Toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) is a rapid-onset inflammation of the eye following uneventful ocular surgery. We report a case of TASS following Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI) surgery. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) identified barium in the eye and in the eluate from the bleb of the BGI. We attribute TASS in our patient to the dissolution of barium from the BGI and its entry into the eye, where it causes severe inflammation.

Nutrient sensing plays important roles in promoting satiety and maintaining good homeostatic control. Taste receptors (TAS) are located through the gastrointestinal tract, and recent studies have shown they have a relationship with metabolic disorders. The aim of this study was to analyze the jejunal expression of TAS1R2, TAS1R3, TAS2R14 and TAS2R38 in women with morbid obesity, first classified according to metabolic syndrome presence (MetS; n = 24) or absence (non-MetS; n = 45) and then classified according to hepatic histology as normal liver ( n = 28) or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease ( n = 41)...

Infectious endophthalmitis is the most devastating complication of eye surgery and is associated with severe inflammation of ocular tissues. This study aimed to present a similar condition, a case of toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) after an uncomplicated vitrectomy. A 69-year-old woman presented with epiretinal membrane and underwent 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy with membrane peeling in her left eye. Thirty hours after the procedure, the patient complained of increasing loss of visual acuity and a red left eye...

PURPOSE: To report a cluster of cases of toxic anterior-segment syndrome (TASS) in eyes implanted with a specific foldable acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) model. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: The medical records were reviewed for 7 eyes of 4 patients diagnosed with TASS after cataract surgery at Shimane University and Matsue Red Cross Hospital between July and November 2020. RESULTS: Among the 162 eyes implanted with the Lentis Comfort/LS-313 MF15 IOL, acute anterior chamber (AC) inflammation with fibrin formation developed 1-15 days after uneventful surgeries in 7 (4...

Improved surgical techniques have led to an increase in the number of outpatient ophthalmic procedures. In spite of decreased surgical times and overall improved outcomes, endophthalmitis remains one of the most severe complications of ophthalmic surgery. Although there are well known risk factors for postoperative endophthalmitis, some prophylaxis strategies remain controversial. A category of noninfectious postoperative inflammation, known as toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS), is a rare but important complication of cataract surgery...

Background: Phakic Intraocular Lens (P-IOL) implantation is a safe, easy, predictable intervention designed to manage moderate to high refractive errors. Complications are relatively uncommon and include mainly cataract and intraocular pressure spikes. Toxic Anterior Segment Syndrome (TASS) is a rather unusual sterile anterior segment inflammation after uneventful intraocular surgery, extremely rarely reported after P-IOL implantation. Urrets-Zavalia Syndrome (UZS) is also very rarely described after P-IOL...

Studies have shown that executive function abilities are related and have predictive power over adaptive behaviour in both typical and atypical populations. This study examined the relationship between executive functioning and adaptive behaviour in adolescents with Down syndrome, as it has not been studied before in this population. We propose and test a model of how each core EF (i.e., working memory, inhibition, and flexibility) contributes to each domain of AB (i.e., conceptual, social, and practical). We found that parent reported Conceptual skills were related to working memory, while teacher reported Conceptual and Practical skills were related to inhibition and flexibility...

These sets of abilities are considered as separate but related domains with small to moderate correlations. Fifty-three adolescents with DS were assessed regarding their intellectual functioning whereas adaptive behavior was reported by parents and teachers...
