Objectives: This study aimed to assess the effect of surface treatment by bur and laser and application of universal adhesive on repair bond strength of composite resin. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 composite blocks measuring 6×4×4 mm were fabricated of Filtek Z250 composite. All samples were subjected to 5,000 thermal cycles and divided into two groups for surface preparation by bur and by Er,Cr:YSGG laser (n = 60). The surfaces were then etched with orthophosphoric acid, rinsed with water and divided into three groups (silane, silane plus Single Bond and silane plus Single Bond Universal)...

We aimed to investigate the performance of fluorescence-based methods (FBMs), compared to visual inspection after histological validation, in detecting and assessing the activity status of occlusal carious lesions in primary teeth. One examiner evaluated 50 primary molars close to exfoliation in 24 children. Teeth were assessed using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) and pen-type laser fluorescence (LFpen). After exfoliation, histological validation was performed. Teeth were cut and sections were evaluated for lesion depth and activity status (after utilization of a pH indicator) under a stereomicroscope...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the combined effect of mechanical and chemical treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal orthodontic brackets on zirconia restoration. The zirconia specimens were randomly divided into 12 groups (n = 10) according to three factors: AL (Al2O3) and CO (CoJet™) by sandblasting material; SIL (silane), ZPP (Zirconia Prime Plus), and SBU (Single Bond Universal) by primer; and N (not thermocycled) and T (thermocycled). The specimens were evaluated for shear bond strength, and the fractured surfaces were observed using a stereomicroscope...

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the filling quality of a recently developed premixed calcium silicate-based endodontic sealer (Endoseal MTA) with a single gutta-percha (GP) cone technique compared with a resin-based sealer (AH plus) with warm vertical compaction. We also explored the effect of GP cone-mediated ultrasonic activation on the filling quality of Endoseal MTA. METHODS: Thirty human single-rooted maxillary premolars with ribbon-shaped canals were prepared and assigned to 3 experimental groups according to filling method: EMS group was Endoseal MTA + single-cone; EMSU group was Endoseal MTA + single-cone with ultrasonic activation; and the APW group was AH plus + warm vertical compaction...

The procedures described here apply to Xenopus tadpoles from the beginning of feeding through the major changes of metamorphosis and are appropriate for downstream postoperative snap freezing for molecular analysis, fixation for histological analysis, and sterile organ culture. To the uninitiated, the most difficult aspects of tadpole tissue dissections are likely knowing the appearance and location of organs, and the difficulty manipulating and holding tadpoles in place to carry out the oftentimes fine and precise dissections...

Trematode blood flukes of the genus Cardicola are potentially lethal in bluefin tuna cultures. The present study proposed a new method to detect aporocotylid eggs in tuna gills. Aporocotylid eggs were detected by analysing a pair of gill filaments of five transversal areas of the eight holobranches of one hundred Atlantic bluefin tuna and observed with glycerol and a stereomicroscope with an oblique brightfield. Data were gathered according to holobranches, transversal areas and their combination. Eggs were uniformly distributed among the holobranches, but they had the highest prevalence in the second and fifth transversal areas, which is controversial with respect to previous studies of egg distribution...

Introduction: Laser therapy has been suggested as a method for caries-prevention, and ErCr:YSGG laser is increasingly used in dentistry. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of fluoride gel alone and in conjunction with Er,Cr:YSGG laser for remineralization of white spot lesions (WSLs) in primary teeth. Methods: This study was conducted on 20 primary teeth with WSLs extracted for orthodontic reasons. Three sections were made of each tooth at the site of WSLs. Porous oligolactide-hydroxyapatite composite scaffolds were obtained by stereolithographic fabrication. Gentamicin was then coated on the scaffolds afterwards, to achieve antimicrobial delivery ability to treat bone infection. The scaffolds examined by stereomicroscope, SEM, and μCT-scan showed a well-ordered pore structure with uniform pore distribution and pore interconnectivity. The physical and mechanical properties of the scaffolds were investigated. It was shown that not only porosity but also scaffold structure played a critical role in governing the strength of scaffolds...

Rhizophora mangle is an abundant plant in mangroves and tannic acid is a polyphenol produced by the secondary metabolism of plants. The aim of the study was to evaluate the embryotoxic and embriostatic effects of the aqueous extract of R. mangle and synthetic tannic acid on eggs and larvae of Aedes aegypti. A. aegypti eggs were exposed in duplicate at concentrations of 250, 500, 750 and 1000 µg/mL of extract and tannic acid for a period of 14 days. Mineral water was used as a negative control. The eggs were observed and counted in a stereomicroscope (1...

BACKGROUND: Trunnionosis at the modular head-neck taper interface in metal-on-polyethylene total hip arthroplasty (MoP THA) has been shown to occur, and represents a potential mode of MoP THA failure. The purpose of the present investigation is to elucidate differences in fretting and corrosion at the head-neck taper interface of prostheses retrieved from bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BH) and MoP THA. METHODS: A retrieval analysis of BH and MoP THA prostheses featuring a single taper design from a single manufacturer and in vivo for a minimum 2 years was performed...
