INTRODUCTION: Gastric inlet patches are often incidental, but can also be a treatable cause of laryngo-esophageal symptoms. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients whose gastric inlet patches were diagnosed following assessment for laryngopharyngeal and swallowing symptoms. Improvement following Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC) was assessed using Minimum Clinically-Important Difference methodology combining voice, throat, and swallowing domains. Correlations between APC response and measures of reflux and mucosal barrier integrity, measured during 24-h pH-impedance manometry, were obtained...

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal coronary reperfusion (no reflow) is common in acute coronary syndrome percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and is associated with poor outcomes. We aimed to develop and externally validate a clinical risk score for angiographic no reflow for use following angiography and before PCI. METHODS: We developed and externally validated a logistic regression model for prediction of no reflow among adult patients undergoing PCI for acute coronary syndrome using data from the Melbourne Interventional Group PCI registry (2005-2020; development cohort) and the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society PCI registry (2006-2020; external validation cohort)...

In this study, we analyzed a relatively large subset of proteins, including 109 kinds of blood-circulating cytokines, and precisely described a cytokine storm in the expression level and the range of fluctuations during hospitalization for COVID-19. Of the proteins analyzed in COVID-19, approximately 70% were detected with Bonferroni-corrected significant differences in comparison with disease severity, clinical outcome, long-term hospitalization, and disease progression and recovery. Specifically, IP-10, sTNF-R1, sTNF-R2, sCD30, sCD163, HGF, SCYB16, IL-16, MIG, SDF-1, and fractalkine were found to be major components of the COVID-19 cytokine storm...

OBJECTIVES: Driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the leading causes of road traffic accidents in India. Individuals with acute injuries often present to emergency hospital services. Carrying out brief interventions in the emergency can prevent further injury and even progression to severe patterns of drinking. However, there are no known studies from India examining the effectiveness of such interventions in emergency settings. Against this background, the objective of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led Brief Focused Intervention (BFI) in comparison with the minimal intervention for patients with mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) reporting to the emergency and casualty services of a tertiary hospital in Bengaluru, South India, who screened positive for alcohol use...

Previous efforts to reconstruct evolutionary history of Palearctic ground squirrels within the genus Spermophilus have primarily relied on a single mitochondrial marker for phylogenetic data. In this study, we present the first phylogeny with comprehensive taxon sampling of Spermophilus via a conventional multilocus approach utilizing five mitochondrial and five nuclear markers. Through application of the multispecies coalescent model, we constructed a species tree revealing four distinct clades that diverged during the Late Miocene...

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) library construction often involves using restriction enzymes to decrease genome complexity, enabling versatile polymorphism detection in plants. However, plant leaves frequently contain impurities, such as polyphenols, necessitating DNA purification before enzymatic reactions. To overcome this problem, we developed a PCR-based method for expeditious NGS library preparation, offering flexibility in number of detected polymorphisms. By substituting a segment of the simple sequence repeat sequence in the MIG-seq primer set (MIG-seq being a PCR method enabling library construction with low-quality DNA) with degenerate oligonucleotides, we introduced variability in detectable polymorphisms across various crops...

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have attracted great attention due to their rich electronic properties and even been considered to have the potential to extend Moore's Law. However, the Schottky barrier between the metal and 2D semiconductor is formed due to the metal-induced gap states (MIGS), which greatly hinder the development of 2D semiconductor transistors in large-scale integrated circuits. Meanwhile, most air-stable 2D semiconductors are nonmagnetic, limiting the possibility of spintronic application...

UNLABELLED: The bacterial chemotaxis system is a well-understood signaling pathway that promotes bacterial success. Chemotaxis systems comprise chemoreceptors and the CheA kinase, linked by CheW or CheV scaffold proteins. Scaffold proteins provide connections between chemoreceptors and CheA and also between chemoreceptors to create macromolecular arrays. Chemotaxis is required for host colonization by many microbes, including the stomach pathogen Helicobacter pylori . This bacterium builds chemoreceptor-CheA contacts with two distinct scaffold proteins, CheW and CheV1...

We present an experimental approach for generating perturbed high-order Ince-Gaussian laser modes by transforming the low and moderate-intensity lobes of high-order Ince-Gaussian (IG) modes into high-intensity lobes and vice versa. This perturbation reshuffles optical energy among the different lobes and generates new, to the best of our knowledge, modulated Ince-Gaussian (MIG) modes. Computer-generated holograms displayed over spatial light modulators were used to modulate the IGMs. Compared to IG modes, MIG modes are generated precisely in a sense that enhances the IG modes and provides a maximum number of highly intense lobes in a particular mode...

Chondroitin, a class of glycosaminoglycan polysaccharides, is found as proteoglycans in the extracellular matrix, plays a crucial role in tissue morphogenesis during development and axonal regeneration. Ingestion of chondroitin prolongs the lifespan of C. elegans. However, the roles of endogenous chondroitin in regulating lifespan and healthspan mostly remain to be investigated. Here, we demonstrate that a gain-of-function mutation in MIG-22, the chondroitin polymerizing factor (ChPF), results in elevated chondroitin levels and a significant extension of both the lifespan and healthspan in C...

Currently, there is no intervention model for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that addresses all levels and factors of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF, WHO). The most researched programs focus on naturalistic, developmental and behavioral approaches to socio-communication. Less attention has been paid to motor and environmental reactivity aspects (behavior/interest restriction and sensory reactivity). The evidence rationale for the Global Integration Method (MIG, "Método de Integração Global"), a model addressing sensorimotor reactivity in addition to socio-communication, is presented...

Headache is a frequent comorbidity in patients with epilepsy. Data are sparse regarding the distribution of headache types in children with epilepsy (CWE). We aimed to assess the prevalence of primary headache types and their influence on health-related quality of life (QoL) in CWE. CWE filled out a validated headache questionnaire to assess migraine (MIG), tension-type headache (TTH), trigeminal-autonomic cephalalgia (TAC), or, if the criteria were not fulfilled, non-classifiable headache (NCH). QoL was measured using both patient and parent versions of a validated questionnaire...
