OBJECTIVE: To determine the usefulness of ultrasound examination in Primary Care (PC) for the detection of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in male patients from 65-75 years old, as well as the consistency between observers on the diagnosis between general practitioners and the reference specialty in this area, Vascular Surgery. To estimate the prevalence of AAA in that population and its association with risk factors. DESIGN: Cross-sectional descriptive study. LOCATION: Healthcare Centres of Coto and Calzada II (Gijón, Spain)...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate how the ultrasound examination in the carpal tunnel diagnosis could contribute to the clinical and neurophysiological evaluation. This was done by evaluating the cross-sectional area (CSA) and its correlation with symptoms and functionality data assessed by the BTQC questionnaire. METHODS: 60 patients were subjected to open CTR for idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome. The median nerve CSA was assessed both pre-operatively and in follow-up at 4 and 12 weeks...

Large herbivores and carnivores (the megafauna) have been in a state of decline and extinction since the Late Pleistocene, both on land and more recently in the oceans. Much has been written on the timing and causes of these declines, but only recently has scientific attention focused on the consequences of these declines for ecosystem function. Here, we review progress in our understanding of how megafauna affect ecosystem physical and trophic structure, species composition, biogeochemistry, and climate, drawing on special features of PNAS and Ecography that have been published as a result of an international workshop on this topic held in Oxford in 2014...

PURPOSE: To describe previously unreported endoresection of a high equatorial choroidal melanoma. METHODS: Surgical case report imaged with wide-angle retinography and angiography, ecography, optical coherence tomography, and a short video of surgical procedure. RESULTS: The authors describe a 9.68-mm thick mushroom-shaped equatorial melanoma, which was successfully treated by endoresection. A wide-field lens and scleral indentation allowed complete tumor removal by the vitrectomy probe...

The aortic thrombosis is not frequent during the neonatal period. The canalization of umbilical artery is the main risk factor. There are several options for the treatment, such as thrombolysis, thrombectomy and the anticoagulation, which are used in terms of the thrombosis localization and the symptoms that are observed. We present the case of a newborn who consulted for weak femoral pulses, coldness and poor perfusion of lower limbs. The aorta restriction was ruled out using the echocardiography; Doppler abdominal ecography showed aortic thrombosis at an underrenal level...

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) represents less than 3% of gastrointestinal malignancies. However, it is the most common mesenchymal tumor of the digestive tract. GIST is characterized by the expression tyrosine kinase CD117, which differentiates it from other mesenchymal tumors such as leiomyomas, leio-miosarcomas, leiomyoblastoma and neurogenic tumors that do not express this protein. 70-80% of the GIST are benign and located mostly in the stomach and small intestine (> 90%).They can also arise from any portion of the digestive tract, mesentery, omentum and retroperitoneum...

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid ophthalmopathy is a complication most commonly associated with Grave's disease. The disease course ranges from mild to severe, with severe cases resulting in major visual impairment. METHODS: A complete ophthalmic examination in a 35-year-old secundigravida to 14 weeks of gestation presented to the hospital for a routine ophthalmological examination with eyelid retraction in the right eye was made. We studied the course of ocular disease through the gestation with orbit ecography and a 3T MRI...

UNLABELLED: The urinary abnormalities are an important health problem. If they are not recognized in due time, they usually lead to the loss of the renal unit function. In many cases, the diagnosis is late and incidental. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of M.I., a 74-year-old male admitted in our surgical unit with diffuse left lumbar pain, low urinary tract symptoms and slow increase in abdomen volume in the past 4 years. Computer tomography scan and ecography showed a large left lumbar cyst like mass with a dilated supernumerary ureter with ectopic ureteral orifice in the prostatic urethra and apparently normal anatomic inferior renal unit...

The incidence of Achilles tendinopathy is very high in young female gymnasts (17.5 %). According to literature, ecography screenings show the tendons thickening, but at the same time it does not reveal a direct link to the clinical picture. The neovessels are involved in the pathophysiological process of Achilles tendinopathy. For this reason, we wanted to verify there between perfusion tendon values and the type of sport activity. We performed a clinical observational study monitoring the oximetry of the Achilles tendon and the epidemiological data of 52 elite female (artistic and rhythmic) gymnasts versus 21 age-matched controls...

We present a case of well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma of the epididymis occurring in a 60-year-old man who came to urologic consult after recurrent episodes of haematospermia. The patient denied pain, fever and trauma in genitals. Local examination revealed indolent swelling at the right testicle and ecography localised a well-circumscribed nodule at the epididymis tail, measuring 2 cm in greater diameter, with associated haemorrhagic hydrocele. A nodulectomy was performed and the patient is alive with no evidence of disease 17 months following surgery...

Compared with flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon injury, the isolated rupture of flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) tendon in a finger is a rare report in the literature. The pathogenesis is still unclear if we consider only tendon rupture without congenital anomalies or other diseases. The diagnosis is clinical, but it can be confirmed by ecography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We report the case of a flexor superficialis (FS) tendon closed rupture of the ring finger of right hand in a 57-year-old patient...

Cloacal exstrophy and Gollop-Wolfgang complex are very rare pathologies and their association has been reported in only one patient. We present a case of a newborn of indeterminate sex with anomalies of the lower limbs, and an anterior abdominal wall defect. External genitalia were not observed, ectrodactyly of lower limbs, omphalocele, lipomeningocele and imperforate anus were detected. During the diagnostic and therapeutic surgery other anomalies were found, such as vesical exstrophy, cecal fistula, uterine duplication, vaginal agenesis, urethral agenesis, ectopic ureters, stenosis of the left ureter, biphid clitoris and patent urachus...

Peritoneal larval cestodiasis (PLC) was incidentally identified in an adult female mixed-breed dog by explorative celiotomy done in response to abnormal blood values found during a routine work-up in preparation for an ovariohysterectomy. Ten days after ovariohysterectomy, treatment with fenbendazole began (50mg/kg, per os, every 12h, for 21 days). Two weeks after the end of treatment, samples of peritoneal fluid were obtained by paracentesis and examined. Motile peritoneal tetrathyridia were still evident...

Retroperitoneal tumors, whether primary or resulting from the metastasis of other tumors, are a real challenge for the surgeon, in terms of their diagnosis and treatment. They are relatively rare, under 0.2% of the total number of tumors. The clinical examination of retroperitoneal tumors is uncharacteristic and misleading, consisting mainly in palpation of the tumor proper and in assessment of pain. The other signs and symptoms often result from the affected neighboring organs. The imaging investigations used in diagnosing retroperitoneal tumors are ecography, intravenous pyelography, computed tomography, MRI, PET/CT...
