Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) is a multifunctional cytokine that plays an important role in modulating almost all phases of the immune response and may be responsible for the increased valvular fibrosis and calcification in the pathogenesis of rheumatic heart disease (RHD). The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between the IFN-γ +874 T/A polymorphism and the severity of valvular damage in the Turkish population. The IFN-γ genotypes were determined in 152 RHD patients and 151 healthy controls by ARMS-PCR...

Contemporary data on complications and resource utilization after atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation are limited. We evaluated rates and risk factors for procedural complication, rehospitalization, and emergency department visits after AF ablation. We identified all adult patients who underwent isolated AF ablation between 2010 and June 2014 in 2 large integrated health-care delivery systems and evaluated rates of acute inpatient complication, 30-day, and 1-year readmission and emergency evaluation. We used multivariable logistic regression to identify predictors of procedural complications, 30-day readmission, or 30-day emergency department evaluation...

Objectives: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) are increasingly used for managing patients with valvular heart disease to whom surgery presents a high-risk. As these are costly procedures, a systematic review of studies concerned with their economic assessment was undertaken. Methods: The search was performed in PubMed and the Cochrane Library and followed recommended methodological steps. Studies were screened and their data were retrieved and were synthesized using a narrative approach...

Canine myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) resembles the early stages of myxomatous pathology seen in human non-syndromic mitral valve prolapse, a common valvular heart disease in the adult human population. Canine MMVD is seen in older subjects, suggesting age-related epigenetic dysregulation leading to derangements in valvular cell populations and matrix synthesis or degradation. We hypothesized that valvular interstitial cells (VICs) undergo disease-relevant changes in miRNA expression. In primary VIC lines from diseased and control valves, miRNA expression was profiled using RT-qPCR and next generation sequencing...

The CHA2DS2-VASc score may identify patients at higher risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) following ischemic stroke (IS) in patients without known AF. We compared gender-related differences in items from CHA2DS2-VASc score and their relation with AF occurrence after IS. This French cohort study was based on the database covering hospital care from 2009 to 2012 for the entire population. Of 336,291 patients with IS, 240,459 (71.5%) had no AF at baseline. Women were older, more frequently had hypertension, heart failure, and had a higher CHA2DS2-VASc score than men (4...

Pulmonary valvular stenosis is a relatively common disorder, accounting for approximately 10% of all CHDs. Pulmonic valvular disease can get clinically detected at different ages of life. The more severe the obstruction, the earlier detected the valvular abnormality. Surgical pulmonary valvotomy has been available as a treatment since 1956. This article is about a case of pulmonary annular and valvular stenosis in a 1-year-old child, and it also explores surgical operation of this condition. Transannular patches are usually used within the 1st year of age in pulmonary annular and valvular stenosis...

BACKGROUND: Fenfluraminephentermine (FenPhen) has been implicated in accelerated valvular heart disease, characterized by valvular regurgitation and thickening, and resembling the histopathologic lesions found in carcinoid. The study aim was to determine whether cellular proliferation is present in FenPhen-exposed valves, by utilizing an in-vitro model to test whether FenPhen has a direct mitogenic effect on cardiac valvular cells, as compared to serotonin. METHODS: Ex-vivo valves were tested for proliferation in surgically removed FenPhen-exposed valves (n = 10) and compared to proliferation levels in normal human cardiac valves removed at autopsy (n = 10)...
