People in southern Taiwan experienced two major dengue outbreaks in 2014 and 2015. The mortality and clinical features were very different between these 2 years. Dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV-1) caused epidemic outbreak in 2014 and DENV-2 was predominant in 2015. The characteristics of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases in the 2 years was analyzed. We conducted a retrospective chart review to analyze the clinical and laboratory features of 206 adult patients with DHF in southern Taiwan in 2014 and 2015. The mortality rate of DHF cases in 2015 was higher than that of cases in 2014 (38...

Fish hepatobiliary syndrome, characterized by hepatomegaly and fatty liver, has been frequently reported in many cultured fish species and has caused a dramatic economic loss in China. Glucocorticoids are thought to be important non-nutritional factors for hepatomegaly and fatty liver development. In the present study, a dexamethasone-induced zebrafish model of fatty liver and hepatomegaly was established, and the role of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) in the development of hepatomegaly and fatty liver was investigated using developing zebrafish...

A 44-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis (MS) receiving interferon (IFN)-beta-1a treatment was admitted to a local hospital for severe icterus and liver injury. She was transferred to our university hospital because fulminant hepatitis (FH) was suspected. She was diagnosed with acute-type FH based on hepatic coma, severe liver injury and liver failure, and she received plasma exchange and continuous hemodiafiltration therapy. On hospital day 6, she died from liver failure despite intensive care. An autopsy revealed histological findings consistent with FH...

Severe burn injuries initiate a cascade of downstream events, culminating in multiple organ dysfunction, sepsis, and even death. The elderly are in particular vulnerable to such outcomes, due primarily to a scarcity of knowledge on trauma progression at the biomolecular level in this population. Mitochondria, the cellular powerhouses, have been increasingly scrutinized recently for their contribution to trauma outcomes. We hypothesized that elderly have a worse outcome compared to adult patients due to failed recovery of hepatic mitochondria...

The liver has an extraordinary regenerative capacity rapidly triggered upon injury or resection. This response is intrinsically adjusted in its initiation and termination, a property termed the "hepatostat". Several molecules have been involved in liver regeneration, and among them bile acids may play a central role. Intrahepatic levels of bile acids rapidly increase after resection. Through the activation of farnesoid X receptor (FXR), bile acids regulate their hepatic metabolism and also promote hepatocellular proliferation...

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a life-threatening syndrome resulting from massive inflammation and hepatocyte death. Necroptosis, a programmed cell death controlled by receptor-interacting protein kinase (RIP) 1 and RIP3, has been shown to play an important role in regulating inflammation via crosstalk between other intracellular signaling. The inflammasome is a major intracellular multiprotein that induces inflammatory responses by mediating immune cell infiltration, thus potentiating injury. Genipin, a major active compound of the gardenia fruit, exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic properties...

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a worldwide health problem that can lead to liver cirrhosis, liver cell failure and numerous subsequent complications such as hepatocellular carcinoma. Till the near past, pegylated interferon was the standard of care therapy. However, it was associated with suboptimal success rates and many side effects. Thereafter, direct antiviral agents (DAA) appeared and played the key role in management of HCV. One of those recent DAA is ravidasvir. It is a potent NS5A inhibitor that was formerly known as PPI-668...

Liver failure is rarely caused by multiple myeloma (MM). We present an unusual case of MM initially presenting as acute liver injury. A 79-year-old man with new-onset fatigue, decreased appetite, and no history of liver disease was found to have evidence of hepatic decompensation. Liver biopsy demonstrated diffuse plasma cell infiltration, and MM was confirmed with bone marrow biopsy. Chemotherapy was initiated, but the patient decompensated and died due to respiratory failure. MM should be considered on the differential for acute decompensated liver disease...

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus that can cause devastating reproductive failure and respiratory tract lesions, which has led to serious damage to the swine industry worldwide. Our previous studies have indicated that Tongcheng (TC) pigs, a Chinese local breed, have stronger resistance or tolerance to PRRSV infection than Large White (LW) pigs. This study aims to investigate their host transcriptome differences in porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs) at 7 days post challenge...
