Testicular torsion in children is not uncommon emergency problem which occur due to twist in the spermatic cord leading to ischemia or infarction to testicle. Hemorrhagic infarction can occur following testicular torsion is globally; however, in extremely rare situation, such infarction can be segmental. Segmental testicular infarction (STI) was reported in an infant due to epididymitis and a newborn with STI in 1 testicle with complete infarction in the contralateral testicle due to birth trauma. To best of our knowledge, our case of STI in a child associated with testicular torsion is the first described in the literature...

Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (US) has become an important supplementary tool in many clinical applications in children. Contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography and intravenous US contrast agents have proved useful in routine clinical practice. Other applications of intracavitary contrast-enhanced US, particularly in children, have not been widely investigated but could serve as a practical and radiation-free problem-solver in several clinical settings. Intracavitary contrast-enhanced US is a real-time imaging modality similar to fluoroscopy with iodinated contrast agent...

In recent years as a result of decreasing prices and the increasing availability of portable systems, ultrasonography (US), which historically has primarily been the domain of radiologists, has become more widely available to non-radiologists as well. This has increased the use of point-of-care paediatric US performed by non-radiologists. With this scoping review, focused on abdominal imaging, we aim to gain an overview of the current practices in the paediatric setting and to assess its impact in daily practice...

This consensus article elaborated by the European Society for Paediatric Radiology task force on gastrointestinal and genitourinary imaging is intended to standardize the imaging approach in newborns with disorders of sex development. These newborns represent a difficult and stressful situation necessitating a multidisciplinary team approach. Imaging plays an important role in the work-up but needs to be optimized and customized to the patient. Ultrasound plays the central role in assessing the genital anatomy...

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the prevalence of homelessness in consecutive patients presenting to a metropolitan hospital ED measured via a prospective housing screen with the prevalence of homelessness determined via retrospective audit of hospital data. Factors that altered the odds of patients being homeless and service outcomes that differed were examined for screened patients. METHODS: All patients presenting to the ED during a 7 day period in 2017 were invited to complete a housing screen...

Very early onset inflammatory bowel disease (VEO-IBD) is defined as disease presenting before the age of 6. These children require a tailored imaging approach because conventional imaging studies can be difficult to perform at such a young age. Unlike inflammatory bowel disease in older children and adults, colonic disease predominates in VEO-IBD, and small-bowel disease is rare. Distinguishing Crohn disease from ulcerative colitis is challenging both clinically and on histology. Radiology offers the greatest utility for detecting small-bowel disease because it helps to distinguish the two main disease entities and guide clinical management...

Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a rare congenital imprinting disorder. The genetic findings in SRS patients are heterogeneous and often sporadic. However, chromosomes 7, 11, and 17 are consistently involved in all individuals who meet the strict diagnostic criteria of SRS. There are many clinical features characteristic of SRS; the most common are low birth weight, short stature, triangular face, clinodactyly, relative macrocephaly, ear anomalies, and skeletal asymmetry.

OBJECTIVES: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy in children is the most common anatomical abnormality associated with obstructive sleep apnoea. Perioperative complications associated with adenotonsillectomy are more common in children with severe obstructive sleep apnoea. An objective preoperative method to determine the size of tonsils is missing. This study assessed the validity of ultrasound as a tool for measuring tonsillar size in children. METHODS: Single-institution prospective study of twenty-six children aged 2-6 years who underwent elective bilateral tonsillectomy...

Ultrasound of the airways is a technique which has been described in a number of recent articles and reviews highlighting the diagnostic possibilities and simple methodology. However, there is a paucity of information focusing specifically on such methods in children where equipment, technique, and challenges are different. This review article gives a general overview of the equipment considerations, scanning protocols, and clinical applications in children.

Despite their limited mental health expertise, police are often first to respond to people experiencing a mental health crisis. Often the person in crisis is then transported to hospital for care, instead of receiving more immediate assessment and treatment in the community. The current study conducted an evaluation of an Australian joint police-mental health mobile response unit that aimed to improve the delivery of a community-based crisis response. Activity data were audited to demonstrate utilization and outcomes for referred people...

In the present study, we examined the views and experiences of patients admitted to an acute psychiatry unit before and after the implementation of a totally smoke-free policy. Forty-six inpatients completed a questionnaire assessing their views before the smoking ban. Another 52 inpatients completed a questionnaire assessing their views and experiences after the smoking ban. Before the totally smoke-free policy, 69.6% smoked, with 67.7% smoking more when admitted to the psychiatry ward. Before the smoking ban, 54...

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess the impact of creating a female-only area within a mixed-gender inpatient psychiatry service, on female patient safety and experience of care. METHOD: The Alfred hospital reconfigured one of its two psychiatry wards to include a female-only area. Documented incidents compromising the safety of women on each ward in the 6 months following the refurbishment were compared. Further, a questionnaire assessing perceived safety and experience of care was administered to female inpatients on both wards, and staff feedback was also obtained...

Radiology plays a key part in the investigation of non-accidental injury. Many normal variants and artefacts can simulate an abnormality associated with non-accidental injury. It is essential that radiologists reporting skeletal surveys in cases of suspected child abuse are aware of these. We present a pictorial essay to aid the reporting radiologist in the differentiation between normal variants or artefacts and true traumatic injury. We show plain film examples of potential pitfalls throughout the body.
