OBJECTIVE: The aim of this experimental study was primarily to test the effects and reactions of cattle offered salty water as the only source of drinking water. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mineral balance studies were carried out on three bull, continuously fed a ration based on hay, hay cobs, barley, soybean meal and a vitamin/mineral supplement. The salt content of the drinking water varied between the trials (trials I/II/III: 0.10/5.00/10.0 g/l; town water supplemented by different amounts of an additive containing 95...

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis may present a risk factor in achievement of osseointegration because of its impact on bone remodeling properties of skeletal phsiology. The purpose of this study was to evaluate micro-morphological changes in bone around titanium implants exposed to mechanical and electrical-energy in osteoporotic rats. METHODS: Fifteen 12-week old sprague-dowley rats were ovariectomized to develop osteoporosis. After 8 weeks of healing period, two titanium implants were bilaterally placed in the proximal metaphyses of tibia...

A pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model has been developed for acrylamide (AMD) and its oxidative metabolite, glycidamide (GLY), in the rat based on available information. Despite gaps and limitations to the database, model parameters have been estimated to provide a relatively consistent description of the kinetics of acrylamide and glycidamide using a single set of values (with minor adjustments in some cases). Future kinetic and mechanistic studies will need to focus on the collection of key data for refining certain model parameters and for model validation, as well as for conducting studies that elucidate the mechanism of action...

Aspects of the physiology of iron deposition of an iron-precipitating strain of Sphaerotilus were investigated in laboratory culture to characterize the process. Measurement of growth (incorporated L-[3H]alanine) and iron deposition (incorporated 59Fe) demonstrated that Sphaerotilus exhibit a characteristic temporal pattern of iron deposition, which is delayed until the latter portion of the exponential or the onset of the stationary growth phase. The growth rate (mu=0.17 h-1) was apparently independent of the iron concentration in the medium...

We evaluated a new automatic analyzer for ionized calcium (Ca2+), the Orion Model SS-20, based on a flowthrough ion-exchange electrode. Ca2+ was measured in heparinized whole blood and serum. Within-day variation was 1.2%, day-to-day variation1.6%, and analytical recovery 92.4%. Over the phsiological range interference by K+ and Mg2+ was negligible; major changes in ionic strength, induced by changes in N+ concentration, made correction for a sodium error necessary. Within the physiological range, Ca2+ was inversely correlated to variations in pH...
