Attention is focused on medical record documentation, disclosure of adverse events, second victim programs, grievance management techniques, alternative dispute resolution concepts, regulatory inquiries including state licensure investigations, product failures, and electronic media strategies...

This study examines and determines the prevalence of obstetric violence (OV) as perceived by midwives, as well as their knowledge of it and the professional factors that could be associated with the perception of OV. A cross-sectional study was conducted of 325 midwives in 2021 in Spain. Almost all (92.6%, 301) the midwives knew the term OV, but 74.8% (214) did not believe OV to be the same as malpractice. Moreover, 56.9% (185) stated they had rarely observed OV, and 26.5% (86) regularly observed OV. Most midwives consider physical aggression to be OV, in comparison, not providing information to women was only considered unacceptable treatment...

INTRODUCTION: Informed consent is the process whereby a patient makes a voluntary decision about their medical and surgical care with knowledge of the benefits and potential risks. Poor informed consent processes may increase potential for medical errors and malpractice. Little is known of the knowledge of surgical informed consent with regard to their surgical treatment in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the knowledge of surgical informed consent and associated factors among patients who underwent obstetric and gynecologic surgery at Jimma Medical Center, Jimma, Ethiopia...

This systematic review aims to determine the rate of out-of-scope practice in medical malpractice lawsuits involving cosmetic surgery or minimally invasive procedures performed by nonplastic surgeons. METHODS: Our systematic review of the Westlaw legal database from 1979 to 2022 included 64 malpractice cases...

Cerebral Palsy (CP) represents the most common neuromuscular disability in childhood and it is caused by a multiplicity of factors. Intrapartum fetal surveillance is still a controversial issue: even though intrapartum hypoxia alone plays a minimal role in causing neonatal cerebral damage, obstetricians face a large number of medical malpractice litigations for alleged birth mismanagement. The cardinal driver of CP litigation is Cardiotocography (CTG): despite its suboptimal performance in reducing the occurrence of intrapartum brain injury, its ex post interpretation is widely used to evaluate the liability of the labor ward personnel in trials and, based on this, most caregivers are convicted...

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord hematomas (UCHs) can cause life-threatening outcomes, although extremely uncommon. They can lead to fetal distress and stillbirth. They have been observed in about 1:5500 pregnancies; they are associated with poor outcome in about the 50% of all cases. UCHs commonly occur due to rupture/lesion of umbilical vein's walls, or less frequently of umbilical arteries' ones. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a fetal demise which acutely and unexpectedly occurred in the last phases of labor...

The Westlaw legal database was queried retrospectively for U.S. state and federal trials regarding robot-assisted surgical procedures from 2006 to 2013 and 2014 to 2021. BACKGROUND: obstetric violence is still far too invisible; the word "violence" generates rejection and obstetric violence is complex to define and typify, as it is a subjective experience. It has been widely analyzed from legal, sociological, and clinical perspectives, but not equally so from the bioethical point of view. This article sets out to take a more in-depth look at the experiences of midwives in order to describe the ethical perspectives of obstetric violence.
