Follicular larva migrans (FLM) is a rare and atypical clinical presentation of hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM). FLM is characterized clinically by follicular, round, small, erythematous papules that are sometimes topped by vesicles or pustules. These lesions are usually located on the abdomen, back, buttocks and thighs and are accompanied by more or less severe pruritus. Some typical and/or short and fragmented tracks may also be visible. FLM is more resistant to anti-helminthic drugs than classical HrCLM: this is likely due to the deep location of larvae in hair follicles...

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common tick-borne disease in Germany. Although the incidence of LB in Germany has been assessed in several studies, those studies either used data from statutory surveillance, which frequently underreport cases, or data from health claims databases, which may overestimate cases due to non-specific LB case definitions. Here, using a more specific case definition, we describe the incidence of medically-attended LB by disease manifestation, age group, and federal state for the period 2015-2019...

BACKGROUND: The evidence on the prevalence of Lyme borreliosis (LB) is limited, but there is a suspicion of overdiagnosis of LB in recent years. We reviewed the LB diagnosis and treatment-related data in Türkiye, based on the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) 2020 and European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Study Group for Lyme Borreliosis (ESGBOR) 2018 guidelines. By detecting the disagreements between these two, we outlined the areas to be improved for future guidelines...

The spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Lyme Group) is the causative agent of Lyme disease, transmitted to humans through tick bites carrying the bacteria. Common symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and the characteristic erythema migrans skin rash. If left untreated, the infection can affect joints, the cardiac system, and the nervous system. Diagnosis relies on symptoms, clinical signs (such as the rash), and potential exposure to infected ticks, with laboratory tests proving valuable when appropriately employed with validated methods...

In prior studies, the skin lesion erythema migrans (EM) was present for a longer time period before diagnosis of concomitant borrelial meningoradiculoneuritis (Bannwarth's syndrome) compared to EM patients without neurologic symptoms. To determine if this observation pertains to other manifestations of Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB), we compared EM characteristics in patients with borrelial meningoradiculoneuritis (n = 122) to those with aseptic meningitis without radicular pain (n = 72 patients), and to patients with EM but without neurologic involvement (n = 12,384)...

Rapid urbanization and associated waste generation have become a mounting ecological concern for wildlife, especially avian communities. Research has primarily focused on investigating the impacts of human activities on marine birds with comparatively less focus on terrestrial species that live in far more anthropized environments and are at significant risk. Our study has explored the abundance and characteristics of anthropogenic litter in 70 nests of four generalist bird species: Bank Myna (Acridotheres ginginianus), Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis), Black Kite (Milvus migrans) and House Crow (Corvus splendens), within the city of Lahore (Pakistan) and its surroundings, by determining and following an urbanization gradient...

PURPOSE: In this study, we report a patient who presented with both chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML) and Susac syndrome (SS). OBSERVATIONS: A 45-year-old male diagnosed with CML in the blast phase sought consultation due to a deterioration in vision in his right eye. He also had hearing loss and severe migraneous headaches. Best corrected visual acuity was light perception and 20/20 in the right and left eyes, respectively. The slit lamp examination and intraocular pressure were within normal ranges for both eyes...

The pollution due to plastic and other anthropogenic particles has steadily increased over the last few decades, presenting a significant threat to the environment and organisms, including avian species. This research aimed to investigate the occurrence of anthropogenic pollutants in the digestive and respiratory systems of four birds of prey: Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo), Black Kite (Milvus migrans), Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), and Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis). The results revealed widespread contamination in all species with microplastics (MPs) and cellulosic anthropogenic fibers (AFs), with an average of 7...

Mitochondrial diseases are complex metabolic disorders caused by genetic mutations and lead to impaired energy production in the mitochondria of cells. The clinical spectrum ranges from severe multiorgan involvement in early childhood to mild monosymptomatic courses in adulthood. The brain, heart, and skeletal muscles are particularly affected due to their high energy demands. Headaches in general and migraine in particular, occur disproportionately more frequently in patients with mitochondrial diseases. In recent years similarities in the pathomechanism of mitochondrial diseases and migraine have been investigated in numerous biochemical, genetic, and therapeutic studies...

Borreliosis (Lyme disease) is a zoonosis, mediated to humans and small mammals through specific vectors (ticks), with increasing global incidence. It is associated with a variety of clinical manifestations and can, if not promptly recognized and left untreated, lead to significant disability. In Europe, the main Borrelia species causing disease in humans are Borrelia burgdorferi s.s. , Borrelia afzelii , Borrelia garinii , and Borrelia spielmanii . The Ixodes ricinus tick is their principal vector. Although Lyme disease is considered endemic in the Balkan region and Turkey, and all three main Lyme pathogens have been detected in ticks collected in these countries, autochthonous Lyme disease remains controversial in Greece...

Erythema migrans (EM) is the initial and the most frequent clinical manifestation of Lyme borreliosis (LB). Herein, we report on the capacity of culture and serology for the demonstration of Borrelia infection in a cohort of 292 patients diagnosed with typical EM at a single medical center. The median duration of EM at diagnosis was 12 days, and the largest diameter was 16 cm; 252 (86.3%) patients presented with solitary EM, whereas 40 (13.7%) had multiple EM. A total of 95/292 (32.5%) patients had positive IgM, and 169 (57...

Even though there are approximately half a million new cases of Lyme disease in the US annually, according to the CDC, it is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, which can result in a chronic, multisystemic condition. Lyme disease is a recognized public health threat and is a designated "notifiable disease". As such, Lyme disease is mandated to be reported by the CDC. Despite this, both acute and chronic Lyme disease (CLD) have been relegated to the category of "contested illnesses", which can lead to medical gaslighting...

Lyme carditis   is a disseminated infection caused by the bite of an  Ixodes  tick with the transfer of  Borrelia burgdorferi . It is characterized by flu-like symptoms, syncope, palpitations, and at times, erythema migrans. It is a rare systemic complication of Lyme disease that occurs when the initial infection is not promptly and completely treated. It is usually seen in patients who spend time outdoors and are thus more likely to get bitten by a tick, though anyone could be affected...
