of parathyroid adenoma was made after determination of the parathyroid hormone concentration at various sights during selective catheterization of the tyroid veins. This was confirmed at surgery...

A 45-year-old women had medullary tyroid carcinoma associated with Cushing's syndrome and galactorrhoea. Elevated plasma immunoreactive ACTH and cortisol were partially suppressed by intravenous dexamethasone, appreciably raised by lysine vasopressin, and urinary excretion of 17-oxogenic steroids slightly elevated by metyrapone. A large arterio-venous increase in plasma corticotrophin releasing factor-like activity across the thyroid gland was observed and tumour tissue contained corticotrophin releasing factor-like activity...
