Group A rotavirus (RVA) acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a common cause of severe childhood diarrhea. The dominant circulating RVA genotypes in a given region may vary between and within the geographic regions and from year to year. Our cross-sectional study was designed to determine the burden of RVA genotypes among children with AGE admitted to referral Children Hospital at Egypt prior to implementation of the vaccine. Stool samples with clinico-epidemiological data were collected from 92 children ≤ 3 years-old with AGE...

OBJECTIVES: During routine diagnostic laboratory work, the clinical microbiologist observed an increase of Acinetobacter baumannii isolates with three different carbapenem susceptibility patterns: susceptible, intermediate and resistant. Isolates belonging to the same carbapenem susceptibility phenotype exhibited identical susceptibility/resistance patterns to non-β-lactam antibiotics. This prompted us to analyze the mechanisms of carbapenem-resistance and the molecular epidemiology of the isolates...

d-Glucuronyl C5-epimerase (GLCE) is one of key enzymes in heparan sulfate biosynthesis and possesses tumour-suppressor function in breast carcinogenesis. Here, we investigated a potential involvement of GLCE polymorphism(s) in breast cancer development in Siberian women population. Comprehensive analysis of SNP databases revealed GLCE rs3865014 (Val597Ile) missense polymorphism as the main significantly present in human populations. According the TaqMan-based SNP assay, allele distributions for the rs3865014 (A>G) were similar in healthy Siberian women (n=136) and cancer patients (n=129) (A0,73:G0,27) and intermediate between the European and Asian populations, while genotype distributions were different, with the increase of AG rate in breast cancer patients (OR=1...

SCOPE: Phytoestrogens (PE) may improve breast cancer prognosis by modifying tumor prognostic markers, such as cell proliferation marker Ki-67 and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). Epidemiological evidence linking lignans and isoflavones to Ki-67 and HER2 is limited. We examined associations between the major metabolites of lignans and isoflavones - enterolactone (ENL) and genistein (GEN) - respectively, and Ki-67 expression and HER2 in tumor tissue of breast cancer patients...

An association between periodontitis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been reported by experimental animal and epidemiologic studies. This study investigated whether circulating levels of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and a weighted genetic CRP score representing markers of inflammatory burden modify the association between periodontitis and NAFLD. Data came from 2,481 participants of the Study of Health in Pomerania who attended baseline examination that occurred between 1997 and 2001. Periodontitis was defined as the percentage of sites (0%, <30%, ≥30%) with probing pocket depth (PD) ≥4 mm, and NAFLD status was determined using liver ultrasound assessment...

In the U.S. general population, incidence of colorectal cancer appears to be increasing in younger age groups since the mid-1980s. The objective of this report was to better understand the time-varying elements (age, period, and birth cohort effects) in the epidemiology of colorectal cancer among the active component of the U.S. Armed Forces. During 1997-2016, there were 1,108 incident cases of colorectal cancer among service members aged 20-59 years, corresponding to an overall incidence rate of 4.3 per 100,000 person-years (p-yrs)...
