As the body's largest organ, the skin harbors a highly diverse microbiota, playing a crucial role in resisting foreign pathogens, nurturing the immune system, and metabolizing natural products. The dysregulation of human skin microbiota is implicated in immune dysregulation and inflammatory responses. This review delineates the microbial alterations and immune dysregulation features in common Inflammatory Skin Diseases (ISDs) such as psoriasis, rosacea, atopic dermatitis(AD), seborrheic dermatitis(SD), diaper dermatitis(DD), and Malassezia folliculitis (MF)...

Folliculitis decalvans and lichen planopilaris phenotypic spectrum has been described as a form of cicatricial alopecia. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical and trichoscopic features and therapeutic management of this condition in a series of patients. A retrospective observational unicentre study was designed including patients with folliculitis decalvans and lichen planopilaris phenotypic spectrum confirmed with biopsy. A total of 31 patients (20 females) were included. The most common presentation was an isolated plaque of alopecia (61...

Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp (DCS) is a rare condition characterized by painful inflammatory nodules and abscesses on the scalp, often leading to sinus tracts and scarring alopecia. We present a case of DCS in a 26-year-old male who experienced significant clinical improvement following a short course of upadacitinib, a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor. The patient received multiple standard treatments such as topical antimicrobials, oral antibiotics, corticosteroids, and intralesional triamcinolone injections, with limited success...

OBJECTIVES: Behçet's syndrome (BS) is a rare disease of unknown etiology, with limited reports especially in pediatric BS. The clinical characteristics and phenotypes of pediatric BS as a highly heterogeneous variable vessel vasculitis were investigated in this study. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to compare clinical variables and descriptive characteristics of BS by age of onset and gender. Cluster analysis was then performed to identify the phenotypes of pediatric BS...

The vast majority of publications in dermatology refer to lightly pigmented skin, with few addressing the peculiarities of black skin. In addition there is no consensus on what it means to be black in different regions of the world. The lack of knowledge on the subject makes it difficult to recognize and manage dermatoses in this type of skin. This article aims to review the literature on intrinsic characteristics, as well as epidemiological and clinical aspects of the cutaneous manifestations of different dermatoses in black skin...

BACKGROUND: Preliminary data support the possible use of ultraviolet-induced fluorescence (UVF) dermoscopy in general dermatology, yet no accuracy analysis has been performed so far. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate diagnostic accuracy of UVF dermoscopy in clinically similar non-neoplastic conditions as compared to polarized light-based dermoscopy. METHODS: Patients with dermatoses potentially showing UV-induced findings were considered; cases were grouped according to clinical patterns and controls were also included...

The ectoparasitic seal louse, Echinophthirius horridus infects harbour ( Phoca vitulina ) and grey seals ( Halichoerus grypus ) in the North and Baltic Sea. The endoparasitic heartworm Acanthocheilonema spirocauda parasitizes the right heart and blood vessels of harbour seals. The complete lifecycle of the heartworm is not entirely understood although the seal louse is assumed to serve as vector for its transmission. Knowledge about the impact of both parasite species on host health are scarce. In this study, necropsy data and archived parasites of harbour and grey seals in German waters were analysed to determine long-term seal louse (SLP) and heartworm prevalence (HWP) from 2014 to 2021...

Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (EPF) is a rare skin disease. The typical skin lesions of classic EPF are localized on the upper limbs' face, trunk, and extensor surfaces. However, when the skin lesions initially appear on the palms and soles, it is not easy to diagnose as EPF. Here, we report a case of a male patient who presented with erythematous plaques, pustules, and crusted erosions on the hands and feet, which were misdiagnosed as eczema ten years ago. Over ten years, the patient experienced recurrent erythematous patches with bumps and itching on the face, trunk, and extremities after improving the hand and foot lesions...

BACKGROUND: Demodex mites can lead to various skin disorders, from non-specific dermatitis to conditions that mimic other diseases, making it challenging to diagnose accurately. Additionally, it has been reported that Demodex mites can cause skin conditions such as perioral dermatitis, pustular folliculitis, pityriasis folliculorum, blepharitis, and rosacea. Due to conflicting studies, there is a debate regarding the link between Demodex mites and acne vulgaris. This study aims to determine the prevalence of Demodex mites on the faces of individuals with acne vulgaris, acne with nonspecific facial dermatitis, and healthy facial skin to clarify the association...

Topical photodynamic therapy is a widely approved therapy for actinic keratoses and low-risk nonmelanoma skin cancers with a rapidly growing range of emerging indications for other cutaneous diseases. This review summarizes the best-available evidence to provide a clinical update for dermatologists on the approved and emerging indications of photodynamic therapy. The body of evidence suggests that photodynamic therapy is superior or noninferior to other available treatment modalities for actinic keratoses, low-risk basal cell carcinomas, Bowen's disease, skin field cancerization, chemoprevention of keratinocyte carcinomas in organ transplant recipients, photoaging, acne vulgaris, and cutaneous infections including verrucae, onychomycosis, and cutaneous leishmaniasis...

CIITA, a member of NOD-like receptor (NLR) family, is the major MHC II trans-activator and mediator of Th1 immunity, but its function and interaction with NLRP3 have been little studied. We found activation of NLRP3 inflammasome, increased expression of CIITA, CBP, pSTAT1, STAT1, MHC II, IFN-γ and IFN-γ-inducible chemokines (CCL1 and CXCL8), and colocalisation of NLRP3 with CIITA in Malassezia folliculitis lesions, Malassezia globosa-infected HaCaT cells and mouse skin. A20 Haploinsufficiency (HA20) is a monogenic autoinflammatory disease associated with an autosomal dominant mutation in the TNFAIP3 gene. It induces a defect in the inactivation of the pro-inflammatory NF-κB pathway. Less than 200 cases have been described worldwide. The clinical picture of the disease is essentially based on the association of recurrent fever and/or biologic inflammatory syndrome, aphtosis, often bipolar, and cutaneous folliculitis. However, the clinical spectrum of HA20 is very broad, including gastrointestinal (mainly colonic ulceration), articular, cutaneous, pericardial and lymph node involvement, as well as frequent association with organ-specific or non-specific autoimmune manifestations and/or autoantibodies, including antinuclear antibodies and anti-dsDNA...

Primary cicatricial alopecia (PCA) is a rare, scarring, hair loss disorder. Due to its low incidence, little is known about endocrine and metabolic comorbidities in patients with PCA. Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between PCA and endocrine and metabolic disorders. This nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional study included patients diagnosed with PCA or non-cicatricial alopecia (NCA) and normal individuals without history of alopecia registered in the Korean National Health Insurance Service database between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2020...

INTRODUCTION: Folliculitis is a painful infection and inflammation of hair follicles, mostly caused by bacterial, fungal or, more rarely, viral infections. Turpentine derivatives have been used traditionally to treat various skin infections and could thus also be effective in treating folliculitis. We carried out an open, prospective, randomized, placebo- and comparator-controlled multicenter trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of an ointment containing pine turpentine oil, larch turpentine, and eucalyptus oil in the treatment of acute folliculitis...
